In the heart of the Monges massif in Haute-Provence, the Retrouvance® walking tour takes you along distinctive mule trails once used by the women and men who lived here. It leads you through splendid landscapes with wildlife, flora and geology that are distinctive and unique, even emblematic of the Monges massif.

The history of forestry and pastoralism reflects the changing human presence in this area, tracing the major periods when these uplands were inhabited or abandoned and highlighting the constant struggle between people and nature. This “little corner of France” will satisfy your thirst for freedom, discovery and unforgettable encounters.

  • A small, comfortable 30 to 45 L backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day
  • A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack or a soft-sided travel bag in good condition.

One bag per person, limited to 10kg.

  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, a sturdy heel counter and a well-treaded sole (essential)
  • Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
  • A fleece
  • Comfortable walking trousers (quick-drying technical fabric)
  • Shorts, T-shirts and technical underwear (quick-drying fabric)
  • A long-sleeved shirt (quick-drying technical fabric)

Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. Merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting sweat odours! (Brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.).

As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you cold when wet.

For your picnic lunch

  • 1 airtight plastic container (1l capacity) for packing picnic lunches
  • Cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
  • A water bottle with a minimum capacity of 1,5L (required)

For protection from sun and rain

After your walk

  • A change of clothes and underwear
  • Toiletries and a small towel
  • A small first-aid kit: personal medication, Elastoplast, Biogaze or “2nd skin”, gauze, disinfectant, arnica pellets and aspirin for minor aches and injuries… (Quite a list! But rest assured, your first-aid kit often comes home untouched after your week of hiking.)

Pascal 12/27/25

—  On the paths of Retrouvance, we often hear talk of the Monges. Les Monges! Les Monges! Les Monges! How exciting. And it's true, it's long and it's hard. But it's also beautiful. We've been through hell and back on these little dirt roads. Hell and heaven. And in these grandiose landscapes, for a few days, a few of us tried to disappear into this geography.

Barthez 12/27/25

—  The trip in the Monges is a nice trip. The landscapes are worth beeing seen. Sleeping in those secluded houses are a gret experience. We were alone and safe.
