Discover EuroVelo 6 along the Danube between Donauwörth and Passau, amid the characteristic landscapes of southern Bavaria.

Leaving Germany’s woodlands behind, the Danube carves its way through the limestone formations of the Swabian Jura — sometimes powerful and direct, sometimes winding gently through graceful meanders. Its banks tell the rich history of this region, with imposing medieval castles, peaceful Benedictine monasteries and well-preserved medieval towns that seem straight out of a fairy tale.

This section of the Danube Cycle Route in Germany offers a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in an exceptional natural setting while discovering a remarkably rich historical and cultural heritage, within reach of all cycling enthusiasts seeking authentic experiences and beautiful scenery.

Program

Arrive in Donauwörth, a charming German town that once lay on one of the most important trading routes, the “Imperial Road”. This past is reflected in the colourful merchants' houses and monuments of the old town.
Collect your bikes at the hotel if you have hired them.
Check current parking availability and charges in Donauwörth or Wörnitzstein before travelling.

Donauwörth

AccommodationOvernight in a 3* hotel in Donauwörth or Wörnitzstein.

Cycle along lovely, well-maintained paths through the Swabian Jura towards Neuburg, with its beautiful old town and castle. Today’s stage takes you to Ingolstadt and its fortifications, where the famous “Beer Purity Decree” was issued more than 500 years ago, specifying the ingredients permitted when brewing beer in Germany.

Cycling the Danube Valley

AccommodationOvernight in a 3* hotel in Ingolstadt
DistanceApproximately 65 km by bike

Cross the floodplains, mostly following the riverbanks, as far as Bad Gögging. Shortly afterwards, a magnificent natural spectacle awaits: the Donaudurchbruch (Danube Gorge), where the Danube narrows to pass through the limestone rocks of the Swabian Jura. With cliffs reaching almost 100m in height, the valley is Bavaria’s “Grand Canyon”. Weltenburg Benedictine Abbey stands on one of its banks. Take the boat to Kelheim with your bikes (included). Depending on accommodation availability, you may stay overnight in Abensberg and take the boat the following day.

Weltenburg Abbey, the oldest in Bavaria, watches over the entrance to the magnificent Danube Gorge, which you travel through by boat to Kelheim. This short detour on the water is well worth it, especially as the 8 km of cycle paths between Weltenburg and Kelheim are not in very good condition.

Ingolstadt

AccommodationOvernight in a 3* hotel in Kelheim (or Abensberg).
Option AIf you are staying in Kelheim
Option BIf you are staying in Abensberg

Before setting off for Regensburg, you will need to gather your strength for the climb up to the “Befreiungshalle” monument (Hall of Liberation), which offers magnificent views of the surrounding region. The route then continues gently to Regensburg, the northernmost city on the Danube.

Regensburg is one of Germany’s oldest cities: discover the thousands of years of history of this medieval city in its old town, with highlights including its Gothic cathedral and the oldest stone bridge built over the Danube, in Romanesque style. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kelheim

AccommodationOvernight stay in a 3* hotel in Regensburg
Option AIf you stayed in Kelheim the previous night
Option BIf you stayed in Abensberg the previous night

From Regensburg, the cycle path takes you to the ruins of Donaustauf Castle, before you discover the Walhalla, a marble temple in the neo-Doric style built by Ludwig I of Bavaria. He intended it as a memorial to the great figures who shaped German civilisation: artists, military leaders, kings, emperors, scientists, prominent individuals and more. In Germanic mythology, Walhalla is the paradise to which the Valkyries bring heroes. Inside the memorial, you can see 129 busts of notable figures. Enjoy lovely views of the bend in the Danube, Donaustauf Castle and the spires of Regensburg Cathedral. A succession of charming villages then leads you to the Bavarian ducal town of Straubing, a beautiful medieval town. The large “Gäuboden” fair takes place every summer.

Regensburg

AccommodationOvernight stay in a 3* hotel in Straubing
DistanceApproximately 55 km by bike

Pass Bogen and its pilgrimage site, then ride through Pfelling and Mariaposching and continue to Deggendorf, founded in the year 1002. This gateway to the Bavarian Forest has an old town characterised by Gothic and Baroque architecture.

Straubing

AccommodationOvernight stay in a 3* hotel in Deggendorf
DistanceApproximately 40 km by bike

An easy-going cycling stage takes you to the Baroque town of Vilshofen, with its cathedral, old town and central square. Continue along the cycle path, enjoying lovely views of the Bavarian Forest, to reach Passau, the city of 3 rivers (the Danube, Inn and Ilz). Finish your cycling journey with a lovely stroll through the old town.

AccommodationOvernight stay in a 3* hotel in Passau
DistanceApproximately 55 km by bike

Your stay ends after breakfast. Make your own arrangements for the return journey (return travel to Donaueschingen is not included. Travel by train is possible, with regular daily services; the journey takes approximately 3 to 5 hours, with 1 or even 2 changes), or extend your stay.
We recommend adding an extra day to enjoy the beautiful city of Passau.

Passau

We may sometimes need to change the itinerary shown, either for logistical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in terrain conditions, landslides, damaged trails, etc.) or because of weather conditions. These changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

Technical and practical information

Grade 2/5

Easy to moderate

40 to 65km per cycling day. No particular technical difficulties. The route mainly follows cycle paths, greenways or quiet roads. The terrain is mostly flat, with a few gentle changes in elevation. Due to the more demanding stages, we only recommend this trip for young people aged between 12 and 17 who are used to cycling for several consecutive days.

You only carry a small bag with your picnic lunch and what you need for the day. Your luggage will be waiting at your hotel in the evening: it is transferred by the hotelier or by taxi. Maximum weight: 20 kg. We recommend carrying a change of clothes in your panniers, as rare, unforeseen circumstances, such as traffic jams, may occasionally delay luggage delivery. Luggage may arrive as late as 18:00.

Bookings are possible for 2 people or more; solo travellers can also book, but this incurs a supplement higher than the single room supplement.

8 days / 7 nights; 6 days of cycling.

We provide a digital travel pack containing your accommodation list, any vouchers and all the information you need for your trip to run smoothly. You will receive your route book and a map on arrival.
This is a self-guided holiday, with no guide, so you travel independently throughout your stay.

  • Accommodation

In 3* hotels, in rooms for two with a private bathroom. Single rooms can be booked for a supplement.

  • Rooms

German hotels generally do not have double beds with one large mattress, and rooms with 2 twin beds are rare. Usually, there is one bed base with two 90 cm mattresses, each with its own duvet. If you would like a twin room, please let us know when booking; we will do our best, subject to availability.

Rooms for 3 or 4: these usually have an extra sofa bed; however, the rooms are generally spacious (ideal for adults with 1 child). For 3 adults, we recommend 1 double room & 1 single room for greater comfort.

  • Hotel classification

Some hotels or Gasthof inns have no official classification or choose not to be classified, including establishments that were still classified a few years ago. This does not mean their quality has declined—far from it. If, for example, we indicate a comfort level of “3* or equivalent”, this means that the establishment is not necessarily officially classified, but offers a level of comfort corresponding to that of a 3* hotel.

  • Meals

Breakfast is included. Dinner and lunch are not included, but you will have no trouble finding somewhere to eat along the way. Please note: dinner is often served early. Make sure you observe meal service times.

For cycling

  • Short or long cycling shorts, depending on the season
  • Cycling gloves
  • A helmet
  • Sunglasses (to protect against the sun, wind and midges)
  • A windproof jacket
  • T-shirts or cycling jerseys
  • A handlebar map holder or a handlebar smartphone mount and a power bank
  • A water bottle

Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting sweat odours (brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.)!
As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you cold when wet.

Protection against sun and rain

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A hat, cap or bucket hat (helmet)
  • A windproof jacket
  • A rain poncho or a Gore-Tex jacket
  • A jumper or fleece
  • Comfortable walking trousers
  • A pair of shorts
  • A tracksuit or a change of clothes
  • A lightweight, long-sleeved cotton shirt
  • A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
  • Spare clothes and underwear
  • A toiletry bag
  • Swimwear
  • A small first-aid kit: personal medication, adhesive strapping tape, Biogaze or “2nd skin”, gauze, antiseptic, arnica granules and aspirin for minor aches and injuries…
  • If your bike has no pannier, bring a comfortable small 40-litre backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic during the day. If you have a luggage rack, you can secure your bag to it with bungee cords. Rental bikes come with a pannier for your belongings. Bring a small backpack as well; this makes it easy to carry your belongings when you stop to visit places along the way.
  • A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack or travel bag in good condition

—  This trip is an interesting adventure. The evening stopover towns are well chosen, as they are lively and artistic. Our accommodations are of a high standard. It's a pity, though, that this year there seems to have been a lot of work on the cycle paths, which has led to long detour in some places. In spite of everything, our ride along this part of the Danube will be fondly remembered.
