Set off to discover the Baltic States by bike and begin your adventure in Estonia! Bordered by the sea and dotted with lakes and forests, this small country offers a wealth of natural and cultural treasures, ideal for exploring on two wheels. After visiting the capital, Tallinn, a medieval gem, your adventure continues into unspoilt countryside as you explore Lahemaa National Park, the vast Lake Peipsi and Otepää, nicknamed the “Switzerland of Estonia”.

Cultural discoveries from Tallinn to Sangaste

The starting point of your journey is Tallinn, Estonia’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which you explore on a guided tour in English. In the upper town, you wander among towers, ramparts, palaces, churches, castles and Gothic houses, with the feeling of travelling back to the Middle Ages in a fortified citadel that was an important centre of the Hanseatic League between the 13th and 16th centuries. Panoramic viewing terraces offer exceptional views over the lower town, its narrow streets and lively squares, the surrounding woodland and the open waters of the gulf. After visiting this cultural gem, your journey takes you, between excursions into nature, to the lively university city of Tartu, then on to elegant Sangaste Castle, built in the 19th century in a style reminiscent of Windsor Castle.

A cycling journey through unspoilt nature

The beauty of its unspoilt nature, one of Estonia’s greatest assets, shines through in its magnificent parks and lakes. During your adventure, you cycle through Lahemaa National Park, one of the last wilderness areas along the Baltic Sea. This delightful showcase of Estonian landscapes enchants nature lovers with its rugged coastline and myriad lakes, forests, marshes and waterfalls, dotted with elegant manor houses and villages. Next, you reach the shores of Lake Peipsi. Europe’s 4th-largest lake, shared by Estonia and Russia, is fringed by long sandy beaches and dotted with fishing villages. The final nature stop on your cycling journey, Otepää, takes you into the heart of a region known as the “Switzerland of Estonia”, where rolling landscapes offer a refreshing escape.
