Crossing the Alps by bike: Munich to Venice

Crossing the Alps by bike by connecting Bavaria to Venice is an adventure that many cyclists dream of experiencing. At Grand Angle, leveraging our expertise in bike travel and mountain travel, we have designed this itinerary to offer the right balance between sporting challenge and cultural discovery.

This circuit of 12 days in self-guided formula takes you across three countries following the most beautiful cycling routes. In Bavaria, you run alongside the crystalline waters of the Isar and the Bavarian lakes. Then you naturally cross the Tyrolean valleys on the Austrian side, before turning towards the southern slope of the Alps. A train transfer at Brenner Pass allows you to access the famous Dolomites, where spectacular descents on old remodeled railway paths lead you all the way to Veneto and Venice.

Ideal for taking your time to discover, this stay can also be condensed into 9 days if your availability is shorter. Whatever your choice, you benefit from Grand Angle’s support at every stage.

Today you leave the capital of Bavaria by running alongside the Isar River, to find yourself in the heart of nature! Throughout this stage heading south, you cross small typical villages and admire the many bulbous bell towers. You will then reach Bad Tölz with its charming old town.

From Bad Tölz, you continue cycling along the Isar, as far as the Sylvenstein Dam. Following the course of the Weißach, you cross the Karwendel Nature Park and cross the German-Austrian border. You then reach Tyrol, in the Achensee region. Today’s stage begins with a journey by train or bus over the Brenner Pass which separates Austria from Italy. From the Brenner Pass, you will follow the old railway line that crosses the town of Sterzing then Franzenfeste. You have only a few kilometres left to reach the charming village of Rio di Pusteria in Italy.

Please note: South Tyrol or Alto Adige is an autonomous Italian province where German is predominantly spoken. All towns have a double place name, which we indicate in the title. Thus, Mühlbach is the German name of your day’s stage, Rio di Pusteria is its Italian name. You will notice that the names are very different; it can sometimes be confusing!

AccommodationNight in a hotel 3*/4* (or equivalent) in Mühlbach (Rio di Pusteria) or in Brixen (Bressanone).
Distance55km by bike + train or bus

From Mühlbach or Brixen, a beautiful cycle path leads you through the Val Pusteria. Following the Rienz River, you will reach Brunico, in the province of Bolzano. Continuing to follow the Rienz, you continue to Villabassa or Dobbiaco, charming towns typical of the Dolomites, where you will spend the night. Along the way, we recommend visiting the Dietenheim ecomuseum to discover the local culture of South Tyrol, the mountain museum “Messner Mountain am Kronplatz” near Bruneck Castle. After leaving Brunico, continue on the cycle path along the Rienza River to Villabassa or Dobbiaco.

If you wish, we offer a check of your rental bikes (or your own bikes) in Toblach.

AccommodationNight in a hotel 3*/4* (or equivalent) in Niederdorf (Villabassa) or in Toblach (Dobbiaco).
DistanceAbout 50 to 55km by bike

After a good breakfast, head into the heart of the Dolomites via an old railway line to Lake Toblacher See. Admire the spectacular views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen) before arriving at Lake Dürrensee. A short climb will take you to the border of the 2 provinces of Bolzano and Belluno. The rest of the stage is a beautiful descent to the pearl of the Dolomites: Cortina d’Ampezzo and its majestic mountains, the Cinque Torri.

AccommodationNight in a hotel 3*/4* (or equivalent) in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
DistanceAbout 30 to 35 km by bike

You continue on the old railway line to Pieve di Cadore. This historic town is crossed by the Piave river which you will follow heading south. Charming landscapes will accompany you until Ponte nelle Alpi in Veneto.

AccommodationNight in a hotel 2* at 4* (or equivalent) at Ponte nelle Alpi or Belluno.
DistanceApproximately 55km to 75km by bike

The Piave river remains your travelling companion for a few kilometres, you leave it just before Belluno (you can visit the town). From there, skirt the ‘Lake of Santa Croce’ where you can stop for a swim. However, do not stay too long, there are about forty kilometres separating you from your destination, the medieval town of Conegliano. Take a stroll in the evening in this charming town, discovering in particular its cathedral and castle.

AccommodationNight in a hotel 2* at 4* (or equivalent) at Conegliano.
DistanceApproximately 55km to 75 km by bike

You leave the Alps behind you to head to the next stage, along the way, admire the numerous Palladian villas of the famous Italian architect Palladio. Once you arrive in Treviso, take time to relax in this atmosphere of peace which gave it the name of ‘courteous town’.

AccommodationNight in a hotel 2* at 4* (or equivalent) at Treviso.
DistanceApproximately 50km by bike

Final stage before arriving at your final destination. The Sile river will take you to the Adriatic Sea and Venice / Mestre, where you can begin exploring the ‘Serenissima’! The alternative is to arrive at Jesolo.

AccommodationNight in a hotel 3*/4* (or equivalent) at Mestre or Jesolo.
DistanceApproximately 47km by bike

Technical and practical information

4/5: Challenging.

Stages from 30 to 60km. No technical difficulty but it is preferable to have already cycled for several consecutive days; you must be in good physical condition. There are good climbs and descents. The most difficult section (Brenner Pass) is completed by train or bus. The 2 last stages descend all the way to the sea. Possibility to rent an electric-assisted bicycle to simplify this stay; in this case the stay moves to a level 2 to 3. . This stay is offered to children from 16 years old. The road profile is detailed in the technical sheet on page 14.

Luggage transport is included. You only carry your daily items in a small bag or satchel, with your picnic and snacks. You find your luggage in the evening at the hotel.

Booking possible from 2 people.

12 jours / 11 jours / 10 jours of cycling.

Self-guided tour, without a guide. We provide you by email before departure with the list of accommodations reserved for you and all information to access and download the navigation app on your smartphone in English.
We recommend downloading the app and the specific itinerary before your departure by connecting to a Wi-Fi network. You can then contact us in case of difficulties.
A paper file (available in Italian, English or German) per room will be given to you at the first accommodation, including: the guide with maps, the list of accommodations as well as labels for luggage transport.

Video Briefing

A video briefing is scheduled at the beginning of your trip; you will find a QR code to view in the documents. During the video briefing, a member of the local team will explain the details of your itinerary and will be available for information or advice. Available in Italian, English or German.

Accommodation

Hotels mostly 3* and 4*. On the Italian section, between Longarone and Treviso, the hotel offer is more limited and the hotels we offer are of simpler comfort, equivalent 2* to 3*.
In double rooms with private bathroom. Possibility to book a single room (with supplement).
Increasingly, hotels refuse any classification, even establishments that were still classified one or two years ago. These establishments do not lose quality as a result, far from it. If we indicate, for example, a comfort level “3* or equivalent”: this means that the establishment is not necessarily classified, but has comfort corresponding to that of a 3* hotel.

Hotel in Jenbach (non-contractual photo, subject to accommodation availability)

Hotel in Mühlbach (non-contractual photo, subject to accommodation availability)

Our German and Austrian neighbours generally do not know ‘double beds’ (a single large mattress) and rarely twin-bedded rooms at 2 . Generally, there is a single base and two 90cm mattresses; each has their own individual duvet. 3 rooms: these are generally an additional bed; however, the rooms are generally large.

Dining

Breakfasts included. For lunch: you can order your packed lunch at the accommodation or have a meal on the way at an inn or typical restaurant. Please let us know when registering any food allergies or special diets; we will do our best to adapt your meals.

For cycling

NB: synthetic technical clothing is very high-performing. New merino wool clothing has also emerged; it is very high-performing and pleasant to wear, and has the advantage of not developing odours from perspiration. Generally speaking, avoid cotton, which gets cold when wet.

Clothing

  • A jumper or fleece
  • Comfortable trousers for walking
  • Shorts
  • A tracksuit or change of clothing
  • A lightweight long-sleeved cotton shirt
  • A pair of trainers-style jogging shoes for the evening
  • Change of clothing and personal items
  • Toiletries
  • A swimsuit
  • A small first aid kit: personal medicines, plasters, medical gauze or “2 second skin”, gauze, disinfectant, arnica granules and aspirin for minor bumps and bruises…

For your midday picnic

  • Your ‘kitchen’ kit: bowl, container or plastic plate, cutlery (spoon, fork, knife).

Against the sun and rain

  • Sunscreen, hat, cap or beret (helmet)
  • A rain cape or a “Gore-Tex”
  • If you don’t have a bag on your bike, take a comfortable small backpack of 40 L with a waist strap to carry your personal belongings and picnic during the day. If you have a luggage rack, you can attach your bag to it with straps. Rental bikes come with a bag where you can put your belongings. Get yourself a small backpack anyway; it allows you to easily carry your belongings when you go sightseeing along the way.
  • A follow bag: a backpack, suitcase, or travel bag in good condition.

—  Pleasant itinerary combining nature, cultural interest and city crossings. Little or no traffic from cars, trucks or camping cars. Water all along the route (river, lake, waterfalls, canals). Stages correctly sized to allow for rest periods. No major difficulties or changes in altitude requiring intensive training.
