Lake Constance is a small paradise for cycle touring enthusiasts!

It is possible to do the tour of Lake Constance in 7 days or to step up the pace for a sport version in 3 days, 4 days or 5 days.

Grand Angle, the specialist agency for bicycle travel, offers you here a sport stay of 5 days with 3 days by bike to tour the lake.

This sport tour of Lake Constance invites you to discover the charm of a region located at the border of 3 countries: Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Along your route, you will discover the must-see Mainau flower island, Reichenau island and the city of Constance. The cycle path crosses orchards, vineyards and picturesque medieval towns such as Stein am Rhein, Meersburg or Schaffhausen. From the lakeside, the view over the Alpine peaks is breathtaking. The numerous thermal baths, beaches and leisure parks are ideal for a good balance between refreshment, relaxation and sport stages.

You will be riding one of Europe’s most beautiful circuits. Absolutely unmissable for lovers of bikes, nature and culture. You will traverse varied landscapes, cross three countries and discover the extraordinary historical heritage of the medieval towns of Constance, Stein am Rhein, Meersburg and Lindau as well as the city of Bregenz. The first stages are very gently rolling, you ride on beautiful cycle paths with only a few rare interruptions.

Program

The Celts were certainly the first to settle this place on the shores of the lake, but it was the Romans who left visible traces in Constance. Do not hesitate to visit this beautiful university town with its Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Council building built on stilts near the port and the cloister of the former Dominican abbey. You can also visit the beautiful Mainau island, the Sea Life Center aquarium or the city’s archaeological museum.

AccommodationNight in a hotel in Constance.

You begin your bicycle journey on the northern shore of the Untersee until you reach Radolfzell, a former imperial town and now thermal spa resort. You continue through magnificent landscapes along the Höri peninsula, where Otto Dix and Hermann Hesse once lived, to the charming town of Stein am Rhein in Switzerland with its houses decorated with frescoes. On the southern shore of the lake, you cross picturesque Swiss fishing villages to return to Constance.

Stein am Rhein

AccommodationNight in a hotel in Constance.
DistanceFrom 75 km to 85km by bike.

The ferry takes you from Constance to Meersburg. You then cycle through vineyards to the town of Friedrichshafen, where a visit to the Zeppelin Museum is worthwhile. Your journey continues through vast fruit orchards to Lindau, whose old town is entirely on the island of Obersee. You have only a few kilometres left before reaching Bregenz, renowned for its cultural and music festival in summer.

AccommodationNight in a hotel in Bregenz or Lindau.
DistanceApproximately 50 to 65 km by bike + boat.

First, you cycle through the Rhine Delta nature reserve. Classified as a wetland, it is an extremely rich ornithological site, with more than 340 bird species. At Altenrhein, you cross the Swiss border, and cycle most of the time directly along the lake through the small towns of Arbon and Romanshorn to Constance. This section is flat and easy to manage, except in strong westerly winds. You pass numerous swimming sites where you can refresh yourself.

AccommodationNight in a hotel in Constance.
DistanceApproximately 70 to 90 km by bike.

We may sometimes be required to modify the indicated itinerary: either at the organisational level (accommodation overbooking problem, change in terrain conditions, landslides, degraded trails, etc.), or weather conditions. These modifications are always made in your interest, for your safety and for greater comfort!

A number of our trips lend themselves to swimming, during a stage or at the end of the day. It would be a pity not to take advantage of this. However, we emphasize that your guides are not lifeguards; these swimming activities are therefore at your own responsibility and at your own risk.

For your bike

A short or long cycling shorts depending on the season

  • Cycling gloves
  • A helmet
  • Sunglasses (against sun, wind, midges)
  • A windbreaker
  • T-shirts or cycling jerseys
  • A map holder on the handlebars or a smartphone holder on the handlebars (and external battery)
  • A water bottle

NB: synthetic technical clothing is very effective. New merino wool clothing has also appeared; they are very effective and pleasant to wear, and have the advantage of not developing perspiration odors (Icebreaker, Ruka brands, etc…)! In general, avoid cotton, which cools when wet.

Against sun and rain

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Hat, cap or bucket hat (helmet)
  • A windbreaker
  • A rain cape or a “Goretex”
  • A sweater or fleece
  • Comfortable trousers for walking
  • Shorts
  • A tracksuit or spare clothing
  • A light cotton long-sleeved shirt
  • A pair of jogging-style sneakers for the evening
  • Spare clothing and personal laundry
  • Toiletry bag
  • A swimsuit
  • A small first aid kit: personal medications, adhesive plasters, bio gauze or “2nd skin”, gauze, disinfectant, arnica granules and aspirin for minor injuries …
  • If you don’t have a saddlebag on your bike, take a comfortable 40l backpack with a waist belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic during the day. If you have a bike rack, you can fix your bag on it using bungee cords. Rental bikes come with a saddlebag where you can put your belongings. Equip yourself with a small backpack anyway; this allows you to easily carry your belongings when you go sightseeing on the way.
  • Luggage to follow: a backpack, a suitcase or a travel bag in good condition

—  Very nice trip.top itinerary.resourceful documentation.hotels all close to cycle paths.

Philippe 6/23/26

—  The Lake Constance loop is accessible to all cyclists, even beginners: the terrain is very flat, with bike paths along the entire route and excellent signage. Exploring this region by bike allows you to stay off the main roads and discover the lake’s shores from a more “natural” perspective. The hotels offer excellent service, and the staff is attentive to guests’ needs. Luggage is transported without issue, but you must be on time—Swiss and German punctuality is no myth. The e-bikes we reserved were perfect. The bike rental company provided us with plenty of instruction, adjustments, and advice. The e-bike allows for long stages (80 km) without overexertion, so you won’t be exhausted at the end of the day. Their battery life is more than sufficient unless you use “sport” mode constantly; “eco” or “tour” mode is usually enough. If you don’t speak German, English is widely spoken by the locals, and you’ll always manage to make yourself understood. However, don’t expect explanations or signs in French, even at the Zeppelin Museum, which is internationally renowned. Lake Constance is a very popular destination for Germans, Swiss, and Austrians. In short: go there without hesitation—it’s well worth it.

Catherine 6/23/26

—  A really nice bike ride with beautiful weather; the bikes are too heavy and not suited for climbing hills—they're not mountain bikes.

Hello Catherine, thank you for your feedback!
Regarding the bikes, it’s true that the route includes a few hills and one section with a slightly steeper incline. We noted that one person in your group had opted for a standard bike (hybrid), which explains the difficulty they encountered.
This is a very unusual experience, as this route can be completed without any trouble on an electric-assist bike (e-bike)! Nevertheless, we’ll pass on your comment so we can better inform our future travelers about the level of effort required on a hybrid bike.
We look forward to seeing you again soon for a new adventure,
Best regards,
The Grand Angle Team

—  A first time for non-sportsmen, it was risky! But it all worked out lol! The route was very well explained, and the application was top-notch. The last day we tested the train at the end of the day, and everything was accessible to bikes! We only had 4 days vacation (family constraints) and couldn't do any sightseeing ... but the 7-day version should really allow it. We had no prior physical preparation, so of course we discovered some new muscles, but nothing serious! The Arbr hotel is really very, very good. In short, a great adventure !!!! 💜
