Europe’s 3th-largest country, with just 10 million inhabitants, Sweden and its vast natural landscapes are a paradise for outdoor holidays: Nordic ski touring, snowshoeing, dog sled driving and ice fishing in winter; canoeing, cycling and hiking in summer all offer an invariably rewarding experience of unspoilt nature. Our top 10 most beautiful landscapes in Sweden reveal the scale of it, from the glaciers of Sarek National Park to the limestone pillars on the island of Gotland.
With varied terrain that is not overly steep and high mountain valleys, the country is a haven for Nordic ski touring, also renowned for its long-distance cross-country ski races, such as the Vasaloppet. The Nordic ski expeditions offered by Grand Angle in Sweden are relatively undemanding technically.
This is the highest mountain range in central Sweden, accessible via Östersund. This magnificent glaciated range on the Norwegian border is dominated by the peaks of Helagsfjället (1797m) and Sylarna (1743m). Nordic ski expeditions in Jämtland, following high valleys at elevations between 800m and 1100m, offer spectacular winter scenery.
Beyond the Arctic Circle, Kebnekaise is Sweden’s highest mountain, standing at 2117m. It is part of the vast Scandinavian Mountains. The King’s Trail, or Kungsleden, starting from Kiruna, with views of Kebnekaise, is one of the great classic Nordic ski touring routes… also possible on snowshoes, or on foot in summer.
Even further north lies the vast wilderness of Sarek National Park: for experienced hikers and only on a tailor-made trip!
To the west, towards Luleå, the terrain is gentler: large frozen lakes, boreal forest and tundra make it ideal for discovering dog sledding.
Bordered by the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, Sweden has an incredible, deeply indented coastline. Sea, lakes and land mingle to create unique landscapes, as around the capital, Stockholm, built on 14 islands, at the heart of an archipelago of more than 30 000 islands! Explore on foot or by bike: a historic old town, untouched islands, the shores of the great Lake Mälaren… Don’t forget your swimwear!
On the west coast, EuroVelo 12, the North Sea Cycle Route, follows the entire coastline from Denmark to Norway, passing through the beautiful city of Gothenburg and along the indented shores of the Kattegat, dotted with islands.
In the west, on the Norwegian border, the plains and forests of Värmland are dotted with more than 11000 lakes, including Vänern, the largest lake in Western Europe. Here, some 800km of canoe waterways await you to explore at your own pace, particularly around Glaskogen Nature Reserve.
Imagine yourself there through our travel account illustrated with beautiful photos of the Kungsleden trail

— 250km cycling on a really well-chosen Swedish loop where the landscapes and villages were varied …and with the sun, of course, it's a great trip all on its own!!! the GPX route was really reliable and, from hotel to hotel, incredibly precise! bravo to the circuit engineers! the welcome at the hotels was warm and the rooms welcoming!
