Your trip begins at Faro Airport. Transfer (included) from the airport to your first accommodation in Sagres. This village holds immense significance in world history, reflected in its wealth of historical events, stories and legends. The ruins of the 16th-century Baleeira Fort, the magnificent fortress and Mareta Beach are among the village’s highlights to explore.
Overnight in Sagres.
As a specialist in cycling in Portugal, Grand Angle offers a route along the southern coast, discovering the treasures of the Algarve. You will follow the Ecovia, a cycle route covering 214km that takes you from Cape St Vincent, Europe’s south-western tip, to the Spanish border, through a succession of coastal landscapes and traditional fishing villages.
This cycling holiday, travelling from place to place, is designed to immerse you fully in the region’s diversity. The route alternates between the ochre cliffs and beaches of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park and the protected lagoons of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, an important stopover for many migratory birds. Each stage takes you to towns with a rich maritime past, such as Sagres, Lagos and Tavira, whose architecture reflects the golden age of Portuguese exploration.
By choosing one of our self-guided holidays in Portugal, you can explore the delights of the Algarve by bike at your own pace. We take care of the logistics, including selecting comfortable accommodation, so you can make the most of each day and immerse yourself in Portuguese culture.
Itinerary

Program
Start your day at the Cape St Vincent lighthouse, Portugal’s south-westernmost point, with spectacular ocean views and cliffs 75metres high. Hop on your bike and follow quiet roads through Vila do Bispo, with its 18th-century church, and Raposeira, with its 16th-century church. Enjoy a break in a traditional café.
Cycle along small back roads towards the coast, passing through landscapes of green fields, gentle hills and pine trees. In the fishing village of Salema, take a swim and observe local fishing methods. Then explore Boca do Rio, a site with Portuguese-Roman ruins and an idyllic beach surrounded by hills.
Continue to Burgau, nicknamed the “Portuguese Santorini”, and visit Praia da Luz, where you can discover the Church of Luz de Lagos, the ruins of the Roman baths and enjoy a swim. Follow the cycle path along the sea and cliffs to Ponta da Piedade, a magnificent natural landmark. Finish your day by following the Bensafrim stream into the centre of Lagos.
Overnight at a hotel in Lagos
Start the day in Lagos, an important town and a departure point for the great Portuguese voyages of exploration. Visit Santa Maria Church, Santo António Church, Bandeira Fort and the municipal market.
Follow a cycle path and quiet tracks to Meia Praia for a swim.
The route then crosses an aquaculture area, where you can watch clams and cockles being harvested at low tide, before passing through Odiáxere and its 16th-century parish church. Towards Alvor, follow a busy road dotted with stork nests. Once there, discover the Morabito de São Pedro, the market and the traditional narrow streets, and enjoy fresh fish at a traditional restaurant.
Cross the Alvor estuary, known for its scenic views, then follow the coast along Praia do Vau and its cliffs to Praia da Rocha, an ideal place to relax at the end of the day.
Overnight at a hotel in Portimão
Follow the River Arade along the cycle path before visiting Portimão Museum, which tells the story of the town’s maritime past. Then continue to Ferragudo, an authentic fishing village, and its church, which offers a lovely view of the mouth of the Arade and Portimão.
The route continues along minor roads through vegetation typical of the Algarve. In Carvoeiro, discover the fort and the spectacular rock formations of Algar Seco. Stop at the Senhora da Rocha headland, a historic site overlooking the ocean and home to a 16th-century chapel.
As you pass through Armação de Pêra, enjoy its renowned beaches before continuing past Salgados Lagoon, an ideal spot for birdwatching. Arrive in Albufeira to explore its narrow streets and tucked-away viewpoints, and savour the local seafood cuisine.
Overnight at a hotel in Albufeira
This day’s cycling combines coastal scenery and nature. Leaving Albufeira, you pass through Olhos de Água, a small fishing village known for its freshwater spring emerging from the sand. The route continues along minor roads through Mediterranean vegetation, including pines, olive trees, cork oaks, palms and carob trees.
Follow several of the Algarve’s iconic beaches—Falésia, Vilamoura, Quarteira, Garrão and Ancão—before discovering Vilamoura’s marina and the remains of a Roman villa. In Quarteira, pass the fish market and the pine woods near Foz do Almargem Lagoon.
The boardwalks of Quinta do Lago then offer superb views of Ria Formosa Natural Park, one of Portugal’s natural gems and a great place to spot birds, including flamingos. After passing through Praia de Faro, a fishing village that has preserved its traditions, you reach Faro’s marina along peaceful paths beside the natural park.
Overnight at a hotel in Faro
You begin the day by exploring Faro, the capital of the Algarve, with its old town enclosed by Moorish walls, its iconic arch and its cathedral. The route then alternates between roads and trails alongside the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the salt pans, offering superb views of the islands of Deserta, Farol, Culatra and Armona.
In Olhão, a town with deep fishing roots, visit the Mercado Municipal and the marina, then pass along the fishing harbour to soak up the local atmosphere. You continue towards Tavira along quiet roads lined with olive trees, pines, fig trees and cacti.
In Fuseta, discover the whitewashed houses and coastal scenery before crossing the salt pans, a haven for many bird species. Pass through Santa Luzia and stop at Barril Beach to admire the famous Anchor Cemetery, a reminder of the area’s tuna fishing heritage. The stage ends in Tavira with a crossing of its iconic Roman bridge.
Overnight at a hotel in Tavira
Begin the day in Tavira, one of the Algarve’s most beautiful towns, known for its castle, the Church of Misericórdia and the Camera Obscura. From the Roman bridge, the route takes you towards Cabanas de Tavira alongside the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a vast lagoon system covering 60km, mainly along quiet minor roads and trails. In Cacela Velha, immerse yourself in Islamic culture by visiting its medieval parish church and the fortress, which offers fantastic views of the coast. The coastal ride offers refreshing breaks on the beaches of Manta Rota, Altura, Praia Verde, Cabeço, Monte Gordo and Santo António. Cross the pine woods near Monte Gordo and the Vila Real de Santo António Dunes National Forest to reach the River Guadiana, a natural border. Follow the Guadiana to Vila Real de Santo António and explore Marquês de Pombal Square, the parish and the regional market. You can return to Tavira by train or by bike. The route towards Castro Marim, with its cycle paths and the Santo António Ravelin, offers exceptional views. Visit the parish church and castle to discover their fascinating history. The return journey follows minor roads through villages, farmland and vineyards, with views of the ocean, bringing this stage to a close along the east bank of the River Gilão into Tavira town centre.
Overnight at a hotel in Tavira.
Your stay ends after breakfast. Optional transfer to Faro Airport.

A number of our trips offer opportunities for swimming, either during a day’s route or at the end of the day. It would be a shame not to make the most of them. However, we stress that you alone must decide whether it is appropriate to swim; any swimming is therefore undertaken under your own responsibility and at your own risk.
For current information about our responsible-travel commitments, see our story.
For cycling

Please note: technical clothing made from synthetic fabrics performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting sweat odours (brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.)!
As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you cold when wet.
Protection from sun and rain
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- A hat, cap or bucket hat (helmet)
- A windproof jacket
- A rain cape or a Gore-Tex jacket
After exercise
- A jumper or fleece
- Comfortable trousers for walking

If you have a luggage rack, you can secure your bag to it with bungee cords. Rental bikes come with a pannier for your belongings. Bring a small backpack as well; this makes it easy to carry your belongings when you stop to visit somewhere along the way
- A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack or travel bag in good condition

The Algarve is an appealing region all year round. Its temperate Mediterranean climate, with low annual rainfall and endless hours of sunshine, makes it a welcoming destination at any time of year and an ideal refuge from the harsh winters of northern Europe. This wonderful climate, long stretches of fabulous beaches and varied activities draw visitors to its coast in every season. Winter temperatures like those in the Algarve are hard to find elsewhere in Europe. Spring brings almond blossom and lovely temperatures (with highs of 23°C and lows of 15°C). The heat increases during the summer months, with average highs of 31°C and lows of 18°C. Autumn brings more days with pleasant temperatures, with average highs of 20°C and lows of 15°C.

— Score of 8 by modifying the itinerary ourselves; outside the itinerary, Megasport's organization was top-notch.

— Our opinion of this trip is very positive, but we think it could be improved with even safer routes and simpler hotels.

— We found what we were looking for: a sporty trip, adapted to the winter period (around 15-18°C, often with sun), in tandem, and with a good level of comfort thanks to the luggage portage and the quality of the hotels. The GPS track is at a good level for spending time on the bike while still leaving time to enjoy the ride. However, there is some gradient, so it's best to have some experience to enjoy the ride on an unassisted bike. The Aglarve coast is beautiful, but often very (too) built-up, so I think you should stay out of season to avoid over-tourism.

— Well-balanced route, magnificent landscapes, very wild in places, a beautiful journey.
