Exploring the Channel Islands by bike: an account of a trip to Jersey, Guernsey and Sark

Winter hiker among snow-covered trees

Just an hour’s crossing from the Normandy coast, the Channel Islands offer cycle touring enthusiasts a complete change of scenery. With spectacular coastal landscapes, island heritage and British hospitality, this unique destination combines authenticity and variety. Jean-Baptiste set off to explore Jersey, Guernsey and Sark by bike for 8 days. We invite you to discover his account.

Off for 8 days of rest, switching off, exploring and cycling. The itinerary is enticing: the Channel Islands. I spent a day in Jersey when I was 10 years old and have fond memories of it. The idea of spending three days in Jersey and the same in Guernsey, with an excursion to the island of Sark appeals to me and fills me with excitement. I haven’t travelled with Grand Angle before, but I’m familiar with cycling holidays that include luggage transfers.

Jersey by bike

Jersey: the hospitality, particularly at the hotel, the hotel’s comfort and the landscapes along the way more than make up for the late delivery of the bike on the first morning. Grand Angle and the ferry company warn me of bad weather that could disrupt some sailings. So far, I’ve been rather lucky. I set off expecting nothing but rain, but I’ve barely had any, perhaps an hour out of the 12 hours spent cycling.

The lush inland valleys, vast sandy beaches such as Saint-Ouen, and spectacular cliffs along the north coast offer breathtaking views. The Green Lanes, quiet lanes where cyclists have priority, allow me to explore the island with peace of mind and enjoy Jersey’s British charm at my own pace.

Guernsey by bike

Guernsey: the journey took a long time. Originally scheduled for early morning, the departure was pushed back to 15:00, and the boat finally left at 16:30. I explore Guernsey without using the routes suggested in the app. I set out to cycle around the island and manage it in a day. It’s a chance to see the industrial area (a little nod to Bordeaux), which isn’t very interesting but serves as a good warm-up before the north coast (Cobo Bay, etc.), then the south, where I’d originally intended to go.

The hotel only has two stars, but it’s very good. In the morning, I ask a woman at the tourist office what I can do in one day with a bike, and she produces a list that would deserve 4 days! This anecdote shows just how much Guernsey has to offer: an island where Victor Hugo spent fifteen years in exile, with an elegant atmosphere, beautifully tended gardens and varied cycling routes.

I discover remarkable coastal landscapes, secluded coves and fascinating historical heritage. Guernsey feels more intimate than Jersey, with an authentic charm that invites you to take your time exploring its hidden treasures.

Sark: the island where time stands still

Exploring the Channel Islands

Sark: the weather forecast suggests it will be possible to enjoy the island in the morning, before the rain expected in the afternoon. The scenery is magnificent, and La Coupée is well worth seeing and crossing. This spectacular isthmus, just three metres wide, connects Great Sark and Little Sark, flanked on both sides by sheer cliffs a hundred metres high.

The window in the rock is also magnificent, a geological curiosity well worth a detour. I enjoy a good lunch on The Avenue, soaking up the unique atmosphere of this island, where there are no cars, only tractors and horse-drawn carts.

That day, the island’s governor also makes the return trip by boat. He reads, completely unperturbed, even on the way back, when the waves make me fear that the “vessel” might be swamped or break in two. I’m very glad to reach Guernsey after this rough crossing.

The highlights and minor setbacks of the trip

The weather: a pleasant surprise

The weather: a lot of rain was forecast, but in the end I was lucky. It rained in the evening or late afternoon. The only very rainy day was Saturday on Sark, and even then, only in the afternoon. The #Channel Islands enjoy a temperate oceanic climate that often brings pleasant surprises, even outside the peak summer season.

The downsides

Exploring the Channel Islands

The downsides: the journey between Jersey and Guernsey took too long. Ferry schedules can be disrupted by sea conditions, requiring patience and flexibility. This was the main drawback I encountered during my stay.

The positives

Exploring the Channel Islands

The positives: the hospitality, the quality of the accommodation and a few pleasant culinary surprises on each of the three islands. Half board and staying in the same hotel made everything restful and easy. With no need to change accommodation every day, I could leave my bags behind and set off with a light load on my bike to explore the surrounding area.

Jean-Baptiste’s practical tips

Planning a trip to the Channel Islands and choosing a holiday format

Island cuisine

I set off to cycle, switch off and discover island landscapes that appealed to me, with few expectations when it came to food. It was a pleasant surprise: all three islands offered some wonderful culinary discoveries. Freshly caught seafood, renowned local dairy specialities and culinary influences blending Norman and British traditions enriched my experience. Seaside pubs provide welcome stops for a good meal after a day’s cycling.

Responsiveness and adaptability

I hadn’t heard of Grand Angle before, and I appreciated the company’s responsiveness and adaptability, particularly when ferries were delayed or even postponed until the following day. This ability to handle unexpected changes caused by sea conditions makes all the difference to a successful island holiday.

The verdict: expectations exceeded
