Program

Arrival in Blois, check-in at the hotel is available after ~3pm. It is necessary for any visitor to this town to experience a trip to the royal Castle of Blois. It is an essential site of the Loire Valley. It gives a genuine picture of the classic architecture and rich history of the multitude of castles found in the Loire Valley. It was the residence of 7 kings and 10 queens during its time. This site is particularly evocative of the Renaissance. King François I, Chambord and Fontainebleau were some of the builders of this impressive structure and the Duke of Guise was murdered in the castle in 1588 under the command of Henri III.

*If you arrive early enough, you can organize a ride to the castle of Chambord and return along the banks of the Loire River (40.5km/25.2mi). There is an extra cost for the additional day of any bike rentals if choosing this option.

Accommodation2* or 3* hotel (superior) in Blois
DistanceLength : 40.5km/25.2mi by bike

Embark on our carefully crafted journey of our Loire Valley Explorer. A route that diverges from the river at times, but reveals a tapestry woven with historical and cultural threads. Explore gems like Candé sur Beuvron and the elevated Chaumont Castle, treating you to breathtaking views of the river. Don’t miss the renowned garden festival in its splendid park. Your day culminates in Amboise, home to a captivating castle and the Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final four years.

Accommodation2* or 4* hotel (superior) in Ambois
DistanceLength : 43km/26.7mi by bike

If you didn’t have the time to visit Amboise and the Clos Lucé on the previous day, you will be able to do so this morning before starting out. You will continue towards Tours after your exploration. From Amboise, you can also take an extra side trip to visit Chenonceau, which is one of the pearls of the Loire Valley. You then can come back to Amboise along the same road and ride to Tours on bike paths. It is also possible to take the train from Chenonceau to Tours. The railway station is next to the castle.

Today is one of the most beautiful stages of the trip. You will follow the banks of the Cher River up to the Renaissance castle of Villandry and its famously ornate gardens and pools. You then continue riding along the levee of the Loire River until you arrive at Langeais and its medieval castle built under Louis XI.

Optional itinerary modification for visiting Azay le Rideau: before arriving in Langeais, at the level of the Chapelle aux Naux, you cut through meadows and orchards along small quiet roads. Azay le Rideau is a castle built on an island in the middle of the Indre River. It is a jewel of the French Renaissance, edified during the reign of François I.

InfoItinerary : Tours - Langeais Optional - Azay le Rideau
AccommodationAccommodation : guesthouse (3* equivalent) in Langeais
InfoOption A Tours - Langeais
InfoOption B Optional - Azay le Rideau

You leave Langeais and its fortress riding over a suspended bridge. You then follow the wild Loire River in the direction of Bréhémont along the Levée (the same one since Villandry). It offers a wonderfully scenic landscape along the Loire River often showcasing historic flat-bottomed barges, such as gabarres and futreaux. This provides authenticity and a peaceful ride through this unique cultural region.

Optional side trip: We recommend taking the time to go visit the castle of Ussé. Locally this castle has been called “le château de la Belle au bois dormant” (Sleeping Beauty’s castle) since it inspired the famous French writer Charles Perrault (3.5km/2.2mi roundtrip detour).

There is an option of 2 itineraries to reach Chinon: The quicker one leaves the banks of the river Loire at La Huhaudrie to arrive in Chinon after about 12km/7.5mi, but this option has some quite steep climbs during this section. The normal itinerary follows the Loire River with a cycling path until it meets the confluence with the Indre River. You then ride through Avoine and Savigny en Véron, eventually following the banks of the Vienne River to Chinon. Shorter Option: about 28.7km/17.8mi by bike.

Accommodation3* hotel in Chinon
DistanceLength : 36km/22.4mi by bike

Between Touraine and Anjou, a wonderful stage that starts at the banks of the Vienne River and goes to Savigny en Véron. The itinerary then continues until it arrives at the confluence of the Vienne and the Loire rivers and at the postcard picturesque village of Candes St Martin. In Montsoreau, you should take a side trip to visit the Fontevraud Abbey. It is one of the most beautiful heritage sites of the Loire Valley, with its polychrome recumbent effigies. It is not a very far detour and you won’t regret it. If you feel like visiting another castle, the one in Montsoreau will also impress you with its fortress immortalized by Alexandre Dumas.

To go to Saumur from Montsoeau there are only ~18km to ride, but there are a few steep ascents. Especially the 18% graded hill in Parnay. However, the hills are short, and you will appreciate to ride through the vineyards of Saumur Champigny. There is also a new itinerary along the Loire River that enables you to go to Saumur while following the river and avoiding the vineyards and some hills. This is a choice you will have to make when you arrive at the “domaine de la Bienboire”.

InfoItinerary : Chinon - Saumur Optional - Fontrevaud Abbey
AccommodationAccommodation : 3* hotel in Saumur
InfoOption A Chinon - Saumur
InfoOption B Optional - Fontrevaud Abbey

The castle of Saumur really deserves a visit too before heading out of town. Today is a longer ride, but there is little difficulty on this ride except for the last few kilometers/miles that lead to the high points of Angers. Most of the stage you will follow the Loire River until Cunault, one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches of the Anjou region. You will climb towards Joreau Lake by the dolmen of Madeleine and go down to Gennes. You will then ride in front of the St Maur Abbey, the Benedictine priory of St Rémy. Next you will cross the Loire River to reach St Mathurin sur Loire, la Daguenière and Angers through the Trélazé slate quarries. In Angers, there is a castle surrounded with a fortress built by Saint Louis. Inside, you can see the huge Apocalypse Tapestry. Don’t miss exploring the town’s older historic neighbourhoods.

Accommodation3* or 4* hotel (superior) in Angers
DistanceLength : 59km/36.7mi by bike

End of the trip after breakfast and hotel check-out ~10am.

Occasionally, adjustments to the planned itinerary may be necessary. This could stem from trip logistics (such as fully booked accommodations, trail closures, or adverse weather conditions, etc.). It’s important to understand that these modifications are always implemented with your best interests in mind, prioritizing your safety and comfort!

Please Note: In Europe, more and more hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses are refusing to take part in the star-rating system, even establishments which were classified a year or two ago are now choosing to not take part. This doesn’t mean that they are of a lesser quality, in fact far from it. If we indicate that an accommodation is ‘3-star or equivalent to’ this means that the establishment may have chosen not to receive an official classification, but we believe the level of comfort provided is equal to that of a traditional 3-star establishment.

It is the client’s responsibility to arrive prepared with the items listed below to help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

The following items are required for this trip unless otherwise noted. When packing, think layered clothing systems that work together and can be easily added or removed.

  • Cycling Shoes – sport shoes that are comfortable for cycling in.
  • Socks – one pair for every day or two days of the trip. Sport specific padded socks, no cotton please!
  • Sun Hat – wide brimmed hat or baseball cap/bandana combo
  • Cycling Gloves – padded gloves used specifically for cycling.
  • Cycling Shirts – non-cotton, breathable short sleeve and/or long sleeve shirts (Note: long sleeve shirts provide better sun protection)
  • Cycling Pants & Shorts – nylon pants AND shorts, zip-offs or leggings
  • Windbreaker Layer – a lightweight wind resistant jacket or pullover
  • Warm Top – mid-weight sweater or pullover of wicking material such as merino wool, fleece or polypropylene
  • Insulating Jacket – down-fill or synthetic-fill insulated “puffy” jacket or warm, lightweight fleece jacket (Note: this item may not be needed in summer months)
  • Rain Gear – waterproof jacket and pants or high-quality poncho, breathable fabric such as Gore-Tex® or coated nylon. For the pants look for side zippers that will easily allow pulling them over footwear.
  • Casual Clothing & Footwear – comfortable clothes and shoes to wear in the evening after activities.

Important Note: Please, no cotton hiking/cycling clothes. Synthetic clothing is very efficient in drying quickly. Merino wool material clothing is also efficient in drying quickly, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of not developing a bad odor after use.

  • Saddlebag – If choosing to use a rental bike or your own on this trip, 2 saddlebags are included with trip.
  • Personal Luggage – small duffel bag, suitcase or backpack – for extra items and casual clothes
  • Cycling Helmet – (Note: mandatory for this trip) comfortable fitting, with rain cover. If choosing to use a rental bike on this trip, a helmet is included with the rental.
  • Hydration System – 2+ liters capacity, either water bottles or bladder/hose system (if planning to wear a backpack during cycling) and an additional water bottle
  • Headlamp – preferably with an L.E.D. bulb that works with AA or AAA batteries (Note: always test headlamp before trips and travel/pack without batteries in device)
  • Picnic/Lunch Kit – knife, plate or bowl, box with closeable lid, utensils, etc.
  • Phone & Charger – local sim card or international plan may be needed. Consider bringing a small power bank to use to recharge devices during trip activities.
  • Map or Phone Holder – Not included with the rental
  • Waterproof Travel Case or Pouch – used to keep important documents (i.e. passport, health/travel insurance, etc.) & phone safe from weather/water
  • Sunglasses, Sunscreen, & Lip Balm
  • First Aid Kit – see first aid kit suggestions below*
  • Personal Toilet Paper Kit – most public restrooms outside of lodging will have toilet paper available, but it is good to be prepared with a personal toilet paper kit to potentially use during portions of this tour. Along the trail, there may be the need to use natural settings for toilets (i.e. digging catholes, etc.) when there are no public toilets available. Kits should include toilet paper, wet wipes, sanitizer & sealable plastic bag(s) for carrying out used paper/wipes.
  • Toiletries
  • Contact Lenses & Glasses – if wearing contact lenses, please also bring back-up pair of glasses and contacts.
  • Prescription Medication – with emergency back-up supply
  • Money – It is good to have some local currency, often smaller local businesses do not accept credit cards and/or prefer cash. Some public restrooms require small amounts of cash to use.
  • Backpack – a small sized comfortable pack with a waterproof cover. Taking a backpack is useful as it makes it easy to carry your belongings when you go on a short walking trip along the way. If your bike has a rack system this bag can be easily attached or even packed within a saddlebag.
  • 2-3 Face Masks; 1-2 Over-the-counter Rapid Antigen COVID-19 Tests (Note: recommended but optional)
  • Travel Power Adapter – Electric power voltage in France is 230 V / 50 Hz and the plugs are E type
  • Support Braces – consider bringing any joint braces that may be currently needed or from past injuries (i.e. knee, ankle, elbow, etc.)
  • Sleep Mask & Ear Plugs
  • Bug Repellent
  • Quick Drying Towel or Bandana(s)

After years of experience planning adventure travel around the world, we’ve learned that anything can happen, and every traveler should carry a basic personal first aid kit. We want to ensure our guests are well-prepared and make smart informed travel decisions. In many of the places we operate trips, it may be challenging to find certain medications and/or first aid supplies, and sometimes common items you desire may not be available in the destination you are travelling. That’s why it’s good to be prepared and carry a small supply of first aid supplies, any prescription medication, and/or over-the-counter medications you may require during your travels.

First Aid Kit Suggestions

We recommend discussing your travel plans, vaccination requirements, and any medication usage with your primary healthcare provider before embarking on our trips. This helps ensure you have a safe and enjoyable travel experience.

Here is a basic list of what we think makes a good personal travel first aid kit:

  • Medications – Brands of your choice, all medications should be either prescribed directly by your doctor or discussed with a doctor prior to use.
  • Electrolyte Replacement/Drink Mix – brand of choice
  • Creams – Antibiotic ointment, Anti-Itch: Hydrocortisone, Arnica
  • Eye Problems: Dry/Itchy – Eye drops
  • Feminine Hygiene – Tampons
  • Wound Care – a various pack of bandages, antiseptic swabs
  • Blister Care – blister kit made up of items of your choice
  • Sun Protection – sunscreen, SPF lip balm
  • Various Items – Athletic tape/"KT Tape", Nail clippers, Tweezers, Small bottle of hand sanitizer, Sewing kit (clothing/button repairs), Disposable surgical gloves (1-2 pairs)

It is recommended that you prepare your items in the following manner for your travels to this trip.

  • Carry-on Bag(s): - This is the bag you will bring with you on the plane. We recommend all your pertinent information be in this bag (passport, travel documents, etc.) as well as your most important gear items (footwear, jacket, prescription medication, etc.) in case any checked luggage items becomes lost or delayed.
  • Checked Bag(s): - This bag will be checked and contain the rest of your personal items (clothing and gear, etc.).

Important Note: Again, it is recommended to either wear or pack in your “Carry-on Bag” the main gear items you need for this trip vs. putting them in your checked “Travel Bag” (in case luggage is delayed). Lost or delayed luggage has become more and more common in major airports for international travel since the global pandemic.

During this trip, the packing system needs to be in 2 bags.

Extra Luggage - “Checked Bag(s)” & “Carry-on Bag(s)”: This bag will contain all the items you want to bring along on the trip. It will be transferred by vehicle to your lodging, and you will have access to it at the end of each day of activity at hotels, but not throughout the day. Extra luggage is not allowed on this trip beyond the 1 bag requirement. Maximum 20kg/45lbs.

Extra luggage, not needed during your trip can be safely stored at your start/ending accommodations.

Saddlebags/bike bag (not provided unless adding bike rental): All guests will need a bike saddle bag, which they will be responsible for carrying during trip activities. Items in this bag should include anything you may need throughout the day during the trip. (i.e. rain gear, warm layers, water, sunscreen/lip balm, snacks/food, camera/phone, etc.)

To Transport Your Belongings (while cycling): If you don’t have a saddlebag & rack on your bike, bring a 30-40L backpack with a waist strap to carry what you need for the day (i.e. rain gear, warm layers, water, sunscreen/lip balm, snacks/food, camera/phone, etc.) as you cycle. If you have a rack on your bike, you can attach your bag with the help of bungee ropes or paracord. Rented bikes are equipped with a saddlebag where you can store your belongings. You should still bring a small backpack with you, so that you can easily take your belongings with you when you are visiting attractions along the route.
