Meet at the hotel in Kufstein (499m) in the late afternoon.
Set in the alluvial valley of the River Inn, near the Bavarian border, the town is surrounded by mountains such as the Pendling and the Kaisergebirge, as well as five hills. On one of these, the Festungsberg, stand a medieval fortress and its church, built in the finest Baroque tradition.
Overnight in a hotel or Gasthof inn in Kufstein; dinner at your own expense (on request, we can reserve a table for you at a restaurant a few minutes' walk from your hotel).
Tour of the Emperor’s Mountains in the Kaisergebirge
In the heart of Tyrol, between the Chiemgau Alps (Germany) to the north and the Kitzbühel Alps to the south, rise the limestone mountains of the Kaisergebirge, made up of 2 mountain groups, the Wilder Kaiser (2341m) and the Zahmer Kaiser (2002m), symbolising the crown of the Emperor of Austria. At their feet, the wild Kaisertal and Kaiserbachtal valleys meet at the spectacular Stripsenjoch pass, the central point of the range. This route takes you through Alpine landscapes on trails with no major difficulties, at moderate elevations where you can enjoy green pastures, forests, lakes and lively villages with painted houses, overlooked by the magnificent surrounding peaks.
This self-guided walking holiday is organised by Grand Angle, the agency specialising in treks in Austria. A guided version of this trek is also available; see the upcoming departures for the Trek from Kufstein to the Emperor’s Mountains.

Program
A very varied stage, giving you a chance to immerse yourself in the mountain range and its magnificent scenery. A gradual climb through the Kaisertal is broken up by a descent into the Kaiserbach gorge, followed by a climb to the Ritzau Alm inn, 1161m, with some lovely views of the Wilder Kaiser. We skirt the western flank of the Zahmer Kaiser, whose highest peak, Pyramidenspitze (2002m), towers above us throughout the day. We pass the small, traditional Vorderkaiserfeldenhütte mountain farm and inn, perched at 1389m at the foot of Petersköpfl (1745m). This is the highest point of the day and a chance to take a break on the terrace, which offers a magnificent panorama of Kufstein, the Inn Valley and the Bavarian Alps. We continue along the Ebbser Steig, a small trail with an alpine character that zigzags down towards Gamsschaukopf, then follows a balcony path through forests and alpine pastures to Aschinger Alm (967m), where the Walchsee valley comes into view. We descend into the broad valley to reach our hotel, where you settle in for 2 nights. Enjoy the hotel’s fitness and wellness facilities.
2/ An alternative route is available from Ritzau Alm, with a less challenging descent but the same overall length.
3/ An alternative route between Kufstein and Walchsee follows the valley: 4 to 4½ hours of walking, +550m, -300m.
Dinner and overnight stay at a 4* hotel in Walchsee, with fitness and wellness facilities.
A circular walk exploring the Chiemgau Alps, amid rounded hills and flower-filled meadows… Here, one alpine farm follows another, and the landscape is lush and green. A short break at the Wandberghütte inn before crossing the German border. We reach the charming little Ackeralm inn, then the Priener Hütte mountain hut (1411m). We then descend into a long valley through which the Baumgartenbach stream flows, with the option of a final break at the Riederalm “Jausenstation” snack stop before returning to Walchsee.
*You can shorten this day’s walk by staying on the Tyrolean side of the route, passing through the Burgeralm alpine farm and returning to Walchsee.
There is time to relax by the lake and in the village before taking the bus back to the hotel to enjoy its fitness and wellness facilities.
Dinner and overnight stay at a 4* hotel in Walchsee (the same accommodation as the previous night).
A beautiful mountain stage with a distinctly Alpine feel, taking you into the very heart of the Kaisergebirge massif. The day begins gently, crossing Alpine pastures and forests overlooking Lake Walchsee before entering the wild Weissenbach valley, which we follow uphill to the Feldalmsattel pass. One final climb takes us to a small pass and then to the extraordinary Stripsenjochhaus mountain hut (built in 1901-1902 , it is one of the oldest Alpine Club huts in the Northern Alps), perched like a sentinel on the Stripsenjoch ridge pass; this is the central point of the Wilder Kaiser and the gateway to the Kaiserbachtal nature conservation area.
A final descent (around 1 hour) brings us to our welcoming, recently renovated mountain inn, Griesner Alm.
Dinner and overnight stay at a charming mountain inn in the Kaisertalbach valley (Griesner Alm).
Depending on availability, we may need to book an overnight stay at alternative accommodation, such as Fischbachalm or Stripsenjochhaus.
We leave Griesner Alm inn to begin the climb up Feldberg, the highest point of the day, on a recently established trail that is superbly laid out but fairly demanding, with breathtaking views. Our trail then follows the ridge towards Scheibenbühelberg (1613m) and the Alpine pasture of Scheibenbühelalm (1280m) before descending steeply to the small hamlet of Griesenau, nestled on the valley floor right at the entrance to the Kaiserbachtal nature reserve.
A short journey by scheduled bus (at your own expense) takes you to the small village of Kirchdorf, set at an altitude of 650m in a broad meadow at the foot of the mountain, in a landscape dotted with pretty farms and flower-filled Alpine pastures (7km, 10 min).
There are 2 alternative routes to Griesenau:
1/ Directly via Obere Schibenbichalm, bypassing Feldberg, then by bus to Kirchdorf (7km, 10 min).
2/ Along the valley floor, following the Kaiserbachtal mountain stream, in 2 hours. If you choose this route, we recommend continuing on foot to Gasteig (1 hour 30 minutes of walking and +100m) or Kirchdorf (2 hours 30 minutes of walking and +100m, -150m).
Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel or Gasthof in Kirchdorf or Gasteig.
A stage passing through Hackeralm, 1097m, Niederalm, Granderalm, Ackerlhütte, 1455m, Baumgartenköpfl, 1572m, Gaudeamushütte, 1263m, Wochenbrunner Alm, 1080m, Ellmau, 820m.
1/ To Ellmau:
Take the bus to the hamlet of Gasteig (at your own expense: 3km). A long and spectacular stage along the southern slopes of the Wilder Kaiser, overlooking the beautiful Ellmau valley. Pass the small alpine pasture hut of Hackeralm (1097m) to reach the alpine pasture trail at Niederalm, which leads to the small Ackerlhütte mountain hut, clinging to the foot of the rock walls on the south face of the Ackerlspitze, 2329m. Continue via Baumgartenköpfl (a magnificent viewpoint over the valley), then descend to Gaudeamushütte and into the Hausbach valley. Pass Wochenbrunner Alm, 1085m, before reaching the small village of Ellmau, nestled on the valley floor (you can also reach Ellmau by taxi bus from Wochenbrunner Alm).
2/ To Scheffau: follow the same route as far as Gaudeamushütte. From there, you can reach the small village of Scheffau in 2 to 2½ hours on foot.
3/ You can also reach Scheffau by taking the taxi bus down to Ellmau, then continuing by taxi or bus to Scheffau.
Overnight in a hotel or Gasthof in Ellmau or Scheffau. Dinner at your own expense.
1/ The most direct route, via Scheffau, 745m, Hintersteiner See, 882m and Stofflhütte 1150m.
A short transfer to the idyllic Hintersteiner See lake (10 min by bus), nestled in an exceptional setting: the most beautiful and cleanest mountain lake in Tyrol, where the rocky peaks of the Kaiser mountains are reflected in the turquoise waters. Follow the “Seeweg”, a lakeside trail at the foot of the Achleitner Kögel, 1229m. One final climb takes you to the small Stofflhütte mountain inn, perched at 1150m, inviting you to take a break and enjoy a house beer or hot chocolate with a Kaiserschmarrn… then descend gently to Kufstein. The hike ends in Kufstein.
2/ Take the bus to Hintersteiner See, then continue via Stofflhütte and Hochegg, 1470m, to the Kaindlhütte mountain hut, where you can enjoy a pleasant break before continuing towards Kufstein. You can reach the town on foot above the beautiful Kufstein gorges, or take a chairlift to shorten the descent significantly.
The trip ends in Kufstein in the afternoon. Collect your luggage from the hotel in Kufstein. If you need to leave Kufstein early, please let us know and we will arrange for your luggage to be delivered accordingly.
We may occasionally need to change the itinerary shown, either for logistical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in terrain conditions, rockfalls, damaged trails, etc.) or because of the weather. These changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

As a member of the board of directors since 2018, we actively help the industry adopt more meaningful practices. In practical terms, we focus on:
- Transparency in our practices and pricing

- Protecting the environment on every trip
We also share the values of the Traveller’s Ethical Charter, which encourages everyone to take simple steps to protect the places they visit and make meaningful connections with the people they meet.

A number of our trips offer opportunities to swim, either along the day’s route or at the end of the day. It would be a shame to miss out. However, we stress that you alone must decide whether it is appropriate to swim; any swimming is therefore your own responsibility and undertaken at your own risk.

To carry your belongings
- A comfortable 30 to 50 L backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day
- Luggage for transfer: a backpack, a travel bag in good condition, or a suitcase that is not too bulky. One bag per person, limited to 15kg
Find out how to pack your hiking backpack in our magazine.
For hiking
For maximum comfort, choose a layered clothing system: warm base layers (leggings + top) such as “Carline” or “Capilene” (hollow fibres that wick away perspiration) + a sweatshirt or fleece jacket + a mountain jacket and overtrousers with a waterproof, breathable membrane (such as Gore-Tex or equivalent) for bad weather. In general, except in hot climates and countries, avoid cotton, which holds moisture close to the body (and takes a long time to dry), and choose suitable synthetic fabrics instead.
- Hiking boots with ankle support, a well-treaded sole, a supportive heel counter and good waterproofing
- Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
- A fleece
- Comfortable walking trousers (quick-drying technical fabric)
- Comfortable shorts in technical fabric
- T-shirts or technical base layers (quick-drying fabric)
- A long-sleeved shirt
- Walking poles (telescopic), which are very important for making walking easier. Discover all the benefits of hiking poles in our dedicated article, or how to choose your hiking poles
Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting perspiration odours!
For your picnic lunch
- Your eating kit: a plastic bowl, container or plate, and cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
- 1 or 2 water bottles (at least 1,5 L in total) – required –; an insulated flask for winter
Protection from sun and rain
- Sunscreen (high protection)
- Sunglasses
- A hat, cap or bucket hat
- A rain poncho or a waterproof jacket such as a softshell or Gore-Tex jacket, and possibly waterproof trousers
After your hike
- A pair of running shoes for the evening
- A change of clothes and underwear
- A toiletry bag and a small towel
- Swimwear and a towel for wellness facilities (where specified) or swimming
- A small first-aid kit: personal medication, surgical masks, hand sanitiser, plasters, sterile dressings and a bandage, gauze, disinfectant, arnica pellets, aspirin, etc. (Please note that this list is not exhaustive and should be adapted to your own medical needs.)
Find these tips in our article “What to take on a hike”.
This list is intended as a guide and should be adapted to your trip and the season in which you travel.

A valid French, Belgian or Swiss identity card or passport. Canadians must carry their passport but do not need a visa. Since 2012, children have been required to carry their own identity card or passport.
Obtain a European Health Insurance Card from your social security office (or visit its website), which will send it to you within about two weeks. It is a blue plastic card, the same size as the French Carte Vitale health insurance card. It is valid for one year, free of charge and issued individually (each family member must have their own, including children). This card confirms your entitlement to health insurance and allows you to receive coverage for medically necessary treatment during a temporary stay in Europe, regardless of the reason for your trip, provided you follow the procedures applicable in the country you are visiting. Please note that the card does not cover treatment provided in private facilities.
Austria experiences a variety of climatic influences: a continental climate in the north, and an alpine climate in the high mountain ranges of the west, with very large temperature variations and heavy snowfall. The east, which borders the Hungarian plain, is characterised by a short spring and a dry, pleasant autumn. In Vienna, temperatures can exceed 35 °C during a heatwave.

Currency exchange and payments
The best option is to withdraw cash from ATMs using an international payment card as you need it. ATMs are widely available. For Swiss and Canadian travellers, currency exchange offices can be found at airports, border crossings and railway stations in major cities. In principle, there are no longer any fees for euro withdrawals from ATMs if your account is in the eurozone; check with your bank if this is not the case.

— Overall, it was good. We had good meals at every place we stayed. Except for one, the accommodations (hostels, mountain huts, hotels) were very clean, and the people were very kind and welcoming. I think there was a bit too much driving; we prefer hiking trails.
Franck 9/26/26
— A beautiful route, although most of the hikes involve too much driving. Easy to follow using the app. The Austrians are very welcoming.

— The trip was very well organized. The only hiccup was that our luggage didn't arrive for two days in a row, and we were unable to contact Grand Angle or get a callback regarding this issue. We had to work it out with the locals.
