We were looking for a destination for a family break with a baby that would offer a change of scenery and be accessible by train or car, with, of course, the chance to enjoy some lovely hikes. That is how we settled on Belle-Île for a long weekend full of discoveries.
Top 5 things not to miss during a stay on Belle-Île!
1- An essential stop in Auray
Before heading to the island for the next 4 days, we stopped in the must-visit town of Auray. Charming, with its traditional architecture, its little shops invite you to browse and its crêperies tempt you to indulge. We walked from the historic centre, where the station is located, down to the port of Saint-Goustan, which dates back to the 13th century.

After this first stop, which put us in the Breton spirit, we continued to Quiberon, where we took the ferry.

2- The town of Sauzon

After disembarking and dropping off our bags at our accommodation in Le Palais, the island’s main town, we set off on foot. We put little Alexandre in the carrier on our backs and headed towards Sauzon. The sun warmed us while the sea breeze kept us cool. Our baby soon fell asleep, lulled by our footsteps. At this time of year, the island is still quiet. We are among the first tourists of the year to walk the coastal path. We spot plenty of gulls and pelicans. We descend to the beaches, then climb back up to the clifftops, time and again. Eventually, we catch sight of Sauzon and its little fishing harbour. We happily stop for a drink on one of the inviting terraces.

3- The sea stacks of Port-Coton
Every guide to the island mentions them, and with good reason! A second hike, starting at the Pointe des Poulains, took us to these famous sea stacks. The scenery is magnificent. Looking at the landscape, you really appreciate the power of the ocean and its ability to wear away the rock. These needle-like stacks are like a fleeting work of art. Alexandre will barely see them, as he is still asleep in the baby carrier. He has, however, been able to enjoy the sea air all day long.

4- The white sandy beaches
During our stay on the island, we enjoyed numerous beaches and coves. Some we admired only from the clifftops; at others, we stopped for a rest and even a quick swim that April. For example, we lazed on Donnant beach, where some people were learning to surf. At Bordardoué, we were almost alone. Near this beautiful stretch of sand, where we found shade beside a rock, stands the Belle Fontaine, also known as the Aiguade de Vauban. It once supplied ships with fresh water. Today, it is possible to visit the site.

5- The Pointe des Poulains
Another iconic spot on the island is the Pointe des Poulains. At the northern tip, the Pointe des Poulains is overlooked by a lighthouse. This is also where you will find the house of Sarah Bernhardt, the famous actress. We made the most of the setting with a sunset picnic, enjoying local produce we had picked up at a bar in Sauzon.

What a sight!
Belle-Île certainly lived up to our expectations for this family weekend. With the season only just beginning, we were able to enjoy its wild beauty in all its splendour, as the vegetation began to bloom. Between hiking and relaxing, with a new scene around every bend in the path, this brief visit has left me wanting to return to this haven of peace to #walk around the island!
