The carbon footprint of your trip

At Grand Angle, we are committed to making travel more responsible. That is why we have developed a tool to calculate the carbon footprint of our trips.

This carbon footprint represents the greenhouse gas emissions generated during your trip, expressed in kg of CO2 equivalent per person (kg CO2e).

Explore our vision of sustainable tourism and discover how we take a different approach to travel, with respect and conviction.

What is included?

We calculate emissions across four main categories:

CategoryExamples
AccommodationNights in hotels, guesthouses or mountain huts, based on their energy consumption
MealsFood eaten during the trip, taking typical diets into account
Local transportOrganised transfers and journeys (minibuses, shuttles, trains, etc.)
Luggage transportTransfers of your luggage between stages

For island or distant destinations, emissions from return flights are also included.

How do we calculate these emissions?

  • Specialist databases: KlimaLink (accommodation), Greentripper, ADEME, Climatiq
  • Exact distances: calculated using mapping tools
  • Local information: vehicle type, fuel, occupancy rate, etc.

We combine these estimates in one calculation and present the result per person in kg CO2e. The result is an estimate: it depends on the information available for each trip and on the assumptions used for transport, meals and accommodation.

Why calculate this?

By providing information about the carbon impact of your trip, we help you to:

  • Understand your emissions
  • Compare different types of trips
  • Make more responsible travel choices

What about travelling to the starting point?

As each traveller makes their own transport arrangements to reach the starting point, we do not count these emissions. The exception is trips requiring a flight (for example, to islands or outside Europe): in these cases, flight emissions are included.

To estimate the carbon footprint of your journey, you can use ADEME’s calculator.

A clear and honest approach

We aim to explain what our estimates include and which journeys are outside their scope. We avoid describing a trip as carbon neutral or using an environmental label without evidence.

Putting it in the context of everyday life

Comparing trip estimates is useful only when they cover the same activities and use the same calculation method. The journey to the starting point can materially change the total footprint, so consider it alongside the estimate shown for the trip. Train travel or car sharing may reduce that part of your journey, depending on your route and circumstances.
