This cycling holiday in Germany takes you from Magdeburg to Hamburg along the banks of the Elbe.

The Elbe is Europe’s second-longest river. Rising in the Giant Mountains, it flows through Bohemia and Saxon Switzerland before reaching the North Sea through a long estuary of around a hundred kilometres, on which Hamburg stands. We invite you to follow the Elbe Cycle Route from Magdeburg to Hamburg, voted Germany’s favourite cycle route. In Lower Saxony, you will follow the “Elbdeich” (the banks of the Elbe), dotted with traditional half-timbered houses with thatched roofs, and cycle through protected natural landscapes.

Itinerary

Program

Arrive in Magdeburg during the day. Take the opportunity to visit Germany’s first Gothic cathedral, built by the first Holy Roman Emperor, Otto the Great, or the Green Citadel, an architectural work by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Overnight in Magdeburg.

AccommodationOvernight in Magdeburg

The first stage of your tour begins at the impressive junction of three waterways, where the Elbe, the Elbe–Havel Canal and the Mittelland Canal meet. From here, just a few kilometres remain before you reach today’s destination. Along the way, a detour to the Romanesque Jerichow Monastery is a must. You then cycle along the banks of the Elbe to Tangermünde, where you can stroll around and discover its historic half-timbered and brick buildings.

Overnight in Tangermünde.

Passing through Andeburg and other small, traditional villages along the Elbe, you arrive today in Havelberg, a small Saxon town on an island in the River Havel. Visit its unmissable cathedral, whose rectangular western façade, known as the “Sächsischer Westriegel”, is characteristic of Saxon Romanesque churches.

Overnight in Havelberg.

Today you enjoy a leisurely ride to Wittenberge, taking in the magnificent scenery along the banks of the Elbe. The Clock Tower and the Stone Gate, the town’s oldest building, are visible from afar.

DistanceApproximately 38 km by bike

You pass through the small villages of the Wische, an area of the Altmark, a historic region in northern Saxony-Anhalt. The peaceful atmosphere of these villages recalls those along the North Sea coast. You soon arrive in Hitzacker, one of the most appealing destinations on the German Timber-Frame Road, the “Deutsche Fachwerkstraße”, which stretches from northern Germany (the Elbe) to the south (Lake Constance).

Overnight in Hitzacker.

AccommodationOvernight in Hitzacker
DistanceApproximately 75 km by bike

The route is a little more demanding than on the previous days: you cycle along hillier paths as far as the town of Bleckede. But rest assured, you are back on flat terrain for the stretch to Lauenburg, your destination for the day. There, the beautiful half-timbered houses of Lauenburg’s historic old town await you.

Overnight in Lauenburg.

AccommodationOvernight in Lauenburg

You set off for the Hanseatic city of Hamburg through a unique landscape dotted with dunes. Take this opportunity to explore the city with a tour of the port, a walk along its bridges or a stroll down the famous Reeperbahn avenue (930m long!), known as one of Germany’s liveliest nightlife destinations.

Overnight in Hamburg.

AccommodationOvernight in Hamburg.
DistanceApproximately 57 km by bike

Your trip ends after breakfast. Make your own way back to Magdeburg.

We may occasionally need to change the itinerary shown, either for logistical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in terrain conditions, rockfalls, damaged trails, etc.) or because of weather conditions. Technical and practical information

Level 2/5

Moderate.
40 to 80km per cycling day. No particular technical difficulties. Mostly on cycle paths, greenways or quiet roads. Little elevation gain: a maximum of 100m per day.

You only carry a small bag with your picnic lunch and the things you need for the day. Your luggage will be waiting at your hotel in the evening: it is transported by the hotelier or by taxi, with a limit of 2 bags per person. Maximum weight: 20 kg. We recommend carrying a change of clothes in your panniers, as rare, unforeseen circumstances, such as traffic jams, can sometimes delay luggage delivery. Your luggage may arrive as late as 6 pm.

Bookings are available for 2 people or more.
Solo travellers can book, but a single room supplement applies.

8 days, 7 nights, 6 cycling days.

This is a self-guided holiday. There is no guide, and no local representative will meet you on arrival. You will receive a complete travel pack (1 per room), including a route guide with maps, a list of accommodation and vouchers, among other items. Depending on the arrangements, you will receive your pack before departure or collect it at your first accommodation. Your practical travel documents (vouchers, tickets, etc.) will be waiting for you at your hotel.

Accommodation

Rooms in 3* hotels or Gasthof inns (or equivalent), with a private bathroom.

Rooms

There is usually one bed base with two 90 cm mattresses, and each person has their own duvet. Rooms for 3 people usually have an extra bed added; however, the rooms are generally spacious.

Meals

Breakfast is included. Lunches and dinners are not included, but you will have no trouble finding places to eat along the way. Please note that dinner is often served early. Be sure to observe meal service times.

Please let us know about any food allergies or special dietary requirements when booking; we will do our best to adapt your meals.

For cycling

  • Cycling shorts or tights, depending on the season
  • Cycling gloves
  • A helmet (not compulsory but strongly recommended)
  • Sunglasses (to protect against the sun, wind and midges)
  • A windproof jacket
  • T-shirts or cycling jerseys
  • A handlebar map holder and/or a handlebar smartphone mount (and a power bank)
  • A water bottle

Please note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting sweat odours (brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.)!
As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you cold when wet.

For your lunchtime picnic

  • A plastic bowl or plate
  • Cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)

For protection against sun and rain

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A hat, cap or sun hat (helmet)
  • A windproof jacket
  • A rain poncho or a Gore-Tex jacket

After the day’s activities

  • A jumper or fleece
  • Comfortable walking trousers
  • Shorts
  • A tracksuit or a change of clothes
  • A lightweight, long-sleeved cotton shirt
  • A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
  • A toiletry bag
  • A small first-aid kit: personal medication, Elastoplast, Bio-Gaze or “2nd skin” dressings, gauze, antiseptic, arnica pellets and aspirin for minor aches and injuries … (quite a list! But rest assured, the first-aid kit often comes home untouched after your week of hiking)

To carry your belongings:

  • If your bike does not have a pannier, bring a comfortable small 40-litre backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day. If you have a luggage rack, you can secure your bag to it with bungee cords. Rental bikes come with a pannier in which you can store your belongings. Bring a small backpack as well; this makes it easy to carry your belongings when you stop to visit somewhere along the way.
  • a bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, travel bag or suitcase in good condition.

Beautiful routes, magnificent scenery, and high-quality hotels and bikes. However, the stages are uneven in terms of distance and are often long. Ultimately, the 600 km are spread over 9 days, when they could be spread over 10 or 11, which would make the trip more enjoyable because it would be less strenuous. Also, keep in mind that the towns we arrive in aren’t always particularly interesting.

A wonderful trip. We were also blessed with gorgeous weather, which added to our enchantment with this splendid region that none of the six of us had visited before.

We regretted not being able to take advantage of a more convenient half-board option, as we had during our previous stay with Grand Angle.

Very well organized, excellent choice of hotels (met the desired rating, warm welcome, varied and hearty breakfast). The only minor drawback: the Roadbook is very useful and mostly effective, but sometimes it confuses left and right, and sometimes it shuts off too quickly.
