De Berlin à Copenhague à vélo

This cycling holiday through Germany and the Netherlands takes you from Berlin to Copenhagen on EuroVelo 7.

From Berlin, you follow the canals and the banks of the Havel, passing through the beautiful landscapes of Mecklenburg, where canals, rivers, ponds and vast lakes intertwine, including Müritz, Germany’s largest lake. Then comes Denmark, the breakers off the island of Møn, heathlands and white sandy beaches leading you to the heart of Copenhagen.

Beyond the landscapes, this journey along EuroVelo 7 (also known as the Sun Route) introduces you to the cultural and trading history of Northern Europe: from Prussia to the Hanseatic cities, you discover a remarkable architectural, maritime, artistic and literary heritage.

Program

These places are easy to reach, even late in the evening. Make the most of your time if you arrive early!

You collect your bikes and travel information pack.

AccommodationOvernight in Oranienburg/Berlin-Spandau/Hohen-Neuendorf (or nearby)

Start your cycling journey from Berlin to Copenhagen on EuroVelo 7. Follow the Oder–Havel Canal to the pretty town of Liebenwalde, then continue along the Havel to Zehdenick. At the Mildenberg museum park, you can discover the region’s industrial history in what was once Europe’s largest brickmaking area.

AccommodationOvernight in Zehdenick, Fürstenberg or nearby
DistanceApproximately 35 to 75 km by bike

Your route takes you towards the Stechlin region, with its many lakes, peat bogs, springs… This is a region steeped in legends and immortalised in Fontane’s work. On arrival in Neustrelitz, admire the palace park, the star-shaped market square and the town centre, all bearing witness to the history of the Grand Duchy of Strelitz.

AccommodationOvernight in Neustrelitz or nearby.
DistanceApproximately 45 to 79 km by bike

Probably the most beautiful part of the tour, through the heart of Müritz National Park, the Land of a Thousand Lakes: a network of canals, rivers, peat bogs, ponds and lakes unlike any other in Europe, a true paradise for birdlife and a peaceful haven for common cranes. Müritz is Germany’s largest lake. Along the way, you pass through the small village of Ankershagen, where Schliemann was born, who discovered the remains of Troy and Mycenae in the late 19th century. Then cycle on to the spa town of Waren/Müritz. In the afternoon, visit the Müritzeum (included – the park’s nature discovery centre).

AccommodationOvernight in Waren (Müritz)
Distance65 km by bike

The route through Nossentiner Heide Nature Park takes you across vast forests to the lakeside town of Krakow am See. Established in 1994, this nature park covers 36.500 ha and offers 65% of mixed and coniferous forests, interspersed with lakes, peat bogs, wetland habitats, meadows and dunes. You eventually reach Güstrow, the town associated with the artist Barlach: visit the old town, which became the capital of the Dukes of Mecklenburg in the 14th century. It boasts a beautiful brick Gothic basilica and a Renaissance castle.

AccommodationOvernight in Güstrow or the surrounding area.
DistanceApproximately 69 km by bike

On this stage, you follow the Bützow–Güstrow Canal. Built between 1894 and 1896, the canal was used in particular to transport sugar beet from the countryside to sugar factories. However, the project to connect Rostock to Berlin never came to fruition. Along the way, you can choose to take the train to shorten the stage (at your own expense); there are several stations along the route. Arrive in Rostock, a city of the German Hanseatic League.

AccommodationOvernight in Rostock
DistanceApproximately 54 km by bike

Take the train from Rostock railway station to the ferry terminal station (at your own expense). You can also choose to cycle through Rostock to the ferry port (approximately 12km, entirely on a cycle path). The ferry crossing to Gedser, on the Danish side, takes 2 hours (included). Welcome to Denmark! A beautiful stage now begins along the dykes and through small forests, following the finest beaches on the island of Falster.

AccommodationOvernight in Nykøbing on the island of Falster
DistanceApproximately 40 km by bike

Follow the coast, then head through the countryside to the old trading town of Stubbekøbing, still on the island of Falster. Take a historic ferry across to the island of Bogø (at your own expense). You can also cycle via Vordingborg and Kalvehave without taking the ferry: cross the bridge and continue your journey on the distinctive island of Møn, with its beaches and white cliffs.

AccommodationOvernight in Stege on the island of Møn
DistanceApproximately 75 km by bike

Cross the bridge to the island of Zealand and cycle north through superb coastal scenery dotted with grand villas and country houses surrounded by farmland… Faxe Ladeplads is approximately 55km away, and Rødvig, with its fascinating cliffs, is approximately 75km away. If you are staying overnight in Rødvig, you will have reached your destination. If you are staying overnight in Køge, you can shorten the stage by taking the train from Fakse or Rødvig (at your own expense).

Alternative: more energetic cyclists can complete the entire stage by bike (approx. 107km).

AccommodationOvernight in Køge or Rødvig
Option AStege - Fakse
Option BStege - Rødvig
Option CStege - Køge

If you spent the night in Rødvig, today’s stage will take you along the beaches. From the village church in Højerup, you will enjoy a unique view of the chalk coastline of Stevns Klint. In Køge, you can visit the local museum, Køge Byhistoriske Arkiv. You will then continue towards Copenhagen. In Ishøj, don’t miss the modern art museum. From your hotel, you can visit the sights of the Danish capital. In the evening, soak up the city’s charming atmosphere and stroll through Tivoli Gardens or along the old harbour.

AccommodationOvernight in Copenhagen
Option AKøge - Copenhagen
Option BRødvig - Copenhagen

We may occasionally need to change the itinerary shown for logistical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in terrain conditions, landslides, damaged trails, etc.) or because of weather conditions. These changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

Technical and practical information

Level 2/5

Moderate. 35 to 70km per cycling day. No particular technical difficulties. Mostly on cycle paths, greenways or quiet roads. Little elevation gain: a maximum of 100m per day.

You only carry a small bag with your picnic lunch and what you need for the day. Your luggage will be waiting at your hotel in the evening: it is transported by the hotelier or by taxi and is limited to 2 bags per person. Maximum weight: 15 kg. We recommend carrying a change of clothes in your panniers, as, in rare and unforeseen circumstances, such as traffic jams, your luggage may arrive late.

11 days / 10 nights / 9 cycling days

We email you a digital travel pack containing:

  • access to our smartphone navigation app,
  • the list of your accommodation,
  • any vouchers you may need,
  • information about arriving at your destination and how the trip works (practical guide),
  • the route book in French

At your first hotel, you will receive:

  • your printed vouchers,
  • your luggage labels,
  • the route book in English – useful for the maps it contains.

This is a self-guided trip, without a guide, so you travel independently throughout your stay.

Bookings are possible for groups of 2 people or more; solo travellers can also book, but this incurs a supplement higher than the single room supplement.

Accommodation in rooms for 2 in 2*, 3* or 4* hotels or equivalent, with private bathroom facilities.
It is not possible to accommodate a 3th person in a room for 2.

Our German and Danish neighbours generally do not have double beds with a single large mattress, and rooms with 2 twin beds are rare. Usually, there is a single bed base with two 90 cm mattresses, and each person has their own duvet. Rooms for 3: these generally have an extra bed added, although the rooms are usually spacious.

Breakfast is included. Dinners and lunches are not included, but you will have no trouble finding somewhere to eat along the way. Please note that dinner is often served early. Be sure to observe meal service times.

Please let us know about any food allergies or special dietary requirements when booking; we will do our best to adapt your meals.

More and more hotels are choosing not to have an official rating, including establishments that were still rated a year or two ago. This does not mean their quality has declined—far from it. If we indicate, for example, a comfort level of “3* or equivalent”: this means that the establishment does not necessarily have an official rating, but offers a level of comfort corresponding to that of a 3* hotel.

Bike hire

These are quality German bikes from “Kalkhoff” (or an equivalent manufacturer, depending on availability), in women’s and men’s models, which should allow you to enjoy your cycling tour without any mechanical problems.

The bikes are equipped with a front suspension fork, a cushioned or gel saddle, a hub dynamo with LED lighting, and a cycle computer.

Equipment:
a 12-litre pannier, a handlebar map holder, a repair kit, a lock and a pump. With electric bikes, you will have 2 panniers, the battery & charger, and a user manual. FollowMe, child seat and trailer available on request.

Hybrid bike: Standard bike: 7/8 gears, wide saddle, 28-inch wheels, coaster brake operated by back-pedalling. Please let us know if you would like this model.

Bike without a coaster brake, with a freewheel, 28-inch wheels and 7 or 24 gears: this is the model we reserve for you by default, as French riders are generally unfamiliar with coaster brakes.

E-bike with 28-inch wheels (on request): electrically assisted bike: ideal if you are not entirely confident in your cycling ability, or if the members of your small group have different fitness levels. See below.

Hydraulic brakes, Bosch motor with a 500 Wh, 36 V battery.

Range: up to 140km, assistance up to 25km/h, 7/8 gears with or without a coaster brake. Klickfix system on the handlebars

Children’s bikes (3 or 5 gears) on request

Transporting your own bikes

If you travel by train, return transport for your bikes from Copenhagen to Oranienburg or vice versa is not included: you will need to make sure you book trains that accept bikes. Please note: connections between trains that accept bikes are not very convenient, and you must carry your luggage and bikes yourself. You may miss a connection and have to wait for the next train. However, there are direct trains from Rostock to Berlin that accept bikes.

The scheduled Copenhagen–Berlin coach service accepts a few bikes on each coach; early booking is essential.

Ferries accept bikes.

Bringing your own bikes is possible but not recommended on this tour. We accept no responsibility for damage, theft or other incidents involving your own bikes.

RETURN from Copenhagen to Berlin:

By train: an 8-hour 20-minute journey with 1 change in Hamburg (bike transport requires a reservation). Visit the German railways DB website

All the information above is provided for guidance, is subject to change and must be checked before departure.

A number of our trips offer opportunities to swim during a day’s route or at the end of the day. It would be a shame to miss out. However, please remember that your guides are not lifeguards; you therefore swim at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety.

For cycling

  • Cycling shorts or tights, depending on the season
  • Cycling gloves
  • A helmet (optional but strongly recommended)
  • Sunglasses (to protect against sunshine, wind and midges)
  • A windproof jacket
  • T-shirts or cycling jerseys
  • A handlebar map holder
  • A handlebar smartphone mount & a power bank
  • A water bottle

Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. Merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has
the advantage of resisting perspiration odours (brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.)! As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you cold when wet.

For your lunchtime picnic

  • A plastic bowl or plate
  • Cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)

For protection against sun and rain

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A hat, cap or bucket hat (helmet)
  • A windproof jacket
  • A rain cape or a Gore-Tex jacket

After the day’s activity

  • A jumper or fleece
  • Comfortable trousers for walking
  • Shorts
  • A tracksuit or a change of clothes
  • A lightweight, long-sleeved cotton shirt
  • A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
  • A toiletry bag
  • A small first-aid kit: personal medication, adhesive strapping, medicated gauze or “2nd skin” dressings, gauze, antiseptic, arnica pellets and aspirin for minor aches and scrapes… (quite a list! But

rest assured, the first-aid kit often comes home untouched after your week of touring)

For carrying your belongings

  • If your bike does not have a pannier, bring a comfortable small 40-litre backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic during the day. If you have a luggage rack, you can secure your bag to it with bungee cords. Rental bikes come with a pannier for your belongings. Even so, bring a small

backpack; it makes it easy to carry your belongings when you stop to visit somewhere along the way.

Laurent 8/17/26

—  It was nice, but the difficulty level was very misleading.

Nadine 8/10/26

—  Very beautiful scenery all along the route—it’s quite varied. The Cyclades bike trails are very good in Germany and Denmark. This type of trip with luggage transport is more suited for seniors (young people carry everything on their bikes), and the stages are too long. Taking the train with your bike isn’t a pleasant solution either.

Marie Line 9/28/26

—  Beautiful routes, magnificent scenery, and high-quality hotels and bikes. However, the stages are uneven in terms of distance and are often long. Ultimately, the 600 km are spread over 9 days, when they could be spread over 10 or 11, which would make the trip more enjoyable because it would be less strenuous. Also, keep in mind that the towns we arrive in aren’t always particularly interesting.

Alain 7/29/26

—  Wide-open natural spaces, a beautiful bike route.
