  4. Cinque Terre, Italy

The Dolomites, Italy

Inscribed in the World Heritage in 2009, the Dolomites are often described as the “most beautiful architectural work in the world” by Le Corbusier. And for good reason: their vertical walls and their sharp peaks, composed of dolomite, a unique sedimentary rock, blaze with rosy hues at sunrise and sunset, a phenomenon known as Enrosadira. This massif of the Italian Eastern Alps offers a striking geological spectacle, with its towers, its pinnacles and its plateaus sculpted by erosion. It is a true hiking paradise, offering a variety of trails for all levels.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo UNESCO

Exploring the Dolomites on foot is walking through the heart of a legendary landscape. Well-marked trails wind through verdant alpine meadows, run alongside lakes with turquoise waters and lead to welcoming mountain huts. Routes like hiking in the Dolomites around the emblematic Tre Cime di Lavaredo or more demanding traverses such as the Alta Via 1 allow total immersion. Each step reveals a new perspective on these stone giants, offering unforgettable memories to trekkers.

The Ways of Compostela, France and Spain

More than just a trail, the Camino de Santiago is a network of ancient pilgrimage routes, classified by UNESCO since 1998. In France, 71 monuments and 7 sections of trails bear witness to the spiritual and cultural importance of this medieval pilgrimage. Crossing varied landscapes, from the Aubrac plateaus to the hills of Gers, these paths are dotted with Romanesque churches, historic bridges and hospices that once welcomed pilgrims. Walking the “Camino” means following in the footsteps of millions of people and taking part in a tradition of exchange and encounter.

Compostela

Whether you embark for a few days or the entire route, the Stevenson Trail and the Compostelle routes offer a unique experience. The pace of walking promotes introspection and disconnection. Routes such as the section from Le Puy-en-Velay to Aumont-Aubrac immerse you in the rural heart of France, where hospitality is a living tradition. It’s an accessible adventure that leaves a lasting impression far beyond the physical effort.

Loire Valley, France

Inscribed in 2000, the Loire Valley is an exceptional cultural landscape that bears witness to harmony between humanity and nature along a great river. Famous for its majestic châteaux such as Chambord and Chenonceau, the region is also a sanctuary of nature with its forests, vineyards and troglodyte villages. The route of Cycling the Loire, which extends over 900 km, is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in France and allows a gentle and immersive discovery of this heritage. It is an ideal destination for organized cycling holidays, combining culture, gastronomy and bucolic landscapes.

Chambord

Cycling through the Loire Valley is an experience accessible to all, including families. The cycle paths, often flat and safe, run along the banks of the royal river and cross cities of art and history such as Orléans, Blois and Tours. A stay such as the family route from Orléans to Blois is an excellent way to introduce young people to the joys of cycle touring, punctuating the stages with château visits and tastings of local products.

Cinque Terre, Italy

Listed as a World Heritage site since 1997, the Cinque Terre national park is a remarkable example of a Mediterranean landscape where people have shaped steep slopes to cultivate vines and olives. The five colourful villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, clinging to cliffs plunging into the Ligurian Sea, offer a spectacular setting. Connected by steep hiking trails, these fishing villages have preserved their authenticity, away from motor traffic.

Cinque Terre

The best way to explore Cinque Terre is undoubtedly hiking. The famous Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) connects the five villages while offering breathtaking panoramas. Although some sections may be challenging, the effort is always rewarded by the view of turquoise waters and arrival in a new picturesque village. A self-guided stay in Cinque Terre allows you to progress at your own pace, enjoying the beaches, local gastronomy, and the unique atmosphere of this Italian gem.

Western Fjords, Norway

Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2005, are considered archetypal examples of fjord landscapes. These narrow and deep arms of sea, surrounded by rock walls that can reach 1400 m in height, bear witness to the power of glaciers that sculpted the Norwegian coast. The spectacle is grandiose: vertigo-inducing waterfalls plunge into emerald waters, while isolated farms, now abandoned, bear witness to a harsh life in harmony with nature. It is an invitation to a journey through Scandinavia as close as possible to the elements.

Norwegian Fjords

The trek in Norway takes on its full meaning in this region. The trails offer plunging views over the fjords, accessible to hikers of different levels. Hikes such as those overlooking Geirangerfjord allow you to rise above the landscape to grasp its full immensity. Setting out on a trek between lakes and fjords is the guarantee of an immersive experience in wild and pristine nature.

The Pyrenees - Mont Perdu, France and Spain

This cross-border site, classified in 1997, is an exceptional mountain landscape centred around the limestone massif of Mont Perdu, which rises to 3 352 m. On the Spanish side, it encompasses two of Europe’s largest and deepest canyons, Ordesa and Anisclo, while on the French side, it is marked by three spectacular glacial cirques, including the famous Gavarnie cirque. It is a landscape that illustrates both unique geological phenomena and an age-old agropastoral tradition, where shepherds and their flocks continue to shape the mountains.

Gavarnie Cirque

Hiking in the Mont Perdu massif is a geological and cultural adventure. Routes allow you to cross the border, such as by the famous Brèche de Roland, and discover the complementarity of the landscapes. A trek between Gavarnie and Ordesa is a total immersion in this UNESCO site, where you move from the verticality of the French cirques to the vertiginous depth of the Spanish canyons. It is a unique opportunity to discover one of the most beautiful massifs of the Pyrenees.

Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch, Switzerland

First Alpine site inscribed in UNESCO World Heritage in 2001, the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region is a concentration of Alpine beauty. It is home to the largest glacier in the Alps, the Aletsch Glacier, a river of ice 20 kilometres long, as well as some of the most emblematic peaks of the Alps such as the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau. This landscape is an exceptional testimony to mountain formation and glacier action, and offers an infinite playground for mountain hiking.

Aletsch

The region offers a network of spectacular hiking trails. You can approach the great Aletsch Glacier via scenic balcony trails, or explore the more secluded valleys of the Lötschental. For experienced hikers, itineraries such as the Oberland balconies traverse allow you to immerse yourself for several days in this high mountain setting. It is an essential destination for anyone passionate about the Alps.

The Amalfi Coast, Italy

Inscribed in UNESCO World Heritage in 1997, the Amalfi Coast is an extraordinary example of Mediterranean landscape. Its spectacular cliffs plunge into a turquoise sea, while colourful villages such as Positano and Amalfi are nestled in the coves. This landscape, of great physical and natural beauty, is the fruit of human labour, as people adapted their way of life to difficult terrain by building terraces for the cultivation of lemons and vines.

Amalfi Coast

Hiking is the ideal way to discover the secrets of the coast. The famous Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) is a scenic path that connects Agerola to Positano, offering divine views over the sea and the island of Capri. Other trails explore the Valle delle Ferriere, a lush nature reserve with its waterfalls. A self-guided itinerary on the Amalfi Coast can combine hiking with the discovery of historical sites such as Pompeii and the sweetness of Italian life.

Exploring a UNESCO World Heritage site is always a memorable experience. Doing it on foot or by bike means choosing to take your time, to immerse yourself in the places and to live an authentic adventure at the heart of exceptional landscapes. At Grand Angle, we craft journeys that allow you to experience these emotions. Ready to go? Discover our guided trips and our self-guided stays and let yourself be guided by our experts.
