Cévennes National Park, a walker’s paradise

Ah… the Cévennes and its walking trails! Grand Angle offers a wide range of multi-day walking holidays in the magnificent Cévennes National Park, whose natural and architectural heritage, from sweeping wild heathlands to small villages built of dry stone, is sure to enchant you.
The rushing waters of the Tarn and Jonte are an unmissable highlight to discover on a self-guided holiday or on our guided holidays in the Tarn and Jonte Gorges. A complete change of scenery awaits in this area, designated a Grand Site de France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to numerous vultures and an exceptionally varied flora. This rich diversity is supported in particular by a dense network of springs and waterways in the Cévennes, along with different types of heathland featuring heather, bilberries and junipers, which you will discover as you walk between the Grands Causses and the Cévennes.

The Cévennes is also an ideal place to recharge… On our walking and spa holiday in the Cévennes, combine the pleasure of walks in the fresh air with the benefits of warm, relaxing waters at a thermal spa in the region.

The Stevenson Trail, a legendary route

It was in 1878 that Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish writer, set off with his donkey Modestine on his “journey across the Cévennes”, covering 220km. His route links the Velay and its gently rolling volcanic landscape, passing through the Gévaudan, with its legends rooted in wild forests and valleys, majestically overlooked by Mont Lozère.
Grand Angle invites you to walk this iconic Cévennes trail yourself, following the entire route, from Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille to Saint-Jean-du-Gard, or just the northern section or the southern section. The choice is yours! To find out more about the southern section of this legendary route, read Émilie’s account of the Southern Stevenson Trail.

Discover the region all year round

Yes, Grand Angle also invites you to explore the Cévennes on snowshoes, taking in Lozère’s vast snow-covered landscapes and enjoying the warmth of a log fire each evening at your charming accommodation, complete with a wellness area… a truly soothing escape in the depths of winter… Give in to temptation!

—  Positive, but the organization of my trip was complicated by the hard-to-find accommodations. A hiker like me isn't looking for top-of-the-range hotels, but rather friendly, communal gîtes d'étapes. Not always the case. What's more, I had to pay a cab supplement to make a stopover. This added significantly to the cost of the tour. I don't understand why Grand Angle doesn't anticipate a sufficient number of places to meet the very high demand at this time (June). There were no incidents with the accommodation bookings, the transport of my bag or the punctuality of the cab.

Hello Alain,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your detailed feedback on your hike.

The Stevenson Trail is indeed a particularly popular route, especially in June, and accommodations along the trail are limited. We fully understand your preference for shared, friendly hostels. However, the majority of our travelers generally prefer individual or double hotel rooms rather than nights in shared dormitories. That’s why we prioritize this type of accommodation whenever possible.

Regarding availability, our “self-guided” trips operate differently from guided tours: since our clients travel on the dates of their choice, we do not reserve rooms in advance at accommodations. During certain peak periods, this may limit options at certain stops and, in rare cases, require a taxi transfer to find suitable lodging.

We regret that this resulted in additional costs and complicated the organization of your trip. We are nevertheless delighted to see that, despite more complex logistics than usual, you were able to enjoy your trip without a hitch.

—  A 120km hike on the Chemin de Stevenson from Chasseradès to St Jean du Gard that lived up to our expectations, both in terms of organization and the hiking plan proposed by GRAND ANGLE. The stages are well calculated, the accommodation very clean and sometimes surprising… However, you need to be well trained to complete this route in 6 days.

—  Excellent hospitality; comfortable accommodations; beautiful region; and, above all, a very knowledgeable and helpful guide.

—  There were several groups staying at the Hôtel des Chemins Francis, all from different tour operators, so we were all mixed together a bit. I chose a group with a higher difficulty level, and it worked out well. The hotel staff are great.
