Trekking in France in April: our expert advice

Why choose France for a walking holiday in April?

Travelling in April means choosing a gently changing season, ideal for walking. Temperatures are mild, colour returns to the vegetation and the trails are still quiet, far from the summer crowds. It is the perfect time to enjoy peaceful landscapes, whether along the coasts of the South of France or on trails at moderate mountain elevations that are becoming accessible again.

Our trekking options for April: self-guided or in a group?

At Grand Angle, we know that every walker has their own pace. That is why we offer two ways to experience your adventure:

  • Our self-guided trips give you complete independence on the trails. We arrange everything in advance: accommodation bookings, luggage transfers and a detailed route guide with GPS tracks. You walk at your own pace, with confidence, enjoying the itinerary our experts have designed for you.
  • Our guided walking holidays are designed for those who enjoy shared experiences and insights from a specialist. Led by a mountain walking guide with a passion for their region, you discover the secrets of the local wildlife, plants and heritage. The group brings a friendly atmosphere and a welcome sense of security in the mountains.

Which walking holiday suits your interests in April?

France is a wonderful playground for walkers. Our April selection highlights different ways to experience trekking. You will find long-distance routes, such as sections of the Camino de Santiago or the GR10, iconic coastal trails in Brittany and Normandy, as well as immersive trips through the natural parks of the French mountains. Each trip is designed to offer an authentic discovery of the region.

Our top regions for spring

In April, some regions are particularly well suited to walking:

  • The Massif Central : Explore the Aubrac plateaus or the volcanic landscapes of Auvergne as nature awakens.
  • The Pyrenees : Discover the colours of the Basque Country or cross the border on coastal trails between Collioure and Cadaqués, in pleasantly warm sunshine.
  • The Alps : Trails at low and middle elevations, such as those in the Vercors or along the scenic balcony paths of the Queyras, are accessible again and offer clear views of the still snow-covered peaks.
  • The Provence and Côte d’Azur region : Walk between land and sea, surrounded by the scent of Mediterranean scrubland, from the calanques to the hilltop villages of the hinterland.

Practical tips: how to choose your April trek

To choose the right walking holiday, consider your experience level and what you feel like doing. Would you like long stages or shorter days? Do you prefer the atmosphere of a group or the tranquillity of walking as a pair? The weather in April can be changeable, so bring suitable gear. If you are unsure, our advisers are here to help you find the holiday that best suits your plans. Feel free to contact our experts for personalised advice.

Walking as a family in April

The spring school holidays are an excellent opportunity to enjoy a family holiday in nature. We have designed family-friendly holidays with shorter stages, comfortable accommodation and fun themes to engage children and adults alike. Having your luggage transported allows you to travel light and make the most of these shared moments outdoors.

And if you would like to explore other seasons, here are all our collections for travelling throughout the year:

Juliette 12/27/25

—  A beautiful itinerary, magnificent scenery. Comfortable accommodation. Everything well organized.

Dominique 12/27/25

—  The whole group was delighted with their stay in the Queyras: highly professional guides (Jemma and Christophe) who listened attentively to our needs, hikes in a number of very different Queyras valleys that suited our level of ability, a quality family-run hotel offering a warm welcome and excellent meals, and minibus transport with punctual drivers who drove impressively on the narrow mountain roads. And, after a rainy first day, we had nothing but sunshine and mild temperatures, allowing us to take full advantage of the panoramic views of this beautiful region. A wonderful week! Dominique and the Méaudret group

Marie-Claire 6/23/26 The Tarn and Jonte Gorges

—  We were very pleased with the warm welcome we received from the locals, the “gourmet” meals at Le Rozier and Meyrueis, the eco-museum (which was very well organized), and the picturesque region.
