Imagine a hidden mountain range, nestled between the lakes of Aix-les-Bains and Annecy, where time seems to have slowed down. Welcome to the Bauges in Savoie, an unspoilt gem of the Northern Alps, where majestic mountains, pastoral traditions and authentic villages shape a vibrant, welcoming landscape.

At the heart of this regional natural park, 14 municipalities and 3800 residents — the proud Baujus — passionately preserve the spirit of their homeland. To the east, a dozen peaks rising above 2000 metres shelter a renowned wildlife reserve, recognised for half a century as one of the best places to observe Alpine wildlife.

But there is more to the Bauges than its ridges: it also reveals unexpected wonders — natural springs, caves and gorges — along your route. Between each stage, local history unfolds through the traditional cheese dairies, the Maison du Parc visitor centre and the bustling Alpine pastures. Here, the mountains are full of life: they breathe and thrive.

And what better way to round off a day of adventure than with a slice of Tome des Bauges AOC cheese accompanied by a glass of Mondeuse or a local Gamay? A true taste of local character, letting you savour the spirit of these mountains.

Program

9:00 am: Briefing with our local partner, followed by a transfer to the start of the hike.
The Alpine pastures and Mont Julioz: You begin your hike amid the Bellecombe Alpine pastures beneath the imposing western face of Le Trélod (2181m). From the Col du Golet de Doucy, you then climb onto the ridge of Mont Julioz before heading down towards the Col du Plane through beautiful woodland. Your arrival in the old village of Le Châtelard, between the areas known as Bauges “devant” and Bauges “derrière”, is picturesque and full of charm.

Overnight in Le Châtelard with half board.

Option AClassic route5h45+478m-808m
Option BMore challenging route: +567, -917+567m-917m

On this stage, discover the pastoral character of the Bauges: typical Baujus villages (La Compôte, Doucy and Jarsy), traditional hay-drying structures known as tavalans, and the famous small barns called grangettes. As you walk through this landscape steeped in history, you can admire iconic peaks: Le Trélod, Le Pécloz, the Pointe des Arces…

Overnight in Le Châtelard with half board.

Option AClassic route: +585, -585+585m-585m
Option BMore challenging route: +700, -700+700m-700m

A beautiful journey on foot: After quickly reaching the village of La Compôte, a magnificent balcony trail towards the Fulie alpine pastures, with the Belledonne range as a backdrop (Les Grandes Alpes), leads you into the “historic” Aillons valley. This is where the Carthusian order settled in the 12th century. You can visit the Chartreuse monastery, which the park has converted into a museum space dedicated to rural heritage. Optional ascent of Mont Colombier (2050m), an elegant summit with panoramic views.
Overnight in Aillon-le-Jeune with half board.
Shorter option available

Option AClassic option: +817 m, -870 m+817m-870m
Option BMore challenging option: +1519, -1373+1519m-1373m

You will climb to the broad Col des Prés, which resembles a plateau dotted with alpine chalets. Pointe de la Galoppe offers views over the Chambéry basin, the Hautes-Bauges and the Belledonne range. Short transfer by car and overnight in a hotel.
Overnight in Les Déserts with half board.

Distance11 km
D+Ascent: 790 m
D-Descent: 650 m

The western edge: Your next day of walking begins beneath the beautiful ochre cliffs of Mont Margériaz. After the Col de Plainpalais, you will cross the vast forest on the Savoie Grand Revard plateau. Then, as you reach the alpine farms, the landscape opens up again to reveal a superb view of Lac du Bourget, France’s largest natural lake. If you feel like it, take the magnificent alternative route up to the Croix du Nivolet via the ladder passage. The Doria waterfalls, alpine pastures and summit views make this slightly longer route a wonderful combination. Whichever route you choose, a short night-time walk to the summit of Le Revard is highly recommended.
Shorter option available
Transfer to Le Châtelard after the walk, at around 16:00. End of the trip.

Accommodation

In hotels and guesthouses, some of which are fairly rustic, with shared bathrooms. Single rooms can be booked for a supplement.
If you would like to arrive the day before Day 1, we recommend “La Compagnie du Bourg” https://compagnie-du-bourg.com/, the accommodation at our partner’s office, at the starting point of the walk.
This fairly simple guesthouse allows you to be on site the day before your holiday, for example. Dinners are served at the restaurant “Les Clarines”.

In France, more and more hotels and guesthouses are choosing not to have an official rating, including establishments that still held a rating a year or two ago. This does not mean their quality has declined—far from it. Many guesthouses offer charming accommodation.
If we indicate, for example, a comfort level of “3* or equivalent”, this means that the establishment does not necessarily have an official rating, but offers comfort comparable to a 3* hotel.

Your stay is on a half-board basis, from dinner on Day 1 to breakfast on Day 5.

Some accommodation providers can prepare picnics if booked in advance (not included). Please note that you must request these 24 hours before arriving at the hotel or guesthouse.

Please let us know about any food allergies or special dietary requirements when booking; we will do our best to adapt your meals.

On Day 1, meet at our local partner’s office at 9am for a briefing and transfer to the starting point of the walk.

On Day 5, after the day’s walk, transfer back to Le Châtelard at around 4pm.

You can add an extra night in Le Châtelard before or after your holiday.

Take the train to Aix-les-Bains or Chambéry, then a Francony coach to Le Châtelard. For timetables, visit https://www.francony.com/lignes-regulieres_1012596.html or call 0479691188.

From Aix-les-Bains (25 km), take the Aix Nord exit on the A41 motorway and follow signs for the Massif des Bauges via Grésy-sur-Aix, Cusy, Lescheraines and then Le Châtelard. Park your vehicle at the meeting point for the duration of the walking holiday (the car park is unattended but safe!), and we will take you back to your car at the end of the holiday.

A number of our trips offer opportunities to swim, either along the day’s route or at the end of the day. It would be a shame to miss out. However, we emphasise that you alone must decide whether it is appropriate to swim; you therefore swim under your own responsibility and at your own risk.

France

Travellers, including minors, must have a national identity card or passport (EU nationals).

France: +33.

There may be no mobile reception on some sections of your hike.

France uses Central European Time (CET) in winter and Central European Summer Time (CEST) in summer. Check the local time for your travel dates.

The Bauges massif is a mountain range whose highest peak rises above 2200m, so it has a mountain climate. The region experiences oceanic influences that bring unsettled weather, continental influences that bring cold weather in winter and hot weather in summer, and Mediterranean influences that bring summer heatwaves.

Our favourite: “Glanes Baujues” by Jacques Chaize, published by La Fontaine de Siloé - “The Valleys of the Bauges” by Abbé Gex, Bauges Diffusion - “The Valley of Cyclamens” by Anne‑Marie Dubois. - “The Wolf Has Never Eaten Winter” by André Gallice. Available at the Bauges Tourist Office ‑ 73630 Le Châtelard ‑ Tel: 0479548428 - Countries, Landscapes, Farmers. A magnificent photography book by Philippe Mazure with “lively” text by Christian Combaz. Published by Fontaine de Siloé.

3432 OT and 3332 OT 1/25000 Blue Series maps, which you receive at the start along with the route guide. We also provide discovery booklets, offering real insight into the Massif des Bauges Natural Park!
