The Vercors is a unique destination for walking enthusiasts. As a designated Regional Natural Park, this pre-Alps massif stands out for its contrasting scenery: deep forests, windswept high plateaus, and impressive gorges. It is also a land steeped in history, which has managed to preserve its wild nature and remarkable biodiversity. To hike in the Vercors is to immerse yourself in a place where nature reigns supreme, far from the crowds of the major Alpine peaks.
Choosing a self-guided trip with Grand Angle means opting for autonomy without the logistical hassles. We take care of booking quality accommodations for you and arranging luggage transportation between each stage. Every morning, you set off with just a daypack, equipped with a detailed roadbook and precise maps. This formula guarantees complete peace of mind, allowing you to fully enjoy the trails and the scenery. Discover all our self-guided walking tours in France for more inspiration.
This itinerary offers a true immersion into the heart of the massif. It will lead you through the region’s most iconic landscapes, from the wild high plateaus to charming villages like La Chapelle-en-Vercors. Designed for experienced walkers, the Tour of the Vercors Mountains is an unforgettable experience that reveals the full diversity of this preserved territory.
The Vercors is best discovered from late spring to early autumn. A hike in the spring allows you to admire abundant wildflowers, while the autumn offers brilliant colors and exceptional light, perfect for photographers. Summer is also an excellent season, with pleasant temperatures at altitude.
While mountain weather can be unpredictable, a few essentials will ensure a comfortable hike. Plan on sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing, sun protection, and plenty of water. To make sure you don’t forget anything, check out our comprehensive day hike packing list.
If you enjoyed the freedom and magnificent landscapes of the Vercors, you will certainly be captivated by other massifs in the French Alps. The spirit of our hiking tours in France is present in many regions, each with its own unique character. For those who love wide-open spaces and well-marked trails, our other hiking tours in the Alps promise new and exciting adventures.

— A beautiful, very well-organized route with some great stops!

— Magnificent sites, well-designed route, quality accommodation. The guidebook should mention the long and arduous descent on D4 from the Belvédère du Ranc, and the duration of the hike on D4 is grossly underestimated.
