Level 5 trips feature the most demanding itineraries in our selection. They are designed for experienced hikers who are trained to handle successive long days, significant elevation gains and sometimes technical terrain. The details of each itinerary remain the best reference for assessing the actual demands of the trip.

Depending on the trip, a day’s route may involve six to eight hours of walking and more than 1 200 metres of ascent. Some routes follow alpine trails, include off-trail sections or cross steep terrain. These guidelines are no substitute for reading the day-by-day itinerary: altitude, the weight you carry, technical difficulty and the sequence of daily stages matter just as much as distance.
Regular mountain hiking experience, sure-footedness and the ability to pace yourself are essential. If these conditions are new to you, a level 3 or level 4 trip may be a more suitable way to prepare.
In the months before departure, plan long hikes with significant elevation gains, then hike on two consecutive days to assess your recovery. Test the footwear, backpack and clothing you will take with you. Our article on what to pack in your hiking backpack provides a starting point, which you should supplement with the packing list for your trip.
On a guided trip, the guide manages the route and makes decisions on the ground. This does not reduce the physical fitness and technical skills required of participants. If you are unsure, speak to our team and describe your recent hikes, their duration, elevation gains and the terrain you covered.

— An exceptional and unforgettable experience in a breathtaking setting. A significant physical challenge, just as described. A wonderful mix of rustic mountain huts and comfortable inns. Our guide, Johann, did a great job leading the group, setting a good pace and keeping everyone in good spirits every day. Highly recommended!
