Why choose Germany for your next active holiday?

Germany is a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to its varied geography and outstanding infrastructure. The Bavarian Alps provide a stunning backdrop for mountain hikes, while the country’s iconic rivers, such as the Danube, offer some of Europe’s most beautiful and accessible cycling paths. The country combines spectacular nature, rich cultural heritage, and a warm welcome, making it an ideal setting for an active getaway.

Our active tours in Germany

Cycling trips: along the water

Germany is a paradise for cyclists, with thousands of kilometers of well-marked and secure cycle paths. Our flagship trips often follow the country’s great rivers. The Danube River by Bike, from Passau to Vienna, is a European classic, accessible to all, that winds through picturesque landscapes and historic cities. For a different but equally charming experience, the Lake Constance bike tour takes you through three countries, offering beautiful panoramas between water and mountains. We offer a variety of bicycle tours in Germany, including comfortable bike and boat formulas that allow you to discover the region without changing accommodation each night.

Hiking and trekking in the Alps

For hiking enthusiasts, the German Alps are an exceptional playground. Our itineraries focus on the Bavarian Alps, known for their green pastures, pristine lakes, and majestic peaks. One of our most iconic routes is the great alpine crossing from Munich to Venice, an immersive trek that starts in the heart of Bavaria to cross the Alps to Italy. This journey offers a gradual immersion into the high mountains. Discover our various options for hiking in Germany, particularly for hiking in the Bavarian Alps.

How to choose your trip in Germany?

When is the best time to go?

The ideal season for cycling in Germany is from spring to autumn, between April and October, when temperatures are pleasant and nature is at its most vibrant. For alpine treks, the season is shorter, from late June to mid-September, to ensure optimal snow-free conditions. An indian summer can make cycling in autumn particularly pleasant.

Guided or self-guided?

With Grand Angle, you have the choice. Our self-guided tours offer you complete freedom. We take care of the logistics, including booking charming accommodations and transferring your luggage, while you cycle or walk at your own pace with our detailed travel documents. For those who prefer to be accompanied, our guided tours allow you to benefit from the expertise of a local guide who will share their knowledge of the region.

Before you leave, don’t forget to consult our packing lists, whether it’s for your day hike packing list or your bike trip packing guide.

Travelers who appreciate the landscapes of Germany often extend their exploration to neighboring Austria, where alpine culture and river cycling are also central. You can continue your journey with bike tours in Austria or discover magnificent trails with our hiking trips in Austria. If you enjoy long-distance cycling routes, the Danube cycle path is a must, but also consider other major European routes such as the one in the Loire Valley or the Vélodyssée along the French Atlantic coast for different atmospheres.

—  A few days in Bavaria, with lakes to cool off in, charming villages, lush natural scenery, and gourmet breaks at the Biergartens. A delightful journey through a region proud of its traditions, among cows, dirndls, and onion-domed steeples…. A beautiful, simple, and authentic vacation in the heart of charming Bavaria.

—  For two weeks in late May and early June 2026, my partner and I cycled the Danube from Passau in Germany to Budapest in Hungary — roughly 650km over 12 riding days, with one rest day in Vienna. It was an unforgettable way to see Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants real immersion in a region rather than a postcard version of it. The Ride: Each day followed the river closely, which meant the scenery did the work for us: flat, well-paved trails through farmland, vineyards and forest, broken up by small riverside towns where we'd stop for a coffee or a Coke Zero and just take it in. Distances ranged from a gentle 40km to a punishing 73km, and the route quietly built our fitness and our saddle tolerance as it went. The landscape and feel of the trip changed noticeably as we crossed borders — Germany and Austria felt rural and easy, Slovakia had a slightly rougher, “Eastern Bloc” edge as we approached Bratislava, and Hungary's stretch into Győr and Budapest brought flatter farmland and a memorable ferry ride into the capital on our final afternoon. A heatwave hit partway through (low 30s and climbing), which made the cooler, overcast final days a relief. Accommodation: The hotels were a real highlight and varied wonderfully — corporate hotels in the bigger cities (a Marriott in Linz, the NH Danube City in Vienna, Three Corners Lifestyle in Budapest), and characterful converted monasteries in the smaller towns (Klassen Hotel in Győr, Altes Kloster in Hainburg). Standouts were the ones with strong showers and proper beds after a long day in the saddle, and the family-run Gasthof Zum Schwan in Traismauer felt like genuine local stays rather than tourist stops. Luggage transfer between hotels worked seamlessly throughout, which made the whole trip far less stressful and even though we arrived before the check-in time, each of the hotels did their best to accommodate us. The Food: Food was a daily adventure of its own — hearty German and Austrian breakfasts of cold meats, cheeses and coffee, black pudding and crackling pork in Linz, cheese boards and local wine in the smaller towns, and a fantastic, if relentless, final spread of fermented salad, goulash soup and pork knuckle just before the last day's ride. Vienna brought a welcome change of pace with a lively dinner with old friends, and small touches — an evening Aperol spritz, a local pub recommended by the hotel, a quiet soup shared after a long day — added up to some of the best memories of the trip. How it felt: What stayed with us most was the rhythm of it: pack, ride, arrive, shower, eat, sleep, repeat — and how that simplicity let the country come to us rather than the other way around. There were tough moments (saddle soreness, a sudden thunderstorm that soaked us at a castle ruin, bees, flies, bugs on the long straight stretches), but they were far outweighed by the quiet stretches of river trail, the small-town charm, and the satisfaction of rolling into Budapest having covered the whole 650km under our own power. It was equal parts physical challenge, cultural immersion and genuine relaxation, and easily one of the best trips we've done. In Summary: a beautifully organized, well-paced cycling trip through four countries, with excellent accommodation, memorable food, and a real sense of accomplishment at the finish line in Budapest. Highly recommended.
