Welcome to the historic heart of Ragusa Ibla, a labyrinth of narrow streets, staircases and golden palaces. This hilltop city, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the finest examples of Sicilian baroque. Stroll to the magnificent San Giorgio cathedral, admire the view from the Iblei gardens, taste a cannoli in an artisanal pastry shop: you are already in the heart of la dolce vita. Private transfer from Catania airport available upon request.
Sicily by Bike Between Sea and Baroque Towns
Specialist in cycling holidays in Italy, Grand Angle offers you the chance to discover the south-east of Sicily, between Sicilian baroque and Mediterranean coastline. This self-guided cycling holiday takes you from Ragusa to Syracuse, across the Val di Noto, a region listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its baroque churches and towns rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693.
The route alternates between hilltop villages, Sicilian countryside and unspoilt coasts. You cross Modica, capital of artisanal chocolate, Scicli and its ochre palaces, then the Vendicari natural reserve where lagoons and wild beaches shelter pink flamingos and herons. Between stages, you follow the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea, stop in the fishing village of Marzamemi and reach Syracuse, an ancient Greek city whose historic centre of Ortigia is explored on foot.
This self-guided format gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace: your luggage is transported each day to your next stop, and a GPS app guides you on roads and cycle paths. The daily routes cover between 37 and 52 kilometres, with moderate elevation gains suited to experienced cyclists. Accommodations are located in the heart of the staging towns, making it easy to explore the historic centres at the end of the day.
Itinerary

Program
After picking up your bikes, head for the sea! First stop, the Donnafugata castle, an elegant neo-Gothic palace surrounded by olive trees and prickly pears. The descent towards the coast that follows offers magnificent views before reaching Punta Secca, a fishing village made famous by the “Inspector Montalbano” series. Your day ends at Marina di Ragusa, a pleasant seaside resort where you can dine facing the Mediterranean sunset.
You first travel along the coast to Donnalucata, a charming port with pastel facades. You then continue inland, and the road climbs inland, through a landscape typical of Sicily: olive groves, stone walls and scents of wild figs. Recommended stop in Scicli, a truly cinematic setting, before reaching Modica, a spectacular baroque town and capital of Sicilian chocolate. Don’t miss a tasting in an artisanal chocolate shop: an essential ritual!
This stage takes you to a more secret Sicily. You cycle along the Cava d’Ispica, a spectacular canyon carved into the rock, home to ancient troglodytic dwellings and Byzantine sanctuaries. The countryside is peaceful, dotted with farms, vineyards and carob trees. Arrival in Ispica, whose Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore and Loggiato del Sinatra testify to the artistic richness of Sicilian baroque.
Return to the coast: you follow the wild beaches of Santa Maria del Focallo and cross the Pantano Longarini marshes, a natural site of great ecological richness where pink flamingos and herons nest. Following the coast, you reach Capo Passero, the southeastern tip of Sicily, before arriving at Marzamemi, a delightful fishing village with ochre houses and the famous Piazza Regina Margherita, the heart of local life. In the evening, savour a dish of grilled fish accompanied by a glass of Nero d’Avola.
A stage that is both natural and cultural. You cross the Vendicari nature reserve, a true coastal paradise: dunes, lagoons and ruins of an old ‘tonnara’ testify to the maritime past of the region. After a swimming break at Lido di Noto, the route climbs gently towards Noto, nicknamed the Capital of Baroque. Its historic centre, completely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, offers an architectural spectacle of rare harmony, bathed in golden light at sunset.
Last day on the bike, between sea and history. Following the Ionian coast, you reach Syracuse, one of the most beautiful cities of the Mediterranean, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005. Discover Ortigia, its historic centre surrounded by sea, with its lively streets, colourful markets and the famous Fountain of Arethuse. A unique place where Greek mythology, baroque architecture and Italian charm blend.
End of stay after breakfast in Syracuse.
Extend your stay to explore the Neapolis Archaeological Park, the Greek theatre, or simply enjoy a final cappuccino on the terrace by the sea. Option for private transfer to Brindisi and Bari airports.

Technical and practical information
Intermediate to advanced cyclist. No technical difficulty, but it is preferable to have already cycled for several consecutive days and you should be in good physical condition.
For added comfort, it is possible to rent an electric-assisted bike. Without this option, the difficulty level of this trip is rated at 3 out of 5.
The itinerary uses mainly small secondary roads, offering spectacular scenery along the coast and also through rural landscapes. As you approach major cities, and particularly during summer season, roads can be a little busier. Note that there are no cycle paths in this region, but the charm and beauty of the routes more than make up for it.

You can visit Italy almost year-round. Continental climate inland, with high temperatures in summer (hence the exodus from cities), but winters that can be severe.
Mediterranean climate on the coasts, with very hot and dry summers; in the far South, Mediterranean-African climate, especially in summer.
When to visit Sicily? The climate takes on a Mediterranean-African shade, particularly in summer: the days are long, often exceeding 35 °C, and the sea remains warm until the end of October. The best seasons to discover the region are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) with temperatures between 20 and 28 °C, the landscapes are lush, the baroque towns lively without being crowded, and the beaches still very pleasant.
If you can only travel in summer, plan a southern rhythm: siesta between 14 and 17 , visits in the morning and late afternoon. The afternoon heat is perfect for swimming in Marzamemi, Fontane Bianche or Vendicari, before enjoying a pleasant evening in the bustling streets of Syracuse.
In winter (December to March), the region retains a peaceful charm: temperatures remain mild on the coast (around 15 °C), and the markets, religious festivals and rural landscapes offer another facet of Sicily.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by Marie-jeanne - Etienne in JuneI made some wonderful discoveries on these magnificent islands, where the people at the lodging places are very friendly, respectful, and attentive. As for what to pack, there are some unnecessary items: gloves, a hat, and a stopper. Instead of a plate, bring an airtight container.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by GISLAINE in JuneEvery two days we discover a new island; since they’re all so different, we get to experience a wide range of emotions and exceptional moments—nothing but fun and lots of photos.
