We wanted to discover Vercors snowshoeing on a guided trip. Since the departure was fully booked, Grand Angle offered us the self-guided version. So we set off as two, with accommodation, transfers and itineraries already organised. Here’s what we enjoyed, and what you should keep in mind before choosing this option.
Varied itineraries in the snow
As soon as we start walking, we’re struck by the beauty of Vercors. Snow-capped mountains, silent forests, vast white plains: everything calls for escape. The crunch of snow under our snowshoes, the rays of sun transforming the powder into a glittering carpet… We can only admire it. We feel tiny faced with this immense and incredibly soothing nature. The itineraries matched the level we had specified, and the provided GPS application allowed us to check our position offline. We appreciated the variety of the hikes: the itinerary had us alternate between forest trails, those along the ridge above the valley, those adjoining the ski area, and country paths. By swapping the snowshoes for quieter crampons, we were able to spot a fox and a roe deer, not to mention the many birds escorting us:-)

Already organised logistics
The benefit of being looked after doubles the pleasure: hotel bookings, taxi, hiking equipment, access to the GPS application, itineraries adapted to the level we had requested, luggage transport and half board, right through to chairlift tickets…everything was arranged. Hike light, from head to toe!

Welcoming stops
Each evening, in a cosy hotel or inn, we were warmly welcomed by the hoteliers, who really took the time to chat, give us advice about the hikes or simply share their passion for the region. To our advantage, we were between two school holiday rushes, and were able to enjoy uncrowded facilities. After a day in the cold, finding ourselves by the fireside or under a soft quilt is pure bliss.

Meals that matter after the walk
Discovery of local specialities, hearty breakfasts, with fresh bread, homemade jams, local cheeses and charcuterie and cakes or crêpes… gave us the energy needed to tackle the trails. The app told us where the nearest shops were for our picnic. After our days of hiking, we particularly enjoyed the dinners served during our stay: fondue, ravioli gratins and homemade dishes according to each stage.

The weather remained the only unknown. For us, the sun and snow were there; we returned rested and happy to have tried the self-guided formula.
