A specialist in treks in the Northern Alps, Grand Angle has designed a walking route for you that links the alpine pastures of the Aravis massif to the shores of Lake Annecy. This self-guided walking holiday takes you into the heart of an unspoilt area of Haute-Savoie, discovering traditional villages such as La Clusaz, Le Grand-Bornand and Saint-Jean-de-Sixt.
This route takes you from pastoral landscapes, the birthplace of Reblochon cheese, to open viewpoints overlooking the iconic peaks of the Aravis range, such as Pointe Percée. The walk draws to a gentle close on the lakeshore at Talloires, before you continue to Annecy’s historic centre.
This itinerary is also available as a guided holiday; discover our guided walking holiday in the Aravis_._

Program
1st day: an easy walk to La Clusaz.
2 options:
1/ a loop via Tête du Danay (1731m), passing through Les Mouilles de la Perrière, with a beautiful panorama of the Aravis range to the east, Mont Lachat de Châtillon and the Bouchet valley.
2/ a route via Pointe de Beauregard, passing Lake Ferriaz and descending to La Clusaz via Le Planet.
Bus transfer (at your own expense) to Lake Confins, the starting point of your walk. (Before 21
June and after 06 September, we will book a private transfer.)
Via Col des Annes (1721m), passing beneath the iconic summit of the Aravis: Pointe Percée (2750m).
Cross the extensive alpine pastures of the Confins plateau, then head over into the upper Bouchet valley and its beautiful mountain cirque, beneath Pointe Percée (2750m) and Pointe de Roulletaz (2077m).
The trail skirts several mountainsides to cross the easy Col de Borneronde, followed by Col des Annes (1721m).
You can have a picnic at the mountain lodge at Col des Annes. Then descend towards the hamlet of Le Chinaillon beneath the ridges of Pointes d’Almet, Grande Combe and Pointe de Deux Heures.
Starting from Le Chinaillon, you climb to the Guillery chalets and then to Col de la Colombière, 1607m. From the pass, you have a choice of two routes:
- Pointe de Balafrasse: you climb into the heart of the Bargy range, first to Lac de Peyre, then to Col de Balafrasse and Pointe de Balafrasse, 2296m where you can enjoy a beautiful panorama before returning along the same route to Chinaillon. 13km, +/-1000m.
- Tête d’Auferrand: reserved for strong walkers who are sure-footed on alpine terrain, and best avoided in bad weather (slippery, dangerous sloping ground). You climb beneath Pointe de la Botte to the alpine pastures of Tête d’Auferrand, 1981m, then follow the ridge through the Combe des Fours before descending to the Auferrand farm and back to Chinaillon. 13km, +/-750m.
Climb via the Aiguille Verte ridge (2000m) and Lac de Lessy. From Aiguille Verte, there are splendid views of the highest peak in the Aravis range (Pointe Percée) and the summit ridge of Mont Blanc. You then cross Col de la Forclaz and descend to the hamlet of Mayse (sheepfold and walkers' lodge, drinks and snacks). You then climb back up to Col du Planay, between Roc des Tours and Roc des Charmieux, before descending to join the route that gradually leads you towards Les Mouilles, La Tannaz and the village of Grand Bornand. You can enjoy a picnic at the Chalets de Mayse lodge (refreshment kiosk).
A shorter hike is possible today:
climb along the Les Alpages de Samance discovery trail and descend to the heritage-listed old village of Chinaillon, La Bouvardière.
You then climb gently beneath Roc des Charmieux towards the alpine pasture of La Tannaz, passing through Les Mouilles. Then descend alongside the Forclaz rocks to the village of Grand Bornand.
Morning transfer to Montremont (18km), (850m). Climb to the foot of La Tournette via Col des Nantets (1426m); from the pass, discover Lake Annecy spread out like a jewel nestled among the mountains. Descend to the foot of the Dents de Lanfon along the trail that circles the lake. You will reach Talloires, the most beautiful setting and village around the lake.
From there, take the “omnibus” (a boat that travels around the lake to Annecy), passing through Doussard and Duingt (at your own expense). If there is no boat, you can also take a bus to Annecy (also at your own expense). Overnight in a 4* hotel in Annecy, with breakfast included. We recommend having dinner at one of the
many restaurants in “Old Annecy”, a splendid lakeside district of Annecy.
You can leave after breakfast. However, we suggest a beautiful hike above Annecy:
To reach the Col de Bluffy (7km), take the scheduled bus towards Thônes, the same one you may have taken to St Jean de Sixt on the first day.
From there, you will climb towards the Mont Barret ridge (1065m), which you will cross to reach the Col des Contrebandiers (1054m), then continue to Mont Baron, an outstanding viewpoint (1254m). The trail follows the ridge to Mont Veyrier (1291m at its highest point, then descends to the shores of Lake Annecy.
We may occasionally need to change the itinerary shown, either for logistical reasons (accommodation being fully booked, changes in terrain conditions, rockfalls, damaged trails, etc.) or because of weather conditions. These changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

Hotel ratings
In France, increasing numbers of hotels and guesthouses choose not to have an official rating, including establishments that were still rated one or two years ago. This does not mean their quality has declined—far from it. Many guesthouses offer charming rooms.
If, for example, we specify a comfort level of “3* or equivalent”, this means that the establishment may not have an official rating, but offers a level of comfort comparable to a 3* hotel.
This is a self-guided trip, without a guide; we provide a digital travel pack that
includes: access to our smartphone navigation app, a list of your accommodation,
any vouchers required and all the information you need for your stay to run smoothly.
If you wish, we can send a printed travel pack with maps and route notes for a supplement of 35 € per pack. For requests made less than 45 days before departure, or for travellers outside France, we will make the pack available at the first hotel.
Available for groups of 2 people or more.

Equipment
In this section, you will find links to products from our partner Alpinstore, a French online retailer specialising in outdoor equipment, based in Annecy.
To carry your belongings
- A comfortable 30 to 50 L backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day
- A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, a travel bag in good condition or a suitcase that is not too bulky. Only one bag per person, with a weight limit of 15kg
Read our magazine article on how to pack your hiking backpack.
For hiking
For maximum comfort, choose a layered clothing system: warm base layers (leggings + top), such as “Carline” or “Capilene” (hollow fibres that wick away perspiration) + a sweatshirt or fleece jacket + a mountain jacket and overtrousers with a waterproof, breathable membrane (such as Gore-Tex or equivalent) for bad weather. As a general rule, except in hot climates and countries, avoid cotton, which holds moisture close to the body (and takes a long time to dry), and choose suitable synthetic fabrics instead.
- Hiking boots with ankle support, a well-treaded sole, a supportive heel counter and good waterproofing
- Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
- A fleece
- Comfortable walking trousers (quick-drying technical fabric)
- Comfortable technical shorts
- Technical T-shirts or base layers (quick-drying fabric)
- A long-sleeved shirt
- Walking poles (telescopic), very important for making walking easier. Discover all the benefits of walking poles in our dedicated article or how to choose your walking poles
Please note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the added benefit of resisting odours from perspiration!
For your picnic lunch
- Your eating kit: a plastic bowl, container or plate, and cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
- 1 or 2 water bottles (a total capacity of at least 1,5 L) – required –; an insulated flask for winter
For protection from sun and rain
- Sunscreen (high protection)
- Sunglasses
- A hat, cap or bucket hat
- A rain poncho or a waterproof jacket, such as a softshell or Gore-Tex jacket, and possibly waterproof trousers
After your walk
- A pair of trainers or running shoes for the evening
- A change of clothes and underwear
- A toiletry bag and a small towel
- Swimwear and a towel for the wellness facilities
- A small first-aid kit: personal medication, surgical masks, hand sanitiser, plasters, sterile dressings and a bandage, gauze, disinfectant, arnica pellets and aspirin, etc. (Please note that this list is not exhaustive and should be adapted to your own medical needs.)
Find these tips in our article #"What to pack for a hike".

Régine 12/27/25 • Tour of the Aravis to Lake Annecy
— A very enjoyable self-guided hike with spectacular views of the Aravis. The route guide was comprehensive and very detailed, offering two options for each stage: a shorter route and a longer one, allowing us to choose according to our fitness level or the weather forecast. The accommodations were perfectly satisfactory and comfortable, and the staff were very welcoming. The agency provided us with complete information about the entire trip, in addition to the route guide. We thank them for their professionalism, their availability in answering our questions before the trip, and their responsiveness. We highly recommend them.
Isabelle 12/27/25 • Tour of the Aravis to Lake Annecy
— We really enjoyed this trip. The hikes were very well chosen and varied. The organization was perfect as always, and the accommodations were excellent and very welcoming. Arriving in Annecy was great, and crossing the lake by boat was definitely a highlight.

— A great hike, with magnificent scenery, blueberries and ibexes along the way, and physically demanding if you take a few detours, which was our case. Very good accommodation in the evening and good food, very suitable for hikers :)
Jean-Yves 12/27/25 • Tour of the Aravis to Lake Annecy
— A very good week, helped by radiant weather. The altitude helped lessen the effects of the heatwave (week of June 14 to 19, 2022). The magnificent landscapes are well worth the effort after some steep climbs. Excellent hospitality, with sometimes the possibility to modify the half-board menu. Note: 1:25,000 maps or a hiking app are essential because the signposts guide you from one place-name to another, and you need to visualize them on the map before choosing which path to take (there are many trails in the region). For example, between St-Jean-de-Sixt and Les Confins, about 21 km, the direction to Les Confins only appeared 7 km before arrival. The same goes for reaching Thônes, whose name only appeared 5 km before arrival. Highly recommended destination, but good physical preparation is essential.
