From Koblenz to Sarrebourg - The Moselle and Saar by bike and boat
5 · 2 reviewsDiscover the Moselle and Saar valleys in an original way: by bike, with a comfortable hotel-boat as your home base that follows you along the water. This bike-and-boat stay concept allows you to cycle without luggage constraints, returning to your cabin moored in a new picturesque port each evening.
Your route, possible in both directions between Koblenz and Sarrebourg, follows the developed banks of both rivers. The stages, mostly flat, are accessible and guide you through a landscape where terraced vineyards sit alongside imposing hilltop fortresses. It is an ideal way to discover the riches of Germany by bike, in complete peace of mind.
The region’s history, dating back to Roman times, unfolds with every pedal stroke. You will be captivated by the silhouette of Reichsburg Castle dominating Cochem or the romantic ruins of Traben-Trarbach. The stage at Trier, Germany’s oldest city, is a highlight with impressive remains such as the Porta Nigra. This journey is an immersion in an authentic Germany, rich in history and landscapes.
This self-guided journey combines the pleasure of a gentle activity, cultural discovery, and the comfort of unique accommodation. Between visits to castles and villages, you’ll have plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere of the wine towns and taste the renowned wines of the Moselle.
Itinerary
Program
You begin the day with a short cruise to Alken. Your cycling stage begins here and takes you to Moselkern, then to Cochem. Cochem is a charming small town with historic half-timbered houses and a picturesque town centre.
Night on board the boat.
After breakfast, you will head to Beilstein, which you can explore during a short visit. You will pass through Europe’s steepest vineyard at Bremmer Calmont. The day ends in the wine village of Zell on the Moselle. We recommend taking time to taste the delicious Moselle wines.
Night on board the boat.

You will cycle via Pfalzel to Trier, where the boat will be waiting for you. Trier is one of the oldest cities in Germany. Its Roman roots are still visible through impressive buildings, such as the Porta Nigra, Constantine Basilica, and the Amphitheatre.
Night on board the boat.
By bike, you follow the river to Wasserbillig, Luxembourg, then to Saarburg, also called ‘Little Venice’. Stroll through narrow streets with beautiful timber-framed houses, baroque monuments, and colourful fishermen’s cottages.
Night on board the boat.
Please note, the times and routes given may be modified depending on weather and technical conditions (locks), or other cases of force majeure. In case of extreme flooding or water levels being too low, we reserve the right to modify or organise certain stages by bus or to cancel a stay at short notice, without our liability being engaged (case of force majeure); the same applies in case of bridge or lock repairs, or breakdown of the boat.
Note! Saarburg in Germany is spelled Saarburg in German. This is not the French town Sarrebourg. Do not get confused if you are arriving by train there is 150km of difference between the two towns! For clarity we have used the German name.
Please note, places on board the boats are very limited and our bike and boat stays fill up quickly. We therefore recommend booking as early as possible to ensure you can depart on one of these stays.
Minimum number of participants: 75 people. Must be reached 21 days before departure for it to be confirmed.

A number of our trips lend themselves to swimming, during a stage or at the end of the day. It would be a shame not to take advantage of this. However, we emphasize that you are the sole judges of the advisability of swimming; these swimming sessions are therefore at your responsibility and at your own risk.

Please indicate your height at booking.
These are quality German bikes, brand ‘Velo de Ville’ or equivalent, which will ensure you a bike ride with presumably no breakdowns. This also applies to damage caused by transport between land and the boat or vice versa). Only electric bikes with removable batteries are accepted on board.
