Munich to Venice by Bike
Specialist in organized bike tours in Europe, Grand Angle offers you this mythical Alpine crossing linking Munich to Venice. In 9 days, this route takes you across three countries on bike paths and quiet minor roads: Germany, Austria and Italy.
The route begins in the Bavarian capital and takes you through the lakes of Bavaria, the Tyrolean valleys and the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site. From Munich to Bad Tölz along the Isar, then towards Lake Achensee with its fjord-like appearance, you then cross the Brenner Pass by train before plunging into the Puster Valley. The landscapes unfold: villages with onion-domed spires, historic towns of South Tyrol such as Brixen and Toblach, then the iconic peaks of Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
The descent towards the Venetian plain takes you through Cortina d’Ampezzo and Treviso to the gates of the Serenissima, among canals and Venetian palaces. This Alpine crossing by bike also exists in 12 days version with shorter stages.

Elevation profile
Program
Today you leave the capital of Bavaria following the Isar River, to find yourself surrounded by nature! Throughout this southbound stage, you pass through small typical villages and admire the many onion-domed spires. You will then reach Bad Tölz with its charming old town.
From Bad Tölz, you continue cycling along the Isar, to the Sylvenstein dam. Following the course of the Weißach, you cross the Karwendel Nature Park and pass the German-Austrian border. You then reach Tyrol, in the Achensee region. Take time to admire this magnificent mountain lake with its fjord-like appearance, nestled in the mountains, and treat yourself to a boat cruise on the lake (optional), before continuing your journey to Maurach or Jenbach, in the Inn Valley.
You leave Schwaz, Maurach or Jenbach via a nice bike path along the Inn to reach the capital of Tyrol and the Alps: Innsbruck. Take time to visit this superb city, between mountains and valleys; around the pedestrian streets, it offers you superb views of the mountains. The most difficult part of this trip, the crossing of the Brenner Pass, will be done by bus or train. From Brennero, you have a few kilometres left along the old railway line to Vipiteno then Fortezza, to finally reach Mühlbach or Brixen.
Please note: The South Tyrol or Alto Adige area is an autonomous Italian province that predominantly speaks German. All towns have dual nomenclature, which we indicate in the title. So Mühlbach is the German name of today’s stage, Rio di Pusteria is its Italian name. You will notice that the names are very different, it’s sometimes confusing!
From Mühlbach or Brixen, a very nice bike path takes you through the Puster Valley. Following the Rienz River, you will reach Brunico, in the province of Bolzano. Still following the Rienz, you continue to Villabassa or Dobbiaco, pretty typical Dolomites towns, where you will spend the night. Along the way, we recommend you visit the Dietenheim ecomuseum to discover the local culture of South Tyrol, the mountain museum “Messner Mountain am Kronplatz” or Bruneck castle.
If you wish, we offer you a bike check at Toblach.
After a good breakfast, head to the heart of the Dolomites via an old railway line to Lake Toblacher See. Admire the spectacular views of Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen) before reaching Lake Dürrensee. A small climb will take you to the border of the 2 provinces of Bolzano and Belluno. The rest of the stage is a beautiful descent to the pearl of the Dolomites: Cortina d’Ampezzo and its majestic mountains, the Cinque Torri. Your route continues to Pieve di Cadore, where you will spend the night.
A new bike path takes you to Longarone in Veneto. This town was completely rebuilt in 1963 after a landslide. Your route continues to Conegliano in the Treviso region. Take a stroll in the evening in this charming city, discovering especially its cathedral and castle.
You leave the Alps behind you to reach Treviso, the “courteous city”. Along the way, admire the numerous Palladian villas of the famous Italian architect Palladio. The Sile River will follow you until the Adriatic Sea and Venice / Mestre, where you can begin exploring the “Serenissima”!
Variant with arrival in Jesolo: You leave the Alps and cycle peacefully towards the south. You cross the Venetian plain by bike to reach the final destination of your journey, Jesolo, a characteristic coastal town where you can finish your bike tour with a refreshing swim.
We may sometimes modify the route indicated: either at the organizational level (accommodation overload issues, terrain changes, etc.), or weather conditions. These modifications are always made in your interest, for your safety and better comfort!

Technical and practical information
Demanding. Stages from 50 to 65km (+ 3 stages of 80, 90 and 96km). No technical difficulty but it is preferable to have cycled for several consecutive days already, you need to be in good physical condition. There are good climbs and descents. The most difficult part (Brenner Pass) is done by train or bus. The 2 last stages go downhill all the way to the sea. Possibility to rent an e-bike to simplify this trip, in that case the trip becomes level 2 to 3. . This trip is available for children from 16 years old. The route profile is detailed on page 12.

Hotels mainly 3* and 4*. On the Italian section, between Longarone and Treviso, the hotel offer is more limited and the hotels we offer are simpler in comfort, equivalent to 2* to 3*. In a double room with private bathroom. Possibility to book a single room (with supplement).
More and more hotels refuse any classification, even establishments that were still classified a year or two ago. These establishments do not lose quality, far from it. If we indicate, for example, a comfort level “3* or equivalent”: this means that the establishment is not necessarily classified, but has comfort corresponding to that of a 3* hotel.
Our German and Austrian neighbors generally don’t know about “double beds” (a single large mattress) and rarely rooms with 2 twin beds. Generally, there is one bed base and two 90cm mattresses; each has their own individual duvet. Rooms for 3: this is usually an added bed; however, the rooms are generally large.

Hotel in Mühlbach (non-contractual photo, subject to availability)

A number of our trips lend themselves to swimming, during a stage or at the end of the day. It would be a shame not to take advantage of it. However, we emphasize that you are the sole judges of the appropriateness of a swim; these swims are therefore at your own risk and at your own risk and peril.
