As specialists in cycle touring in Europe, we at Grand Angle offer you a week-long self-guided cycling holiday around Lake Constance. This 260-kilometre route crosses three countries, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, with gentle riding on well-maintained cycle paths and daily stages of 35 to 60 kilometres.
Seven days to discover the history and authentic character of this region. You will cycle through medieval towns such as Stein am Rhein, Lindau and Meersburg, ride alongside the terraced vineyards of the Bodensee and enjoy frequent views of the Alps. Each stop reveals treasures: Baroque churches, picturesque harbours and nature reserves where more than 340 bird species nest at the confluence of the Rhine.
Our comfortable holiday package puts accessibility at the heart of your stay: luggage transfers between each overnight stop, accommodation in selected 3- and 4-star hotels, and a gradually increasing level of difficulty (level 2). You enjoy the freedom to cycle at your own pace, without the constraints of a group, while benefiting from a fully planned itinerary.
Whether you love nature, enjoy exploring local heritage or are looking for an active holiday to share as a couple or with friends, this route around Lake Constance combines peaceful lakeside scenery with cultural riches.

Program
Although the Celts were the first to settle here on the shores of the lake, it was the Romans who left traces in Konstanz that are still visible today. Take the time to explore this beautiful university town, with its Cathedral of Our Lady, the Council Building built on stilts near the harbour and the cloister of the former Dominican abbey. You can also visit the beautiful island of Mainau.
Mainau, the island of flowers
AccommodationOvernight in a hotel in Konstanz
On the southern shore of the Untersee, you will cycle alongside the lake through picturesque Swiss fishing villages to Stein am Rhein and its medieval houses. From there, Gailingen is not far away.
Stein am Rhein, the market square
AccommodationOvernight in a hotel in Gailingen, Stein am Rhein, Wangen or Hemmenhofen (depending on accommodation availability and the hotel category selected)
Distance35 to 50 km by bike
Today, you will cycle around the Höri peninsula, where Otto Dix and Hermann Hesse once lived. You will stop in Radolfzell, a former imperial town and now a spa town. You will then cross the Bodanrück, with a very short climb along the way. On reaching Lake Überlingen, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the Swabian Sea.
Höri
AccommodationOvernight in a hotel in Ludwigshafen or Überlingen (depending on accommodation availability and the category selected)
Distance40 to 60 km by bike
You cycle through the vineyards to Friedrichshafen. Along the way, you pass the Baroque pilgrimage church of Birnau. In Meersburg, you should visit the beautiful old town and the old castle. A visit to the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen is worthwhile. Your journey continues to Kressbronn or the island town of Lindau.
Lindau
AccommodationOvernight stay at a hotel in Lindau, Kressbronn or Nonnenhorn (subject to accommodation availability)
Distance45 to 60 km by bike
This morning, shortly after setting off, you arrive in the Bavarian town of Lindau, whose old town lies entirely on an island in the Obersee, if you did not stay there the previous night. You can admire its 15th-century town hall, churches and medieval towers. The town has a harbour and a lighthouse offering panoramic views of Austria and the Swiss Alps. A few turns of the pedals bring you to Austria and Bregenz, the town of festivals. You then cross the Rhine, which flows down from the Swiss Alps; its delta is a nature reserve designated as a wetland and is an exceptionally rich birdwatching site, with more than 340 bird species. You soon cross back into Switzerland and follow the lakeshore to the old port of Rorschach, unless you are staying overnight around Höchst, near the delta and at a slightly higher elevation, offering superb views of the lake, or in Arbon.
Arbon
AccommodationOvernight stay at a hotel in Höchst, Horn, Rorschach or Arbon (subject to accommodation availability and your chosen hotel category)
Distance30 to 55 km by bike
The final stage takes you through Romanshorn, the lake’s largest port, and the canton of Thurgau, with its 1001 apple trees and magnificent viewpoints! Passing through immaculate little villages along the lakeshore, you reach Konstanz. Take a detour to the island of Mainau if you did not visit it at the start of your trip.
Konstanz Cathedral
AccommodationOvernight stay in Konstanz
Distance30 to 50 km by bike
Your trip ends after breakfast, or you can stay an extra night.
Konstanz, the Imperia statue at the harbour entrance
We may occasionally need to change the itinerary shown, either for logistical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in ground conditions, rockfalls, damaged paths, etc.) or because of weather conditions. These changes are always made in your interests, for your safety and greater comfort!
You can choose to start your cycling trip in any of the towns mentioned above (not necessarily Konstanz), at no extra charge.

Technical and practical information
Easy: 35 to 60km (or more in some flat destinations) of cycling each day, with almost no elevation gain. Mostly on cycle paths, greenways or quiet roads. Minimal elevation gain: a maximum of 100m per day. Suitable for children.
You only carry a small bag with your picnic and the things you need for the day. Your luggage will be waiting for you at the hotel in the evening: it is transported by the hotel staff or by taxi, with no limit on the number of bags per person (1 is recommended). Maximum weight of 20kg per bag.
Available for 2 people or more; solo travellers can book, but this incurs a supplement higher than the single room supplement.
7 days, 6 nights, 5 days of cycling.
Depart on the day of your choice.
We provide you with a digital travel pack that includes access to our smartphone navigation app, a list of your accommodation, any vouchers required and all the information you need for your trip to run smoothly. A paper pack containing your vouchers, luggage labels and the roadbook with maps of the itinerary can be provided at an additional cost. It will be handed to you at your first hotel. This is a self-guided trip, without a guide, so you will travel independently throughout your stay.
For the classic 7-day Lake Constance circuit (DEULV0015), you can choose between two hotel categories:
Superior category (A+): charming 4*-star hotels offering excellent comfort, some with a spa and swimming pool, in rooms for 2 people.
Charming hotels, superior category (A+)
Comfort category (A): 3- to 4*-star hotels offering a very good standard of comfort, some with wellness facilities and a swimming pool, in rooms for 2 people.
Standard category (B): 2- to 3*-star hotels offering a good standard of comfort, with en-suite toilets and showers, in rooms for 2 people. Accommodation is located in smaller towns around the lake (approximately 4-5km from the main towns).
Please note: accommodation photos are for illustrative purposes only. Accommodation may change. Depending on availability, we may book other hotels of an equivalent standard and level of comfort.
All rooms have private en-suite toilets and showers.
In categories A and A+, you will generally stay in the main towns along the lake. In category B, accommodation tends to be in smaller towns.
In Germany and Austria, double beds with a single large mattress are generally uncommon, as are rooms with 2 separate single beds. Usually, there is a single bed base with two 90cm mattresses, each with its own duvet. If you would like a twin room, please let us know when booking. We will do our best, subject to availability. Rooms for 3 or 4 people: these generally have an additional sofa bed; however, the rooms are usually spacious. A cot can be provided on request.
Breakfast is included. Lunches and dinners are not included. Half board is not available on this trip. You will easily find places to eat along the way. Please note! People in Germany, Switzerland and Austria often eat dinner early. Please keep restaurant serving times in mind.
Day 1 in the afternoon in Constance.

For cycling
Cycling shorts or tights, depending on the season
Cycling gloves
A helmet
Sunglasses (to protect against the sun, wind and small insects)
A windproof jacket
T-shirts or cycling jerseys
A handlebar mount and a power bank for your smartphone
A water bottle
Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting sweat odours (brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.)! As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you cold when wet.
Protection against sun and rain
Sunscreen and sunglasses
A hat, cap or bucket hat (helmet)
A windproof jacket
A rain cape or a “Gore-Tex” jacket
Clothing
A jumper or fleece
Comfortable trousers for walking
A pair of shorts
A tracksuit or a change of clothes
A lightweight, long-sleeved cotton shirt
A pair of running-style trainers for the evenings
Spare clothes and underwear
Toiletry bag
A swimsuit
A small first-aid kit: personal medication, adhesive bandages, medicated gauze or “second skin” (2), gauze, disinfectant, arnica granules and aspirin for minor aches and injuries …
If your bike does not have a pannier, bring a comfortable small 40-litre backpack with a waist belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic during the day. If you have a luggage rack, you can secure your bag to it with bungee cords. Rental bikes come with a pannier for your belongings. Bring a small backpack as well; this makes it easy to carry your belongings when you stop to visit somewhere along the way.
A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, suitcase or travel bag in good condition
Travellers, including minors, must carry a national identity card or passport (EU nationals).
Bring your European Health Insurance Card, which you should request from your health insurance provider at least 15 days before departure. Health conditions are similar to those in France.

— Great organization, perhaps a slight bug in the itinerary, or maybe I didn't quite understand how it worked.

— The trip could have had a score of 10 if there had been a decent Roadbook. The 7 mark is mainly due to Radweg and the choice of hotels.
We’re sorry that the roadbook we provided didn’t meet your expectations and that it made your trip more difficult. Your feedback is very valuable, and we’ve shared it with our local partner to improve the quality of the materials we provide. For your future trips, please don’t hesitate to call our emergency number: we’re available throughout your stay to assist you quickly and effectively. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We hope that, despite everything, you were able to enjoy some wonderful moments during your trip, and we’re always here to listen.
Best regards, The Grand Angle Team
