Ways of Saint James - Camino Francés From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Logroño
Embark on one of the most emblematic routes of the Ways of Saint James, a crossing that takes you from the heart of the French Basque Country to the famous vineyards of Rioja in Spain. On the programme: crossing the Pyrenees, then an immersion in the cultural and geographical diversity of Navarre and La Rioja.
Designed as a self-guided trek, this journey allows you to progress at your own pace from the fortified city of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Your route on the Camino Francés will be punctuated by stages of exceptional heritage: the Roncevaux collegiate church, vibrant Pamplona, or Puente La Reina, a historic meeting point for pilgrims. Your walk ends in Logroño, gateway to Rioja, where the history of the path in Spain meets wine culture.
Program
At the end of this long stage, perhaps one of the most difficult with the crossing of the Pyrenees, the reward: the passage of the Roncevaux Pass (or Ibañeta) and arrival at Roncevaux, the largest hospice of the Pyrenees (renowned collegiate church and cloister).
Through a forest route, from Roncevaux to Zubiri, “the village of the bridge”, with armorial houses.
Pamplona, capital of Navarre, with many traces of the pilgrimage. You can visit the cathedral and its magnificent Gothic cloister, as well as the old town of Pamplona. Dinner on your own.
Crossing the Sierra del Perdon, with very wide panorama. Night in the medieval town of Puente La Reina, point of confluence of all pilgrimage paths coming from Europe. Here begins the “Camino Francés”.
Towards Estella, the “Toledo of the North”, a very beautiful town with its old houses, palaces and churches that testify to its importance throughout history.
From Estella to Los Arcos, historic town “rich in wine and battles” where you can visit the church of Santa Maria.
Arrival in Logroño, on the banks of the Ebro, an interesting city with its beautiful cathedral and old quarter. You are here in the heart of the Rioja region, famous for its wines. End of stay.
We may sometimes need to modify the indicated itinerary: either at the organizational level (accommodation overbooking problem, change in ground conditions, landslides, degraded paths, etc.), or due to weather conditions. These modifications are always made in your interest, for your safety and for greater comfort!

A number of our trips offer the opportunity for swimming, during a stage or at the end of the day. It would be a shame not to take advantage of it. We emphasize, however, that you are the sole judges of the opportunity to swim; these swims are therefore done at your responsibility and at your own risk.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by Christine in OctoberA magnificent island; the agency did a great job organizing the trek; the hotels were comfortable and pleasant after a day of hiking; the driver was super friendly, always smiling, and very knowledgeable about the routes and sights. It was an amazing experience—I’d do it all over again tomorrow and would recommend it without reservation.
