Choosing to hike in autumn means enjoying milder temperatures, ideal for comfortable walking, and seeing landscapes transformed by vibrant seasonal colors. The trails are generally less crowded than in summer, allowing for a more peaceful and personal connection with nature. Whether it’s the golden vineyards of Italy or the sun-drenched coasts of Greece, autumn offers a unique and rewarding hiking experience.
At Grand Angle, we believe in travel that suits your style. Our self guided tour europe options provide you with detailed maps and notes, offering complete freedom to explore at your own pace. If you prefer the camaraderie of a group and the insights of a local expert, our guided tours in europe are the perfect fit. We offer both formulas for our europe hiking tours, from self guided hiking across rugged coastlines to guided walking holidays in france through historic landscapes.
Autumn’s mild climate opens up a host of destinations. Here are some of our travelers’favorites for this season:
The best month for your trip depends on your destination. Hiking september and hiking october offer warm and stable conditions in most of our destinations, from the Alps to the Mediterranean. For southern regions like Crete or the Cyclades, hiking november can still be very pleasant, with mild temperatures and quiet trails.
Autumn weather can be changeable, so layering is key. Be prepared with a waterproof jacket, warm layers, and sturdy hiking shoes. Even on sunny days, the air can be cool in the mountains or on the coast. For a detailed checklist, read our expert advice on what to include in your day hike packing list.
Travelers who appreciate the tranquility and mild weather of hiking autumn often find that hiking spring offers a similar experience, with the added beauty of blooming wildflowers. Many of our flagship treks are available in both seasons, each offering a unique perspective on the landscape.
If you enjoy walking, you might also love exploring Europe by bike. Autumn is a fantastic season for cycling, with comfortable temperatures for pedaling. Consider exploring our cycling in autumn trips for a different kind of active holiday. For example, those drawn to the cultural paths of our walking tours greece might also enjoy the coastal routes of our greece bike tours. Jean-Michel 6/23/26 • Hiking in Greece: Self-guided trip in the Cyclades
— These are some really beautiful hikes, but June 10–19 is a little too late in the season because of the heat. For most of the hikes, it’s impossible to set out early due to bus schedules and breakfast times at the hotels.
Jean_Louis 6/29/26 • Corsica: Northern GR20 with luggage transfers
— The route is as difficult as stated in the brochure, even dangerous in some sections, but extraordinarily beautiful, all the more so as we had good weather all week. The guide was friendly and attentive whenever one of us ran into difficulty, and the welcome at the refuges was warm. To be done by fit people who aren't prone to vertigo!

Evelyne 7/6/26
— A magnificent hike, very varied. The on-site agent (Javi) was very competent and friendly, and taught us a lot about Menorca, its history, its wildlife, its flora and its birds, and orchestrated our stay perfectly. A hike best done in spring or autumn.
