A magnificent holiday among the legendary Dolomites in the heart of the mountains of Italy, surrounded by pristine snow, waiting for you to discover it!

Program

Dobbiaco (Toblach in German) and Villabassa (Niederdorf) are two historic villages in South Tyrol, with attractive houses reminiscent of Austrian villages clustered around their onion-domed church towers. The upper Pustertal valley lies at the junction of valleys leading south to Cortina d’Ampezzo, east towards the Lienz valley in Austria, west towards Brunico and north towards the San Silvestro and Santa Maddalena valley.

AccommodationOvernight in a hotel in Dobbiaco or Villabassa

You begin your holiday in the beautiful Pustertal valley, heading south-east to Sexten via San Candido, a village near Dobbiaco. The setting is magnificent, with views of the Lienz Dolomites and the Sexten Dolomites.

We also suggest a more challenging route via Sillian in Austria. A wonderful day surrounded by the majestic Dolomites.

AccommodationOvernight in a hotel in Sexten
Distance15 to 45km

You ski in the Fischleintal valley. The trail is one of the most beautiful in the Dolomites, with panoramic views to enjoy.
Enjoy a hot cappuccino and delicious South Tyrolean specialities at the Talschlusshütte.

AccommodationOvernight in a hotel in Sexten
Distance10 to 20km

From Sexten / Sesto, you glide through spruce forests to San Candido / Innichen, the cultural centre of the Hochpustertal. Through the Haunold / Baranci ski area, the trails take you west, beyond the Pustertal valley. You then continue to Niederdorf / Villabassa. Leaving the Pustertal, you enter the Prags / Braies valley. Once again, you can choose the more challenging route and go around Lake Prags / Braies before taking the shuttle bus to the Plätzwiese / Prato Piazza plateau.

AccommodationOvernight in a hotel in Prato Piazza
Distance25 to 45km

Set off to explore the extraordinary Prato Piazza plateau, as far as the foot of Croda Rossa. For those who wish: a snowshoe walk up Monte Specie for a spectacular view of the Tre Cime.

AccommodationOvernight stay at a hotel in Prato Piazza
Distance6 km

A transfer takes you from Prato Piazza to Monguelfo/Val Casies. You ski through wide-open spaces, admire the valley’s beautiful winter scenery and pass picturesque farms. Depending on your preferences, you can ski to Monguelfo and then continue towards Villabassa/Dobbiaco. Alternatively, you can take the bus to your hotel.

AccommodationOvernight stay at a hotel in Villabassa/Dobbiaco
Distance10 to 40km

From the Dobbiaco valley, you ski along a former railway line to the Hühlensteintal valley (Valle di Landro). A little further on, you enjoy panoramic views of the Tre Cime before reaching the Cortina area. You can return by bus.

AccommodationOvernight stay at a hotel
Distance10 to 35km

Your trip ends after breakfast or a final outing.

We may occasionally need to change the itinerary shown, either for logistical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in ground conditions, rockfalls, damaged trails, etc.) or because of weather conditions. These changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

Snow conditions

Snow cover in mid-altitude mountains can sometimes be unpredictable. As these trips are primarily about exploring on foot, departures will still go ahead if there is insufficient snow on some sections of the route. Remember to bring walking shoes.

Cross-country skiing clothing

  • Cross-country skiing clothing (a ski suit or leggings, tracksuit bottoms, etc.)
  • Overtrousers and a Goretex or Micropore-style jacket (important for protection against the wind)
  • A good pair of mittens
  • 1 pair of cross-country skiing gloves
  • A warm hat
  • A wool jumper or fleece
  • Warm base layers (one-piece suits, leggings), such as a LIFA or ODLO-style full-body acrylic base layer. AVOID COTTON (it retains moisture and makes you cold)
  • 3 pairs of good socks suitable for cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing equipment

  • A pair of classic cross-country skis with fish scales or waxable bases, or a pair of skate skis

Or

  • A pair of metal poles for classic or skate skiing
  • Cross-country ski boots for classic or skate skiing

For your picnic lunch

  • A one-litre water bottle or thermos flask (optional)

Sun protection

  • Sunglasses (4)
  • Sunscreen and lip protection

After skiing

  • A pair of shoes with good soles for going out and walking in the snow
  • A change of clothes
  • A toiletry bag
  • A small first-aid kit: personal medication, Elastoplast, Biogaze or “2nd skin”, gauze, disinfectant, arnica granules and aspirin for minor aches and injuries… (quite a list, but rest assured that the kit often comes home untouched after your week of skiing)
  • A camera with a protective cover against the cold
  • A swimsuit for the swimming pools and sauna.

For carrying your belongings

  • A comfortable small backpack with a capacity of 20 to 25 litres and a hip belt, for carrying your personal belongings and picnic during the day
  • A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, travel bag or suitcase in good condition

Italy

Travellers, including minors, must carry a national identity card or passport (EU nationals).

Bring your European Health Insurance Card, which you should request from your health insurance provider at least 15 days before departure. Health conditions are similar to those in France.

A varied itinerary (with a special highlight in the Dolomites); the scenery is magnificent and the accommodations are top-notch. Be aware, though, that there’s quite a bit of travel time involved...

We’re really happy with our trip :) Traveling on foot has a special charm—making your way from one place to another—and this trip lends itself particularly well to that. We did it in gorgeous weather under a blazing sun, without having to carry our luggage. The diversity of the landscapes (countryside, mountains, cities), the historic monuments, the magnificent natural sites, the scenic trails, and the quality of the accommodations—along with their hearty breakfasts—made these 12 days fly by! Some days of hiking are intense, but always in such beautiful places that you forget about the elevation gain! In the Dolomites, which are (very) popular, we were pleasantly surprised to find some trails completely empty; by venturing off the beaten path, we were able to admire the unspoiled surroundings. Everything was well organized (GPS app, lodging reservations…), and all the transfers went smoothly. Oops, a slight deviation from the trip’s title—we ended our trek in Verona, not Venice :)

A wonderful trip with breathtaking views, long and challenging hikes, and an exceptional guide, Barbara, who kept our great group together—everything was well-organized, with great meals, insightful explanations of the sites, and interesting stories. She was always smiling and funny! A must-do!
