Cycling in Italy is about more than just the ride; it’s a complete sensory experience. It’s the aroma of espresso in a sun-drenched piazza, the taste of freshly made pasta after a day in the saddle, and the sight of rolling vineyards stretching to the horizon. From the artistic treasures of Florence to the culinary capitals of Parma and Bologna, each day brings a new discovery for your mind and palate. This is “la dolce vita,” best experienced from the saddle of a bicycle.
Italy’s diverse geography offers something for every type of cyclist. For those who dream of classic, undulating landscapes, our Tuscany by Bike tour delivers with its scenic hills and rewarding vistas. If you prefer gentler terrain focused on culinary delights, the flatter routes of our Emilia Romagna by Bike trip are a perfect fit, connecting historic cities through a landscape rich in gastronomic tradition.
A self-guided tour with Grand Angle offers the perfect balance of independence and support. We take care of all the planning, including booking charming, locally-owned hotels, transferring your luggage from one stop to the next, and providing you with detailed maps and route notes. This approach gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, stop for photos whenever you wish, and linger over a long lunch without feeling rushed. It’s your adventure, fully supported by our local expertise and logistical precision. Explore our range of self guided bike tours in Europe for more inspiration.
The ideal times for cycling in Italy are during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm, the countryside is vibrant with color, and you’ll avoid the intense heat and larger crowds of the summer high season.
Packing for a cycling trip requires a balance of comfort and practicality. Essential items include padded cycling shorts, moisture-wicking jerseys, and layered clothing to adapt to changing temperatures. A lightweight rain jacket, comfortable shoes for evening strolls, and of course, your helmet are also must-haves. For a comprehensive checklist, see our bike trip packing guide.
If you love the blend of culinary discovery and scenic cycling that Italy offers, you may also be drawn to the vineyard-covered hills of Burgundy by bike or the castle-lined paths of the Loire Valley in France. For another classic European cycling journey, the iconic Passau to Vienna bike tour along the Danube offers a different but equally rewarding experience. Many travelers who enjoy cycling in Italy also come back to explore its mountainous regions on foot, discovering our incredible dolomites hiking tours or coastal trails like the cinque terre hiking tour.

— Very nice discovery, pleasant little roads and paths between Basilicata and Puglia, we didn't come across many cars. We didn't come across many cars, but rather a few farm implements, as this is a region of livestock and crops, so we weren't surprised. Normal traffic on the outskirts of towns to reach our accommodation. We return home with our heads full of memories and lots of photos. A 6-day, 410 km bike ride at the beginning of May in sunshine, with varied landscapes and lots of flowers. Ideal cycling weather.

— Wonderful family cycling trip with two teenage daughters. Sublime scenery, with flower-filled countryside (Easter vacations), lush greenery and wild, jagged coasts with no mass tourism. The villages are full of architectural gems. The roads winding through the fields are virtually car-free, and we were surprised that there was so little traffic even along the coast, with motorists very respectful of bicycles. Very nice and comfortable hotels in the superior category. Very good quality bikes. Extremely practical route planner. Beware, the wind can blow very hard and with our muscular bikes, we really struggled for two days with the head-on sirocco. No such problem with electric bikes. And don't hesitate to take the direct train from Milan to Bari for a truly green trip: it's easy and you can see the whole coast. Then a bus takes you to Matera. The journey is already part of the discovery! We absolutely recommend this trip, especially in spring!
