Bavaria is a region that seems to have been made for cycle touring. With its gentle landscapes, rich cultural heritage and high-quality infrastructure, it offers an ideal setting for cyclists of all abilities. Here is how we plan your next adventure on Bavaria’s cycle paths.
Choosing a cycling holiday in Germany, and particularly in Bavaria, means choosing tranquillity. The region is criss-crossed by a network of cycle paths that are among the best maintained in Europe, often away from motor traffic. The scenery ranges from the fertile plains of the Danube to the green hills of Franconia and the foothills of the Alps, offering varied views each day. This is a destination where nature and culture strike a perfect balance, allowing you to break up your cycling days with visits to castles and Baroque abbeys, or stops at the famous Biergärten (beer gardens).
Most of our holidays in Bavaria are self-guided. The principle is simple: we take care of all the logistics (booking accommodation, transporting your luggage between overnight stops, and providing a detailed route guide and GPS tracks), while you cycle at your own pace. This is the ideal option for those seeking independence and flexibility, with the reassurance of tried-and-tested arrangements. You are free to stop wherever you like, whenever you like.
Bavaria offers several outstanding routes for your cycling holiday.
Cycling along a river is a relaxing experience. The Danube and Altmühl cycle paths are mostly flat and accessible. They take you through historic towns such as Regensburg and Passau, and through unspoilt valley landscapes. This is a perfect choice for a first cycling holiday, or for those who value cultural discovery and consistent daily distances.
For more spectacular scenery, routes around the Bavarian lakes are an excellent choice. Starting from Munich, you make your way to sapphire-blue lakes such as Starnberger See and Chiemsee, with the silhouette of the Alps as a backdrop. To find out more about hiking opportunities in this region, read our article on mountains in Germany.
The best season for a cycling holiday in Bavaria runs from May to the end of September. Temperatures are pleasant, nature is flourishing and all tourist attractions are open. Spring (May–June) brings flowering landscapes and long days, while the late season (September) appeals with its autumn colours and often quieter surroundings.
To choose the right holiday, consider how many kilometres you would like to cycle each day and the types of scenery you prefer. Our detailed trip notes set out the difficulty level, elevation gain and daily itinerary for each holiday. Feel free to contact us: our advisers know the destination well and can guide you towards the trip that suits you best.
With its safe cycle paths, gentle gradients along the rivers and plentiful opportunities to swim in the lakes, Bavaria is an excellent destination for a family cycling holiday. The luggage transport included in our packages makes the logistics considerably easier for parents. Each day’s ride includes fun discoveries (fairytale castles, ferry crossings and stops for tasty treats) that will delight children and adults alike. It is a wonderful way to share an active adventure and create memories together.
And if you would like a change of perspective, discover the Black Forest by bike or trekking in Bavaria with our walking holidays in Germany.

— A few days in Bavaria, with lakes to cool off in, charming villages, lush natural scenery, and gourmet breaks at the Biergartens. A delightful journey through a region proud of its traditions, among cows, dirndls, and onion-domed steeples…. A beautiful, simple, and authentic vacation in the heart of charming Bavaria.
Gerard 12/27/25 • From the source of the Danube to Passau
— A magnificent trip, the cycling facilities in Germany are remarkable, and when by chance you have to share the road with motorists, they are attentive and courteous, and you never feel unsafe. We had downloaded the routes on our smartphone and on a GPS, but we didn't use them: the Kompass map, which unfolds as we go, is in fact the most practical way of finding our way around.

Benedicte 6/23/26 • Cycle the Altmühl Valley from Rothenburg to the Danube
— All right, just the weather—it was really chilly. There was just one problem on the way back with the taxi: they weren't supposed to take our bikes, so we had to go back to the hotel to pick them up with our car.
Annie 9/28/26 • The heart of Salzburg and the lakes of the Salzkammergut
— A nice, easy ride with too many bike lanes along busy roads
