Welcome at the hotel in Kufstein on Sunday at around 17:30 (499m). Settle in for a one-night stay. Your guide introduces the trip, followed by dinner. Situated in the alluvial valley of the Inn, near the Bavarian border, the town is surrounded by mountains such as the Pendling and the Kaisergebirge, as well as five hills. On one of these, the Festungsberg, stand a medieval fortress and its church, built in classic Baroque style.
Trek from Kufstein to the Emperor Mountains
Between the limestone cliffs of the Kaisergebirge and the lush green Alpine pastures of Tyrol, this trek in Austrian Tyrol takes you into the heart of an authentic Alpine landscape. Starting in Kufstein and passing through the valleys of the Wilder Kaiser and Zahmer Kaiser, this 6-day guided hike follows the contours of these iconic mountains without any major difficulties, offering views of rocky ridges and traditional mountain villages at every stage.
As specialists in trekking in Austria, we have selected the best-maintained and most varied trails in the range for this trip. You follow well-marked paths, passing traditional mountain huts such as Vorderkaiserfeldenhütte and Stripsenjochhaus, perched on the edge of flower-filled Alpine pastures. Nights in hotels or mountain inns, generous meals inspired by Tyrol’s hearty cuisine, and the comfort of spacious rooms ensure an ideal balance between adventure and relaxation.
A guided group trek to explore one of the most beautiful regions of the Austrian Alps on foot, in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Itinerary

Program
A very varied stage that gives you a feel for the mountain range and its magnificent landscapes. A gradual climb above Kufstein is followed by a short descent to cross a wild limestone gorge. Pass the prehistoric Tischofer Höhle cave.
Then a lovely zigzagging climb through beech forest opens up partial views of the limestone mountains of the Wilder Kaiser. Head towards the Rietzalm hut beside the first Alpine pastures. Pass the traditional Vorderkaiserfeldenhütte mountain hut and inn, perched at 1389m at the foot of the Petersköpfl (1745m). This is the highest point of the day and a chance to take a break on the panoramic terrace. We continue along the Ebbser Steig, a narrow Alpine trail that zigzags down towards the Gamsschaukopf, then follows a hillside trail between forests and Alpine pastures to Aschinger Alm (967m), where the Walchsee valley comes into view. Descend into the broad valley to reach our hotel.
A beautiful mountain stage, taking us from alpine pastures to the cliffs of Kaiser Winckl and into the very heart of the Kaisergebirge massif. The day begins gently through alpine pastures and forests overlooking Lake Walchsee before entering the wild Weissenbach valley, which we follow uphill to the Feldalmsattel pass and then the Stripsenjoch pass. A little further on, we discover the extraordinary Stripsenjochhaus mountain hut (built in 1901-1902, it is one of the oldest Alpine Club huts in the Northern Alps), perched like a sentinel on the Stripsenjoch pass, facing some of the most impressive cliffs in the entire Alps. This is the central point of the Wilder Kaiser and the gateway to the Kaiserbachtal nature reserve.
Covering an area of 10200 hectares, this reserve is home to unique flora and fauna. A final descent takes us to our mountain inn, set at 1024m at the bottom of the Kaisertalbach valley. A final descent (around 1 hour 20 minutes) takes us to our welcoming mountain inn, set at 860m in the Kaisertalbach valley.
We leave the Griesner Alm inn to climb Feldberg, 1813m, along a superb trail. This is the highest point of the day, with breathtaking views. Our trail then follows the ridge towards Scheibenbühelberg (1613m) and the alpine pasture of Scheibenbühelalm (1280m) before dropping down to the small hamlet of Griesenau, nestled at the bottom of the valley, right at the entrance to the Kaiserbachtal nature reserve.
A short transfer by scheduled bus (5 minutes) takes us to the charming little hamlet of Gasteig (in the municipality of Kirchdorf), set at an altitude of 746m in a broad meadow at the foot of the mountain, in a landscape dotted with pretty farmhouses and flower-filled alpine pastures.
A spectacular stage on the southern slopes of the Wilder Kaiser, high above the beautiful Ellmau valley. We leave civilisation behind at the small Hackeralm alpine chalet (1097m) and join the well-marked Adlerweg (Eagle Walk), which climbs into the wild, rocky landscape of cirques and scree slopes, home to chamois. We pass the small Ackerlhütte mountain hut, perched at the foot of the rock walls on the south face of the Ackerlspitze, 2329m. We continue past Baumgartenkopfl (a magnificent viewpoint overlooking the valley), then Gaudeamushütte, where we leave the Adlerweg to descend into the Hausbach valley. We pass Wochenbrunneralm, 1085m. We then descend by taxi minibus to the village of Ellmau, nestled on the valley floor.
A short transfer to Hintersteiner See via Scheffau, the smallest village in the Wilder Kaiser. The day begins with a climb from the idyllic Hintersteiner See, nestled in an exceptional setting, to the alpine hamlet of Walleralm, perched at 1170m, where the small chalets invite us to take a break. We continue over the small pass and the summit of Hochweg at 1470m, before heading down to the alpine hamlet and Kaindlhütte mountain hut. We then descend to cross a gorge before a short climb to the Bretenjoch chairlift. We take the chairlift down the first section, then finish on foot along a spectacular trail beside an impressive gorge (with excellent safety barriers), all the way to Kufstein.
We may need to change the itinerary shown, either for logistical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, splitting groups, changes in terrain conditions, rockfalls, damaged trails, etc.) or at the guide’s discretion (weather, the group’s ability, etc.). These changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

Carrying your belongings
- A comfortable 30 to 50 L backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day
- A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, a travel bag in good condition, or a suitcase that is not too bulky. One bag per person, with a 15 kg weight limit
Find out how to pack your hiking backpack in our magazine.
For hiking
For maximum comfort, choose a layered clothing system: warm base layers (leggings and a top) such as “Carline” or “Capilene” (hollow fibres that wick away perspiration), plus a fleece jumper or jacket, plus a mountain jacket and overtrousers with a waterproof, breathable membrane (such as Gore-Tex or equivalent) for bad weather. In general, except in hot climates and countries, avoid cotton, which traps moisture close to the body and dries slowly, and opt for suitable synthetic fabrics instead.
- Hiking boots with ankle support, a sturdy heel counter, a well-treaded sole and good waterproofing
- Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
- A fleece
- Comfortable walking trousers made from quick-drying technical fabric
- Comfortable shorts made from technical fabric
- T-shirts or technical base layers made from quick-drying fabric
- A long-sleeved shirt
- Walking poles (telescopic), which are very important for making walking easier. Discover all the benefits of hiking poles in our dedicated article, or how to choose your hiking poles
Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the added benefit of resisting odours from perspiration!
For your picnic lunch
- Your eating kit: a plastic bowl, container or plate, and cutlery (spoon, fork and knife)
- 1 or 2 water bottles (a total capacity of at least 1,5 L) – essential –; an insulated flask for winter
Protection from sun and rain
- Sunscreen (high protection)
- Sunglasses
- A hat, cap or bucket hat
- A rain poncho or a waterproof jacket such as a softshell or Gore-Tex jacket, and optionally waterproof trousers
After your hike
- A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
- Spare clothes and underwear
- Toiletry bag and a small towel
- Swimwear and a towel for wellness facilities (if specified) or swimming
- A small first-aid kit: personal medication, surgical masks, hand sanitiser, plasters, sterile dressings and a bandage, gauze, disinfectant, arnica granules and aspirin, etc. (Please note that this list is not exhaustive and should be adapted to your own medical needs.)
Find these tips in our article “What to take with you on a hike”.
This list is for guidance only and should be adapted to your trip and the season in which you are travelling.

A valid French, Belgian or Swiss identity card or passport. Canadians must bring their passport but do not need a visa. Since 2012, children have been required to have their own identity card or passport.
Health
Apply for a European Health Insurance Card at your social security office (or through its website), which will send it to you within about two weeks. This is a blue plastic card in the same format as the French Carte Vitale health insurance card. It is valid for one year, free of charge and personal (each family member must have their own, including children). This card confirms your entitlement to health insurance and allows you to receive cover for medically necessary care during a temporary stay in Europe, regardless of the reason for your trip, provided you follow the procedures in force in the country you are visiting. Please note that the card is not valid for care provided in private facilities.
Austria is a country with several different climatic influences: a continental climate in the north, and an alpine climate in the high mountain ranges of the west, with very large temperature variations and heavy snowfall. The east, which borders the Hungarian plain, is characterised by a short spring and a dry, pleasant autumn. In Vienna, temperatures can exceed 35 °C during a heatwave.
The euro
The best option is to withdraw cash from ATMs using an international payment card as you need it. ATMs are widely available. For Swiss and Canadian travellers, currency exchange offices can be found at airports, border crossings and railway stations in major cities. As a rule, there is no longer a commission for withdrawing euros from ATMs if your account is in the eurozone; check with your bank if this is not the case.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by Elisabeth in AugustA truly wonderful week in the stunning landscapes of the Austrian Tyrol. The trails were magnificent and, thankfully, shaded by the majestic forests, which allowed us to hike despite the exceptionally high temperatures (29–35°C). It was a perfect week, thanks in large part to the professionalism of Guillaume, our amazing guide, and the super-friendly group. The accommodations were top-notch. This was my first experience with Grand Angle, and it’s made me want to do it again.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by ANNE in AugustA wonderful stay
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by Laurent in AugustA well-balanced trip combining cultural visits with the exploration of a wide variety of natural landscapes in Bavaria, Tyrol, and the Dolomites. The mix of accommodations—from hotels to mountain huts—allows you to both recharge in the valleys and enjoy the experience of spending the night at high altitudes. This trip is designed for travelers who are already familiar with mountain hiking trips.
