Why cycle in Belgium?

Belgium is an inviting destination for a first cycling holiday. The largely flat routes in Flanders connect quiet countryside with cities known for their canals, medieval buildings and lively squares. Bruges and Ghent are rewarding stops, with time to explore on foot after the day’s ride.

Belgium also fits naturally into a longer journey through the Low Countries. A route between Amsterdam and Bruges brings together Dutch waterways and Flemish cities. Explore our cycling tours in the Netherlands if you would like to extend your trip.

Belgium by bike and boat

On a bike and boat holiday, your boat travels with you while you cycle each day. You unpack once and return to your floating accommodation in the evening. It is a comfortable way to combine time outdoors with visits to historic towns.

Our Amsterdam to Bruges bike and boat tour follows this approach, linking the Netherlands and Belgium in one journey. Check the trip page for the current route, departures and practical details.

When to go

Spring through early autumn is the main season for cycling in Belgium. Spring brings longer days and fresh landscapes; summer gives you more time to linger in the cities. Early autumn can be especially pleasant for riders who prefer cooler conditions. Weather can change quickly near the North Sea, so pack a waterproof layer whatever your departure date.

—  Regret that we didn't have a choice of several route lengths each day, as some of our friends didn't want to cycle too much. Approaching towns to find the boat a little difficult Boat sometimes a little far from city center, but interesting

Hello,

Thank you for your message and your feedback, which helps us improve our services.

For this trip, shorter routes are indeed offered on three out of six days, when the layout of the stages allows for it. I’m sorry to hear that some days seemed a bit long to your friends, but our partner designs the routes based on the existing network of bike paths to ensure the best possible experience. Bike-and-boat trips also offer the advantage of spending a rest day on board the boat if you get tired.

Regarding mooring locations, particularly in Ghent (see our fact sheet), these are subject to strict port regulations applicable to river cruise boats. As a result, the boat may sometimes be a short distance from the city center.

I will forward your comments to our partner so they can explore solutions to make it easier to access the boat at the end of each leg.

Best regards,
The Grand Angle Team

—   A very pleasant and varied route suitable for all ages—even for a 9-year-old girl—despite the wind, which can sometimes be very strong and makes an electric bike a welcome option.

—  well-organized trip despite minor equipment problems
