Your next level 3 hiking holiday, suited to you

Level 3 provides an intermediate benchmark for travellers who already walk regularly and would like a more demanding holiday. Durations, elevation changes and difficulty vary by activity: always check the detailed trip description before booking.

Understanding level 3 at Grand Angle

A level 3 holiday is intended for active travellers who are accustomed to several hours of physical effort. It may involve walking, cycling or activities on snow. The terrain and benchmarks therefore differ from one trip to another.

For hiking, our general grading system indicates 3 to 5 or 6 hours of walking, with 500 to 1 000 m of ascent and 500 to 1 200 m of descent in a day. Some holidays include longer stages: the trip description remains the reference. Compare this with level 2 and level 4, then consult our What is my level? page if you are unsure.

Self-guided or with a guide

Holidays may be available in two formats:

  • Self-guided trips: you follow the itinerary without a guide, with the services and documents specified in the trip description. Explore our selection of self-guided hiking holidays.
  • Guided trips: a guide leads the group and takes the conditions encountered into account. Browse our guided trips.

Walking or cycling: different benchmarks

The number 3 does not mean exactly the same thing for walking and cycling. Use the duration and route profile given in the itinerary as your guide:

  • For a trek or hiking holiday, look at the walking hours, elevation changes and type of trail.
  • For a cycling trip, look at the length of each stage, the route profile, the surface and the type of bike specified.

Preparing without comparing yourself to others

Consistency matters more than a single strong performance. Before departure, walk or cycle on several consecutive days over terrain similar to that of your holiday. Also test the footwear, backpack or bike you will use.

Then reread each day of the itinerary. If you are unsure which of two levels to choose, contact us with details of your recent outings: we can compare the benchmarks with you.

A level 3 holiday may suit a family already accustomed to active days. Start with the youngest participant’s level and check the recommended age in the trip description. Our family trips offer further points of comparison.

—  Very interesting itineraries that often take you along less-traveled trails. Transportation and hotels were impeccable. A few inconsistencies between the app and the roadbook. The map showing how to get to Portela from Porto da Cruz is missing. Overall, we’re thrilled with this trip!

Thank you very much for your feedback! We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you also for your comments on the roadbook and the app—we'll look into them to improve our materials. We look forward to accompanying you on your next trip!

—  Scenery was out of this world. The ascents were hard but it meant you could stop and take it all in, take your time and appreciate just what you are achieving.

—  This was one of the best trips of my life!! Physically, the hiking was challenging, but doable, which was what my party was looking for. Every minute of the day, the views were SPECTACULAR!!! Literally breathtaking. Our guide took great care of us and we LOVED our 3 course meals every night in the different, fascinating cities. We also met so many fun and friendly people on the Tour. Loved it all❤️

—  Be prepared for some demanding hikes with some long, steep climbs over passes (with some parts on unstable scree and a few places where you have a cabled handrail to assist). I was worried about how I would handle some of the more exposed places but found it less scary than I expected. The reward for all your effort are the stunning views and the satisfaction of reaching lovely refugios for lunches and overnight stays. Celebrating each hike with Aperol and Hugo spritzes was a daily highlight! The organization by Grand Angle was excellent and the app is a fantastic resource and guide. It ended up being fun following the instructions and figuring out the connecting bus rides. One other point - we highly recommend booking luggage transfer but be aware that due to how that works, you are carrying two days worth of gear practically every day of the trip and just topping up from your luggage when you do see it. Get your training in for this one and you will be ready for the succession of hard hikes over 10 days.
