Set off on a cycling getaway along the Danube, where every stage combines comfort with authenticity. We have selected accommodation full of character, favouring charm and authenticity over opulence. Historic buildings, hotels with wellness facilities and a warm, typically Austrian welcome: everything comes together to make this trip an unforgettable experience.

The banks of the Danube reveal the romantic soul of Austria by bike, amid picturesque villages, renowned vineyards and landscapes steeped in history. Along the way, you will ride through the Wachau, one of the country’s most beautiful wine regions.

Follow the famous Danube Cycle Path, a route designed for cyclists that winds through natural landscapes and historic sites. From Passau (Germany) to Vienna, via Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, you will cycle past castles and iconic towns on one of the most beautiful sections of EuroVelo 6, the “Rivers Route”.

Program

Arrive in Passau, a Bavarian town at the confluence of 3 rivers: the Ilz, the Inn and the Danube.

Your additional travel documents and hire bikes will be provided at the hotel.

Take time to stroll through this Baroque town, which offers an impressive wealth of historic sights. Be sure to visit the cathedral and, if you wish, attend a concert on the world’s largest church organ (except on Sundays and public holidays).

Schärding is a small Baroque town, 15km from Passau. We recommend starting your stay here if you are arriving by car, as free public parking is available for the week, unlike in Passau.

Passau

AccommodationOvernight in a 4* hotel in Passau or Schärding (15km from Passau).

Enjoy another short visit to Passau, then set off for Wesenufer via Obernzell and Engelhartszell Abbey.

You arrive in Schlögen. Here, the granite proved an insurmountable obstacle, forcing the Danube to change direction by 180 degrees. You will have time to admire this natural phenomenon as a ferry takes you to the opposite bank and your hotel.

Veste Oberhausen fortress in Passau

AccommodationOvernight in a 4* hotel in Schlögen.
Option AFrom Passau
Option BFrom Schärding

Starting from the famous Schlögen Bend, the towpaths cross the wild Engtal valley and take you to Aschbach, Ottensheim and Wilhering, known for its Rococo-style Cistercian abbey. You pass through traditional towns with old houses, with castles and monasteries lining both riverbanks. You reach Linz, the beautiful capital of Upper Austria and European Capital of Culture in 2009.

Possible shortcut: take the train from Eferding to Linz (approximately 40 minutes by train); Schlögen – Eferding: approximately 30km by bike.

View of Schlögen

AccommodationOvernight in Linz at a 4* hotel
DistanceApproximately 55 km by bike

Head towards Grein via Mauthausen. The Danube valley widens, with cultivated fields all around. Today, you will leave the banks of the Danube for a while to visit St. Florian (an Augustinian monastery) and Enns. In Enns, you will visit the town square with its tower, 60 metres high, the symbol of Austria’s oldest town. You can also admire the archaeological collection at the Lauriacum town museum. You then follow the Danube again. The valley narrows as you approach Grein, at the entrance to the Strudengau, where the valley is very narrow and the river winds through numerous bends. Grein is a picturesque riverside town with a boating heritage, overlooked by its castle. You can get a glimpse of Austria’s oldest municipal theatre still in operation. You can also visit the navigation museum or Greinburg Castle.

Possible shortcut: take the train from Linz to Mauthausen (approximately 25 minutes by train); this leaves just 39km of cycling to Grein.

Sights in Grein

AccommodationOvernight at a 4* hotel in Grein
DistanceApproximately 55 km by bike

The stretch of the Danube once feared by boatmen now awaits cyclists: the Strudengau. Where people once battled the Danube’s currents, you can now enjoy a leisurely ride. In Maria Taferl, a magnificent Baroque basilica stands high above the Danube and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.

Melk Abbey

AccommodationOvernight at a 4* hotel in Melk, in the Wachau.
DistanceApproximately 50 to 60 km by bike

Today, in Melk, pause for a moment and look up so you do not miss the beauty of Melk Abbey overlooking the Danube. Once you leave the town, you will make your way into the Wachau landscape, discovering the enchanting atmosphere of the orchards and vineyards typical of this region. Passing through the small wine-growing towns of Spitz and Weißenkirchen and past the ruins of Dürnstein Castle, you will finish this stage in the thousand-year-old town of Krems, in Traismauer or in Tulln. A wine tasting rounds off your day in the Wachau.

Possible shortcut: take a boat (approximately 16km), for example from Spitz (departure at 11:40) or Dürnstein (departure at 12:30) to Krems (arrival around 12:50). Check schedules locally

Danube Cycle Path in the Wachau

AccommodationOvernight at a 4* hotel in Krems
DistanceApproximately 40 km by bike

You leave the vineyards behind and return to wide open fields and the flower-filled town of Tulln along the southern bank, then continue through the Vienna Woods to Greifenstein, on the outskirts of Vienna. Depending on the route option chosen, part of the journey will be by train (not included). On arrival, settle into your room and enjoy all the city has to offer for the rest of the day. Savour a slice of Sachertorte in a Viennese café, stroll along the shopping street Mariahilfer Straße and visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Possible shortcut: by train from Höflein to Vienna; Krems–Höflein: approximately 45km by bike.

Belvedere Gardens in Vienna

AccommodationOvernight stay in a 5* hotel in Vienna.
DistanceApproximately 75 km by bike

Your stay ends after breakfast, or you can stay an extra night (optional).

Volksgarten park in Vienna

We may occasionally need to change the itinerary shown, either for operational reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in terrain conditions, rockfalls, damaged paths, etc.) or because of weather conditions. These changes are always made in your best interests, for your safety and greater comfort!

Technical and practical information

2/5 easy to moderate
Approximately 40 to 75km per cycling day. No particular technical difficulties. 98% of the route follows cycle paths. Each day, you can shorten the stage by taking a train or boat to make the route easier. We provide information about these options with your travel pack.

You carry only a small bag with your picnic lunch and the things you need for the day. Your luggage will be waiting at your hotel in the evening (by 18:00 at the latest): it is transported by the hotelier or by taxi and is limited to one bag per person, weighing no more than 15 kg. We recommend carrying a change of clothes in your panniers, as luggage deliveries may occasionally be delayed by rare, unforeseen circumstances, such as traffic jams. Luggage may arrive as late as 18:00.

Bookings are available for 2 people or more; solo travellers can also book, but a single room supplement applies.

No 2027 departure period is confirmed in the connected catalogue. Ask our team for future operating dates before making travel arrangements.

8 days / 7 nights, 6 days of cycling

This is a self-guided holiday. There is no guide accompanying you. We will send your travel information before departure (accommodation list and joining instructions). You will receive an additional travel pack on arrival (1 per room), including a route guide with maps and vouchers, among other items. A printed pack can be sent to you for a supplement.

Rooms for 2 with a bathroom / toilet; single rooms are available for a supplement.

In Germany and Austria, double beds with a single large mattress are generally uncommon, as are rooms with 2 separate twin beds. Usually, there is a single bed base with two 90 cm mattresses, and each person has their own duvet. Rooms for 3: these usually have an extra bed added, although the rooms are generally spacious.

Breakfast is included. Lunch and dinner are not included. You will have no difficulty finding somewhere to eat along the way at lunchtime.

You can have dinner in the hotel restaurants (where available) or in nearby restaurants.
Please note! People in Germany and Austria often eat dinner early. Be sure to check and respect restaurant serving hours.

The cycling route starts in Passau or Schärding and ends in Vienna. Arrange travel from your own departure city. Munich and Vienna airports and rail connections may be suitable; check current services, times and fares directly with the operators before booking.

Ask your hotel or local parking provider to confirm availability and current charges in Passau or Schärding. The connected catalogue lists an optional return minibus from Vienna to Passau or Schärding (€110 per person, with a €50 supplement for a personal bicycle). Confirm the service and bike space with our team when requesting a future departure. For train travel, check bike-carriage and reservation rules with the operator.

For cycling

  • Cycling shorts or tights, depending on the season
  • Cycling gloves
  • A helmet (optional but strongly recommended)
  • Sunglasses (to protect against the sun, wind and midges)
  • A windproof jacket
  • T-shirts or cycling jerseys
  • A handlebar map holder
  • A water bottle

Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting sweat odours (brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.)!
As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you feel cold when wet.

For your lunchtime picnic

  • A plastic bowl or plate
  • Cutlery (spoon, fork and knife)

For protection against sun and rain

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A hat, cap or bucket hat (helmet)
  • A windproof jacket
  • A rain poncho or Gore-Tex jacket

After the day’s activities

  • A jumper or fleece
  • Comfortable trousers for walking
  • A pair of shorts
  • Swimwear and a beach towel
  • A tracksuit or a change of clothes
  • A lightweight, long-sleeved cotton shirt
  • A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
  • Spare clothes and underwear
  • A toiletry bag
  • A small first-aid kit: personal medication, Elastoplast, Bio-Gaze or “2nd skin” dressings, gauze, antiseptic, arnica granules and aspirin for minor aches and injuries… (quite a list! But rest assured, the kit often comes home untouched after your week of hiking)

To carry your belongings:

  • If your bike does not have a pannier, bring a small, comfortable 40-litre backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic during the day. If you have a luggage rack, you can secure your bag to it with bungee cords. Rental bikes come with a pannier for your belongings. Bring a small backpack as well; this makes it easy to carry your belongings when you stop to visit somewhere along the way.
  • Luggage for transfer: a backpack, suitcase or travel bag in good condition
