The Dolomites, located in northeastern Italy, offer a hiking experience unlike any other in the Alps. Their dramatic vertical walls and sheer cliffs, which glow with a pinkish hue at sunrise and sunset (a phenomenon known as enrosadira) create unforgettable vistas. The region is a unique cultural crossroads, blending Italian and Austrian traditions, which is reflected in the local cuisine and hospitality of the mountain huts, or rifugi. With a vast network of well-maintained trails, the Dolomites are accessible to walkers of various abilities, making them a premier destination for mountain lovers.
At Grand Angle, we tailor our trips to your travel style, ensuring a seamless experience from start to finish. We handle the logistics so you can focus on the journey.
For those who cherish independence, our self-guided hiking tours in the Dolomites offer the perfect balance of freedom and support. You walk at your own pace, following detailed maps and route notes we provide. We take care of booking your accommodation in charming mountain huts and hotels, and we can also arrange for luggage transfers on certain routes. It's the ideal formula for experiencing the mountains with a sense of autonomy and serenity.
Join one of our guided group treks to share the experience with like-minded travelers and benefit from the knowledge of a local mountain leader. Our guides enrich your journey with insights into the local flora, fauna, and history. They also manage navigation and daily logistics, ensuring your safety and allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the spectacular surroundings.
Our itineraries are designed to showcase the most iconic and beautiful parts of this mountain range.
The Alta Via 1 is the classic, and most renowned, long-distance trail in the Dolomites. This hut-to-hut journey traverses the range from north to south, starting from the pristine Lago di Braies. While challenging, it is accessible to fit hikers and does not require technical climbing skills, offering a profound immersion into the heart of these pale mountains.
The region around Cortina d'Ampezzo, the "Queen of the Dolomites," is home to some of the most recognizable peaks, including the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Our treks in this area, like the Dolomites of Cortina Explorer, take you on panoramic trails with stunning views of these towering limestone pillars. The circuit around the Tre Cime is a relatively moderate loop that offers some of the best scenery in the Dolomites.
For those seeking an epic challenge, we offer ambitious long-distance hikes such as the Grand Traverse from Bolzano to Cortina or the ultimate trans-alpine journey from Munich to Venice. These demanding treks cross multiple mountain ranges and reward hikers with an unparalleled sense of accomplishment and a diversity of landscapes.
The main hiking season in the Dolomites runs from late June to mid-September. During this period, the trails are generally free of snow, the weather is pleasant, and all the mountain huts are open. July and August are the warmest and busiest months, while September often offers stable weather, quieter trails, and the beautiful colors of early autumn.
Consider your fitness level and hiking experience when selecting a tour. Hut-to-hut treks require good stamina to walk for several consecutive days. Be sure to prepare your body for daily walks with elevation changes. For your equipment, layering is key, as mountain weather can change quickly. Don't forget sturdy hiking boots, waterproofs, and sun protection. For a detailed checklist, consult our day hike packing list.
If the majestic landscapes of the Dolomites inspire you, you might also be drawn to other iconic treks in the Italian Alps or beyond. Many travelers who enjoy the Dolomites also appreciate the challenge of the Tour du Mont Blanc or the rugged beauty of the Haute Route in Switzerland. For a different but equally rewarding Italian hiking experience, consider the coastal paths of the Cinque Terre. The diversity of the French Alps and the pristine landscapes of the Austrian Alps also offer endless possibilities for your next mountain adventure.
Suzanne 6/29/26 • Dolomites Grand Traverse, from Bolzano to Cortina
— Be prepared for some demanding hikes with some long, steep climbs over passes (with some parts on unstable scree and a few places where you have a cabled handrail to assist). I was worried about how I would handle some of the more exposed places but found it less scary than I expected. The reward for all your effort are the stunning views and the satisfaction of reaching lovely refugios for lunches and overnight stays. Celebrating each hike with Aperol and Hugo spritzes was a daily highlight! The organization by Grand Angle was excellent and the app is a fantastic resource and guide. It ended up being fun following the instructions and figuring out the connecting bus rides. One other point - we highly recommend booking luggage transfer but be aware that due to how that works, you are carrying two days worth of gear practically every day of the trip and just topping up from your luggage when you do see it. Get your training in for this one and you will be ready for the succession of hard hikes over 10 days.

— A wonderful, challenging route with stunning scenery and comfortable accommodations
Catherine 6/30/26 • Dolomites Hut to Hut, from Lago di Braies to Tre Cime di Lavaredo
— Top trek, in top conditions, thanks to GA's flawless organization and generally excellent weather Varied and superb landscapes Immaculate trails, rarely technical (and when they are, they're cabled) Top choice of refuges (with one exception), it's very comfortable and you eat very well Don't underestimate the stages (and the succession of the 6 stages!): by treating yourself to a few variants (hard to resist an out-and-back to a little summit while passing a col, or to a lake that means a little 2-3 km detour (Landro), you easily reach around 20 km a day and 1200 m of ascent (not counting long descents: down to Cortina, down to Landro) We had opted for a loop to avoid bus/taxi logistics, which was great; the only transfer, from Cortina to Misurina, goes very smoothly Take the opportunity to stop off in Bolzano on the way there or back to visit the Ötzi museum!
