Individual arrival in Clifden, a small town in Connemara often considered the capital of the region. Check-in at your accommodation. Your bikes and equipment will be waiting for you at your accommodation, so you can test everything and make sure everything is perfect before your adventure begins the next day!
The Beauty of Connemara
Specialist in organized bike trips, Grand Angle offers you an immersion in the wild and authentic landscapes of Connemara. With our expertise in Ireland by bike, we have designed an itinerary that immerses you in the heart of a region with strong character, between the peaks of the Twelve Bens and an Atlantic coast carved with beaches and secret bays.
This self-guided tour allows you to discover the region at your own pace, following peaceful secondary roads on stages of approximately 35 kilometres per day. From Clifden, the capital of Connemara, to the Renvyle Peninsula, passing through the spectacular Sky Road and the shores of Ireland’s only fjord at Leenane, each day reveals a new facet of this legendary land. Each evening, you will enjoy the comfort of 3 star hotels and warm B&Bs, carefully selected by us.
For a more active stay, also discover the Connemara mountains by bike.
Itinerary

Program
After breakfast, your itinerary will take you along the Sky Road (the road of the sky) which offers fabulous views of the Atlantic and its islands. Traveling on small country roads, you will pass through the picturesque village of Cleggan and Letterfrack, where the Connemara National Park is located. Then your route will take you to the Renvyle Peninsula, historically and archaeologically rich and known for its white sand beaches and spectacular views of the 12 Bens mountain range. Night in Renvyle in B&B or hotel.
You leave Renvyle after breakfast. You will pass through Tullycross with its many thatched-roof houses, its small roads winding along the coast and its beautiful beaches to arrive at Leenane, located on the edge of Ireland’s only fjord. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to take a cruise along the Killary Fjord. The catamaran is the perfect way to discover the fjord and its surroundings. This excursion is often honoured by dolphin encounters and always commented along the route on all the main subjects. Night in Leenane in B&B or hotel.
After breakfast, you will continue your journey towards the mountains by leaving Leenane and moving away from the coast to take a road lined with scattered lakes to reach the incredible Inagh Valley. You can also extend your route today, as it is quite short, by visiting one of the most famous places in Ireland, Kylemore Abbey and its gardens. This evening, you will stay in the Lough Inagh Valley. Night at Lough Inagh in B&B or hotel.
Today you will take the road back to the coast, leaving the mountains behind you, heading towards the south of Connemara. You will travel along a road dotted with charming fishing villages. You will travel through the Gaeltacht region (one of the last places in Ireland where Irish is still the native language) which is considered the last bastion of Celtic Ireland. You will arrive at Roundstone where you can enjoy the atmosphere of this picturesque little fishing village. Night at Roundstone in B&B or hotel.
Well rested, you will start your day by following Mannin Bay, a paradise for rolling waves, and will pass through Ballyconneely or if you prefer to take a shorter route, the Bog Road (peat road). The Roundstone bog is unique because it has remained intact. Then, you will arrive at your starting point, Clifden, where you will spend the night and where you will again have the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of this vibrant town which is undoubtedly one of the last treasures of Western Europe. Night at Clifden in B&B or hotel.
End of stay after breakfast.
We may sometimes need to modify the indicated itinerary: either at the organizational level (accommodation overload issues, changes in terrain conditions, landslides, degraded trails, etc.), or due to weather conditions. These modifications are always made for your benefit, for your safety and for your greater comfort!

There is one hour less in Ireland. When it is 12:00 in France, it is 11:00 in Dublin.
If you wish to plan your trip to Ireland, don’t hesitate to travel between April and September: the weather is pleasant, the days sunny, and there is less rain than in winter. Of course, you may experience a few rainy days, but it quite often happens to have a full day of sunshine, only crossed by a few clouds.
In any case, avoid the coldest periods such as December or January when it is really chilly (regardless of which county you are in!). If you ever wish to visit during this season, don’t forget to bring warm and waterproof clothing.

Irish Traditions
The Irish Pub
The pub is probably one of the most well-known Irish institutions. It irresistibly evokes warm atmospheres where conviviality mixes with malty aromas…
Here, you go and order your drink at the bar, which is difficult to reach during peak hours. Don’t get impatient the first time you order a Guinness, since it’s poured in two stages, slowly. You pay as soon as you’re served. At lunchtime, and sometimes in the evening too, pubs offer you hearty and varied food: soups, sandwiches or pub grub, a substantial dish at a reasonable price.
Unless you’re particularly antisocial, you won’t often find yourself alone for more than 10 mn in front of your pint. Important! If you are invited by Irish people, you don’t pay for the first round, and especially, don’t insist… It is customary to drink as often as the Irish person who is with you. Valuable advice: if you’re not used to beer or usually drink it in moderation, start with half pints (or glasses in Ireland). For heavy drinkers, know that a pint costs less than two half pints.
Mythology
Irish mythology holds a prominent place in European myths. It is the oldest that is written in the people’s language. The oldest texts date from the 7th century AD. The founding poem of Irish mythology is the Táin Bó Cuailnge, in English The Cattle Raid of Cooley. In it, in the form of the warriors of the Red Branch, you find the equivalent of the Knights of the Round Table. In the times of long evenings by the fireside around a storyteller during long winter nights, the narration of the Táin, embellished with a few supplementary tales, took an entire week! The central story is a war between the kingdoms of Ulster and Connacht. Among the supplementary tales is one of the most beautiful love stories in European literature, one of the Three Sorrowful Tales of Ireland, that of Deirdre (meaning “sorrow” in Irish). Full of twists and turns, it interweaves love, prophecies, dreams, rivalries, intrigues and battles.
Religions and Beliefs
Ireland is a country of strong religious tradition. You’ll have the chance to see it for yourself: statues of the Virgin Mary around corners, crowds at Sunday mass, and on some radio stations, a minute of silence for evening prayers.
Every year, the ascent of Croagh Patrick brings together hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, and the tiny island of Saint Patrick’s Purgatory (Donegal) can receive up to 2500 penitents for three nights of prayers and mortification.
To understand such fervor, we need to look back. Christianity took hold gently and did not relegate the ancient sacred places and figures to the rank of demonic antiquities. It assimilated them. Catholic religion became the symbol of Irish resistance against the Anglican invader. Daniel O’Connell founded the Catholic Association and gathered, in 1843, nearly 1 million people at Tara (ancient capital of Celtic kings, still a Celtic-Catholic mix); finally, the Constitution of 1922 presents a resolutely clerical aspect. The important place of religion is obviously not unrelated to Ireland’s conservatism on social issues. It wasn’t until 1993 that homosexuality was decriminalized, divorce has only been legal since 1996, and abortion has only been possible since 2013… but only when the mother’s life is in danger!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by Valérie in AugustA beautiful route that has remained largely untouched by tourism. Villages with an atmosphere that still feels authentic. A wonderful way to explore Ireland.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by Marie Joseph in JulyA great tour because of its variety of landscapes
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by DANIEL in JuneGOOD
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by Michel in JuneA nice rural hike with an interesting atmosphere—sometimes familiar, sometimes exotic—and not too difficult. Hotels and B&Bs: Shillelagh Central House is rustic, but the friendly, helpful, and cheerful owners make up for everything; Glenmalure Lodge is magnificent, comfortable, and offers gourmet dining; Glendalough Hotel is overrated, soulless, and serves very low-quality meals. The only downside was GA’s lack of responsiveness during trip planning: documents arrived very late, no GPX tracks or GPS app available, and several follow-ups were needed for transfers… A bit unpleasant, even though everything turned out perfectly once we were there. Poor communication between GA and its local agent?
Thank you for your detailed feedback.
We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay.
Regarding the trip planning, we apologize for our lack of responsiveness and the delays in sending the documents. This was a new product, customized as a semi-guided tour at your request, and our local service provider does not yet systematically provide GPX tracks or an app for this type of route, which is generally well-marked in Ireland. We will take the necessary steps to obtain the routes for future versions.
Best regards, The Grand Angle Team
