Why choose to cycle in the autumn?

Autumn is a privileged season for cycle tourism. Beyond the spectacle of shimmering forests and vineyards, the climate is ideal: mild, pleasant temperatures make for comfortable days of riding without the intense heat of summer. It’s also the season of harvests, a time to savor local flavors at village festivals and markets. With fewer tourists on the roads and at popular sites, you can enjoy a more authentic and peaceful experience.

Our best destinations for an autumn bike ride

France: vineyards, canals, and coastline

France in the autumn is a cyclist’s dream. Imagine riding through the vineyards of Burgundy as they turn gold, or following the tranquil towpath of the Garonne Canal from Bordeaux to Toulouse. The cycling in Loire Valley France route offers majestic châteaux framed by fall foliage, while the Atlantic coast provides invigorating sea air on a ride from La Rochelle to Royan. Each itinerary is an invitation to discover the French art de vivre. Explore all our bike tours France.

Italy: gastronomy and rolling hills

Italy in the fall is a feast for the senses. Cycle through the iconic landscapes of Tuscany, from Pisa to Florence, where the hills are covered in vines heavy with grapes. Or explore the culinary heartland of Emilia Romagna on a gastronomic journey from Parma to Bologna. These self-guided tours allow you to fully immerse yourself in the rich culture and world-renowned cuisine of the country. Discover our complete selection of biking tours Italy.

Along the great rivers of Europe

Following Europe’s great rivers by bike is a classic experience, made even more special in the autumn. The famous Passau to Vienna bike tour along the Danube reveals landscapes where the forest blazes with color and vineyards are buzzing with harvest activity. Another iconic route is the tour of Lake Constance, where you can ride peacefully through three countries, enjoying clear alpine views. For more river cycling, see our Danube tours.

Mediterranean warmth in Greece

To extend the summer, head for Greece. The island of Corfu offers pleasant temperatures well into autumn, perfect for exploring its cypress-covered hills, ancient olive groves, and secluded coves by bike. The coastal roads are quieter, allowing you to fully appreciate the turquoise waters and charming villages. Find your next adventure with our Greece bike tours.

How to choose your autumn cycling trip?

What is the best time to go?

September and October are ideal months for most destinations, offering the best balance of pleasant weather and stunning autumn colors. Depending on the region, early November can also be a wonderful time, especially in southern Europe. Each month has its charm, from the beginning of the foliage change in September to the peak of the golden hues in October. Explore all our cycling in autumn trips.

Self-guided freedom, expert support

Our specialty at Grand Angle is the self guided tour Europe. We believe it’s the best way to discover a region at your own pace. We provide you with detailed roadbooks, quality accommodations, and reliable luggage transfers. You pedal with a light mind, focusing only on the pleasure of the journey. This formula combines total freedom with the peace of mind of professional organization.

What to pack for your trip?

Autumn weather can be variable, so layering is key. Opt for breathable fabrics, a waterproof and windproof jacket, and versatile accessories like arm warmers and a neck gaiter. Don’t forget comfortable cycling gloves and good lighting, as the days are shorter. For a comprehensive checklist, consult our bike trip packing list on our blog.

—  The organization was excellent, and we received a very warm welcome at the hotels. The route is beautiful, but it lacks challenge and mountain biking sections.

Armel 8/16/26

—  A truly beautiful route. The Vercors in all its splendor and diversity. The progression in difficulty—both in terms of effort and technique—is perfect, and the accommodations, featuring a pool and excellent dining, are top-notch. The e-MTBs are of very high quality. The only minor suggestion for the app: include an alternative route at the exit from Valchivière, as the pedestrian path leading uphill is a bit tricky—it’s only 200 meters long in total, so it’s a very minor issue.

—  That's wonderful, thank you. Personally, I would have liked to have a choice between different hotel categories, which would also allow travelers to tailor their trip to their preferences and budget.

Thank you for your feedback! We're delighted that you enjoyed your trip. Thank you also for your suggestion: we'll look into offering more accommodation options whenever possible. We look forward to helping you plan your next trip!
