Why choose Spain for your pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela?

Spain is home to the most iconic stretch of the Camino de Santiago, the Camino Francés, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This historic route crosses four distinct regions - Navarre, La Rioja, Castile and León and Galicia - each offering its own characteristic landscapes and rich culture.

Facilities are ideally suited to pilgrims, with an extensive network of albergues, or pilgrim hostels, and excellent waymarking.

The continental climate makes for pleasant walking from May to October, with particularly favourable conditions for walking in spring and autumn.

How do our self-guided holidays on the Camino de Santiago routes work?

Our self-guided walking holidays give you complete independence and peace of mind. We book your accommodation for each stage, arrange luggage transfers from one stop to the next, and provide a detailed route guide with maps and practical advice. You walk light with your daypack, while your belongings await you at your accommodation each evening. Our telephone assistance is available throughout your journey to answer your questions or deal with anything unexpected.

An approach that respects everyone’s pace

Unlike group holidays, this option allows you to adapt each day to your preferences and fitness level. You can take longer breaks in the villages along the way, visit monuments that interest you or simply enjoy a coffee in a Castilian square while watching local life unfold. This freedom preserves the authenticity of the pilgrimage experience while taking care of the logistics for you.

The key stages of the Camino Francés in Spain

Our route is divided into four sections, allowing you to gradually discover the diversity of the Spanish journey. The first stage, from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Logroño, takes you across the Navarrese Pyrenees before you discover Pamplona and the first vineyards of La Rioja. The stretch from Logroño to Burgos reveals the wine capital of Haro and the Castilian plains dotted with historic villages.

The section from Burgos to León crosses the mesetas, the high plateaus that form the soul of the Camino, with their endless horizons and ever-changing skies. Finally, the last stage from León to Santiago takes you through the mountains of León and then the lush valleys of Galicia, culminating in an emotional arrival before Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.

Practical tips for a successful Camino de Santiago journey

The ideal period runs from May to September, with May and September particularly recommended for their milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Walking holidays in May benefit from spring blooms, while September brings the gentle warmth of an Indian summer and the first autumn colours.

When choosing your section, consider your walking ability and the time you have available. Each stage involves 10 to 12 days of actual walking. Beginners can start with the León-Santiago section, which is shorter and offers more varied scenery. Experienced walkers will enjoy the entire route or choose to begin with the more physically demanding Pyrenean stage.

An experience suited to families

The Camino de Santiago can also be enjoyed as a family on certain suitable stretches. Our family holidays on the Camino de Santiago routes focus on shorter stages and comfortable accommodation. The Galician section, from Sarria to Santiago, is an excellent choice for a first family experience: its final 100 kilometres qualify walkers for the Compostela certificate, and its green landscapes are more welcoming for young walkers.
