This bicycle tour in Germany takes you from Lübeck to Rügen along the Coasts of Pomerania.

The Baltic Sea has magnificent coasts, with white sandy beaches and stunning skies, charming and somewhat outdated seaside resorts, and magnificent cities bearing witness to the past wealth of the Hanseatic League.

Following the EuroVelo 10 from Lübeck, the capital, to Stralsund, a UNESCO World Heritage site, via Wismar and Rostock…, along coasts of cliffs and white sand, dotted with seaside resorts, crossing the Western Pomeranian Lagoon National Park, with the magical Fischland - Darss - Zingst peninsula, a haven of peace for migratory birds.

This beautiful discovery is complemented by a tour of the island of Rügen, Germany’s largest, whose chalk cliffs inspired Romantic painters. You will admire its peninsulas sculpted by the sea, its seaside resorts, and its white sandy beaches.

This journey along the EuroVelo 10 is a ‘must’ for Baltic Sea fans: from Lübeck to Stralsund, or from marzipan to Bismarck herring, if you prefer! More seriously, the beauty of the ancient Gothic cities of the Hanseatic League rivals the vibrant life of the seaside resorts, with architecture sometimes a touch outdated and charming; between each, the immensity of the coast and the eternal sea breeze.

Immerse yourself in the heart of the natural and cultural heritage of this region with this beautiful Arte documentary of the Baltic from the sky (from 36:35 for the section starting in Lübeck), or through our 2 richly illustrated blog articles: “Baltic Dream” or “EuroVelo 10, the German coasts of the Baltic by bicycle”

If you would like to discover the Baltic coast by bicycle but this itinerary does not suit you, we have other possible options: from Lübeck to Stralsund in 8 days, from Lübeck to Usedom (if you wish to extend) in 14 days or simply the islands of Rügen and Usedom in 8 days

Program

This Baltic Sea port, nicknamed the Queen of the Hanseatic League, was the capital of the Hanseatic League. It reached its peak around the 14th century.

The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, particularly for its red brick architecture. You will admire the superb patrician houses of the 15th and 16th centuries, the famous brick gate (Holstentor), the salt warehouses…

AccommodationNight in a hotel in Lübeck

The Baltic Sea trail really begins at Travemünde, the mouth of the Trave River at sea. You can take the train to Travemünde (train every hour; approximately 20 minutes journey, 20km, not included, to be paid on site) and start the stage from Travemünde (recommended).

At the mouth of the Trave River, take the ferry, which takes you across to the right bank, on the Priwall peninsula (not included, to be paid on site).

You cross the Klützer Winkel to the seaside resort of Boltenhagen and its 5km of sandy beach. Beyond the chalk cliffs, you follow the Wismar inlet to the Hanseatic city of Wismar, one of the most beautiful in the Land, a magnificent maritime fortress listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

AccommodationNight in a hotel in Wismar
Distance58 to 77 km

Take time to visit the old town of Wismar, which was relatively spared from the war. Do not hesitate to take an excursion to Poel island, connected to the mainland by a bridge. Your stage then takes you through the Kühlung massif (peaking at 130m!), offering a forested and rolling landscape, shaped by glaciation, with also beautiful panoramas to the Kühlungsborn resort, its beach and marina.

AccommodationNight in Rerik, Kühlungsborn, Bad Doberan or surroundings.
Distance32 to 61 km

Vast flat landscapes to Warnemünde, Rostock’s seaside resort, following the coast. The stage takes you through Heiligendamm, Germany’s oldest seaside resort, founded in 1793, and Bad Doberan, its cathedral and monastery.

Approximately 21 to 56km.

AccommodationNight in a hotel in Warnemünde or Rostock
Distance21 to 56 km

In Warnemünde, take a walk along the old river, lined with fishing boats and populated by seagulls. Sit on the Warnow and admire the pier.

You take the ferry (ticket included in the trip) to Hohe Düne, which takes you through sparse forest and moorland to Fischland. Following the towpath, always within reach of the beach, you reach your seaside resort on the Fischland / Darß peninsula. You can visit the amber museum in Ribnitz-Damgarten if you wish (not included, to be paid on site).

AccommodationNight in Graal-Müritz, Ribnitz-Damgarten or on the Fischland peninsula
Distance17 to 62 km + ferry

Superb stage on the Baltic Sea! Views of the Bodden, this immense lagoon between sea and land, enclosed in the peninsula, alternate with panoramas of the sea.

You cross the primeval forest of Darß to Prerow and its fine sandy beach, between sea and forest. Take a detour to the west beach, unforgettable with its romantic expanses sculpted by wind and waves. Continue south: here are the fascinating and wild landscapes of the Bodden, a refuge for seabirds. Western Pomerania National Park, which you traverse in part, houses the largest nesting site in Europe for cranes and greylag geese.

The Bodden: these are lagoons that separate the interior from the Baltic. They form inlets in which sea water mixes with fresh water.

AccommodationNight in Prerow, Barth or Zingst
Distance30 to 65 km

In the Middle Ages, Barth was the residence of the rulers of Rügen.

You leave the town along the Barth Bodden coast, or behind the dike to reach Strelasund, then Gross Mohrdorf, where you’ll learn all about grey cranes. A small detour via Barhöft and its tower to admire a circular view over the entire coast and sea. But here comes Stralsund, which you’ll recognize from afar with its three towers. Your route ends here.

This magnificent old town is renowned for its numerous monuments in northern German gothic brick style. It testifies to the opulence of the city in the Middle Ages; it is the archetype of the Hanseatic town that flourished during the golden age of this alliance of cities in the 14th century. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it deserves its reputation as one of the most beautiful towns in northern Europe. It indeed possesses superb architectural heritage, from the market square to the town hall, passing through the churches of Saint Mary and Saint Nicholas, as well as a maritime history worthy of the greatest ports!

AccommodationNight in a hotel in Stralsund
Distance42 to 57 km

You begin on the Rügen road, the Rügendamm which leads you directly to Rügen Island! After passing Strelasund, you continue to the west of the island heading north. You will then take the ferry to the Wittow peninsula (not included, to be paid on site).

AccommodationNight in Trent, Bohlendorf, Wiek, Breege, Juliusruth or surroundings
Distance45 to 60 km

If you feel ready to cycle 10km more, take a detour following the beautiful steep and wild coast to the majestic Cape Arkona. It is the northernmost point of Germany. Admire the panorama alternating cliffs, sandy or pebble beaches and blue expanse of the Baltic…and its two old lighthouses that seem to indicate the end of the world. Otherwise you leave Wittow following the strip of land, crossing the Langes Moor moorland to the north of Rügen. You will pass through the magnificent Jasmund National Park, its shaded forests, crossed by absolutely extraordinary light (regardless of the season), before giving way to breathtaking panoramas over the coves and the famous chalk cliffs. Continue to the king’s seat ‘Königstul’ the largest chalk cliff on the island, (118m high) before arriving at the small seaside resort of Sassnitz.

AccommodationNight in Sassnitz or surroundings
Distance45 to 62 km

From Sassnitz you head south, passing the “colossus of Rügen”, at Prora, an enormous building with oversized proportions, which extends over 5km built under the Nazi regime and later served as a training centre for the Red Army. It now houses several museums. You will pass through Binz, formerly a small fishing village that developed during the 19th century into a seaside resort favoured by the German bourgeoisie. Even today the faded charm of its villas and the beach promenade transport you back to the time of Theodor Fontane’s novels. You then arrive at Sellin, the prettiest and most sought-after seaside resort on this island, whose bourgeois villa architecture takes you back to the magic of the Belle Époque! The landscapes become wild again and take you to the Mönchgut peninsula (the monk’s land) before arriving westward at Putbus. It is the island’s first seaside resort, built in 1816 and residence of Prince Wilhelm Malte.

AccommodationNight in hotel at Putbus, Lauterbach or nearby
Distance45 to 69 km

Final stage of this trip on the EuroVelo 10 of the Baltic coast. A lovely short stage, partly hilly, to the Granitz hunting lodge, then your route continues along the Bodden, through small ports, towards the south of the island and Stralsund. You can shorten the stage by about twenty kilometres by taking, between Sellin and Putbus, the “Roland Express”, a steam train that travels across the island at 30km/h! (At your own expense).

AccommodationNight in hotel at Stralsund
Distance50 km

Suggestion: if you only have 8 days, we recommend the route from Lübeck to Stralsund, without crossing Rügen island.

You only carry a small bag with your picnic and items for the day. Your baggage is transported from hotel to hotel: 2 baggage per person possible (15kg max. per bag). We recommend you keep spare clothes in your panniers, as it may happen in rare and unforeseen cases, for example: delays, that your baggage is delivered late.

Accommodation

Category A: Hotel 3*+ and 4* or equivalent in double room
Category B: hotel or guesthouse 2* to 3* or equivalent in double room

Rooms

Our German and Danish neighbors generally do not know “double beds” (a single large mattress) and rarely have rooms with 2 twin beds. Generally, there is a single bed frame and two 90cm mattresses; each has their own individual duvet. Rooms for 3: this is generally an added bed; however, rooms are generally large.

More and more hotels refuse any classification, even establishments that were still classified a year or two ago. These establishments do not lose any quality, far from it. If we indicate, for example, a comfort level “3* or equivalent”: this means that the establishment is not necessarily classified, but has comfort corresponding to that of a 3* hotel.

Food and Dining

Breakfast included. Dinners and lunches are not included but you will have no problem finding places to eat on the road. Attention! Dinners are often early. Remember to respect service times.

The euro in Germany

Some legends from the Baltic islands…

Klaus Störtebeker (pronounced shteur-te-bay-ker): Nicknamed the red corsair, Klaus Störtebeker, whose name, which in Low German means “knock the tankard”, would merit a story all of its own, was a famous pirate from northern Germany who lived in the 14th century. The city of Hamburg reportedly tasked Simon Utrecht with capturing him, which he succeeded in doing despite the pirate’s attempts at bribery. According to the accounts, he was burned or beheaded in 1401. According to this latter version, he was promised that all the pirates in front of whom he could walk after being beheaded would be pardoned. 11 pirates would thus have had to be saved but the Mayor of Hamburg broke his promise. Legend also tells that his ghost would still haunt the shores of the Baltic Sea searching for his treasure which he is said to have buried in Rügen…

The Königsstuhl: From the sea, these are 118mmetre cliffs of crumbly rocks, battered by sea spray, almost smooth in places. It is said that whoever dared to climb the cliff and then sit on the stone forming a seat would become king of Rügen… (It is absolutely forbidden to attempt to climb the cliff, as it would prove to be fatal).

The woman of the watchstone: At the base of the Königsstuhl stands an enormous granite boulder, polished by erosion, called the watchstone. Every 7 years a magnificent young woman would appear at the first light of day on 24 June (Saint John). Whoever greeted her thus: “Guten Tag, Gott helfe” (“Good day, may God be with you”), would deliver her from a curse. To thank him, she would show him the location of a treasure. Less risky than climbing the Königsstuhl, this legend nevertheless requires working on your German pronunciation…
