Why take on a challenging trek with Grand Angle?

Choosing a physically demanding trip means choosing an experience that goes beyond simply walking. It means committing yourself physically and mentally to routes that lead to unspoilt views, accessible only through effort. It means feeling the pride of a multi-day traverse through the Dolomites or completing the Tour du Mont-Blanc. At Grand Angle, we understand this desire to push your limits. Our role is to handle all the logistical complexity (accommodation, luggage transfers and detailed route notes) so that you can devote all your energy to making progress along the trail.

Trekking or hiking: what’s the difference?

Although trekking and hiking are often used interchangeably, they describe distinct experiences. Hiking generally means an accessible, occasional walk lasting a day or a few hours, often on waymarked trails. Trekking involves a longer commitment, lasting several days or even weeks, with greater self-sufficiency, sometimes wilder conditions and sustained physical effort. To better understand these distinctions and choose the experience that suits you, read our comprehensive guide to the differences between trekking and hiking.

Self-guided or group hiking: find your pace on a challenging walking holiday

Self-guided hiking: an active trip at your own pace

Our self-guided walking holidays are the ideal option if you enjoy walking at your own pace. We arrange your accommodation bookings and transport your luggage from one stage to the next. You set off with a comprehensive travel pack including detailed maps and GPS tracks, leaving you in control of your day. It’s the perfect format for immersing yourself in your surroundings, on your own or with a small group, with the reassurance of seamless organisation.

Group travel: sociable hiking at the specified pace

Going hiking with a group means benefiting from the expertise of a passionate guide who shares their knowledge of the terrain, wildlife and plants. The guide keeps the group safe, manages the pace and deepens your understanding of your surroundings. It’s also an opportunity to share memorable moments with other walkers who share your passion, in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere.

Hiking and cycling: options for active travellers

Ambitious treks and hikes

At the heart of our active travel offering are our treks and hiking holidays. These itineraries are designed for regular walkers who are used to long distances and substantial elevation changes. They may involve crossing mountain ranges, walking from hut to hut or following sections of legendary trails. For a greater challenge, explore our selection of some of Europe’s most demanding hikes.

The cycling challenge

Endurance and a taste for physical effort also find their expression on two wheels. For those who prefer pedals to walking boots, we offer cycling holidays on demanding routes, such as a journey across Tuscany or along Portugal’s coastal roads. The principle remains the same: beautiful scenery and logistics that allow you to focus on your route.

Our tips for your challenging hiking holiday

How to choose the right holiday

The key to a successful holiday is choosing a difficulty level suited to your fitness. Our trips are rated on a scale from 1 to 5. Challenging holidays generally fall between level 3 (strenuous) and level 5 (very demanding), involving 5 to 8 hours of walking a day and elevation changes sometimes exceeding 1000 metres. Take the time to read our detailed trip notes, and feel free to contact us; our destination specialists are here to help you make the right choice.

When to go on a challenging hiking holiday

The best time depends on the destination. For major treks in the Alps, the summer season, from late June to mid-September, is ideal for clear trails and open mountain huts. For destinations such as Madeira, Portugal or Cape Verde, spring and autumn offer milder temperatures that are very pleasant for physical activity. Hiking in September is often an excellent choice for enjoying favourable weather and quieter trails.

Challenging hiking holidays with the family

A challenging trek can become a memorable family adventure, provided you prepare carefully. If you are travelling with teenagers who already have hiking experience and are physically fit, some of our itineraries may be well suited to them. It is an excellent way to share a challenge and create lasting memories. For ideas suited to different ages, explore our family nature holidays or contact us to discuss a tailor-made trip.

—  Very interesting itineraries that often take you along less-traveled trails. Transportation and hotels were impeccable. A few inconsistencies between the app and the roadbook. The map showing how to get to Portela from Porto da Cruz is missing. Overall, we’re thrilled with this trip!

Thank you very much for your feedback! We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you also for your comments on the roadbook and the app—we'll look into them to improve our materials. We look forward to accompanying you on your next trip!

—  Deviously difficult mountain hikes and climbs, so be prepared and be in shape. Utterly thrilling with majestic views. Warm accommodations and great meals.

—  This was one of the best trips of my life!! Physically, the hiking was challenging, but doable, which was what my party was looking for. Every minute of the day, the views were SPECTACULAR!!! Literally breathtaking. Our guide took great care of us and we LOVED our 3 course meals every night in the different, fascinating cities. We also met so many fun and friendly people on the Tour. Loved it all❤️

—  Scenery was out of this world. The ascents were hard but it meant you could stop and take it all in, take your time and appreciate just what you are achieving.
