The Upper Roya Valley: from Tende to Menton
This hiking route takes you from Tende to Menton, through the unspoilt Upper Roya and Bévéra valleys, on the doorstep of the Mercantour. It follows a historic route linking the mountain villages of the Southern Alps to the Mediterranean coast, offering a full immersion in the landscapes and heritage of the hinterland of Nice.
Following the old Royal Road that connected Nice to Piedmont, you discover a rich cultural heritage. The route passes remarkable hilltop villages such as Saorge and Sainte-Agnès, chapels adorned with frescoes by the early painters of Nice, and churches with Baroque interiors that reflect the rich history of this border region.
Each stage reveals balcony trails overlooking the gorges and winding through olive groves and pine woods. The route reaches its high point with the panoramic views from the summit of Baudon, before beginning the final descent towards Menton and its gardens, along the trails of the Balcons de la Côte d’Azur.
This group trek is an opportunity to share a rewarding experience, led by a guide with specialist knowledge of the region. For those who prefer to walk at their own pace, this route is also available as a self-guided walking holiday: The Upper Roya Valley, on the Trails to the Sea.

Program
Short train transfer from La Brigue to Tende (10 min), a visit to Tende’s church (Baroque altarpieces and an Italian organ) and a stroll through the village’s medieval lanes. Then hike from Tende to La Brigue along a beautiful balcony trail and over the Col de Boselia (at an altitude of 1111m). Then descend from La Brigue to Notre Dame des Fontaines along a new trail. Visit the chapel of Notre Dame des Fontaines: the largest collection of wall paintings in the Alps (1492), in an exceptional state of preservation.
Return to La Brigue.
A beautiful stage from La Brigue to St-Dalmas-de-Tende along lovely balcony trails above the Roya gorges. Then continue from St-Dalmas to Fontan via the mountain hamlets of Granile and Berghe. During the day, we discover La Brigue’s church (altarpieces by the early painters of Nice, including one by Bréa), the traditional architecture of Granile, one of the Roya Valley’s most beautiful mountain hamlets, and Fontan’s Baroque church. Transfer to Breil-sur-Roya.
Bus transfer to Saorge. Explore the narrow streets of Saorge, the region’s most beautiful hilltop village. Walk from the village of Saorge to Breil via the Collet du Mont Aigu, which offers a lovely view over the entire valley. In Breil-sur-Roya, discover one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in the hinterland of Nice, along with its 18th-century organs.
Walk from Breil-sur-Roya to Sospel via the hilltop village of Piène Haute, where we will explore the village and, in particular, its church (with an 18th-century Baroque dance of death). Our route follows splendid balcony trails lined with olive groves, high above the Roya and Bévéra rivers. On arrival in Sospel, we marvel at its 15th-century toll bridge. Transfer to Sainte-Agnès.
A steady climb via the Col du Bausson. For 30 minutes, we follow a small mountain road with panoramic sea views. The summit of Cime de Baudon offers an exceptional 360° view of the whole region and the surrounding peaks.
An easy run, almost all the way to the sea! A beautiful route through pine woods along the “Balcons de la Côte d’Azur” trail to the hilltop village of Castellar and the Saint-Sébastien chapel. Then descend via Le Baousset to Menton’s old town, its harbour and the Baroque Saint-Michel church.
The trip ends in Menton at around 15:30.
This itinerary combines cultural exploration and walking, with the balance varying from day to day.
It broadly follows the famous “Route Royale”, created by the rulers of Savoy to connect Nice with Piedmont via the Col de Tende. Although the route runs entirely through the mountains, it never rises above 1200m in altitude, making it suitable for walking both in winter and in the shoulder seasons.
The cultural programme outlined above is a guide only, as visits depend on the opening arrangements of sites and monuments.

A number of our trips offer opportunities to swim, either during the day’s route or at the end of the day. It would be a shame not to make the most of them. However, we emphasise that you alone must decide whether it is appropriate to swim; any swimming is therefore your own responsibility and at your own risk.

The Mediterranean climate makes this trip possible all year round. Late autumn (for its colours) and early spring (for its flowers) are probably the most pleasant seasons for hiking. But be aware! In a Mediterranean climate, these are also the rainiest times of the year! There is therefore a real risk of encountering unsettled weather along the way.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Comment sent by Christine in AugustIt was a wonderful trip for our first visit to the Vercors: magnificent landscapes that changed every day, a great group, and a super-friendly and very professional guide. The hotel was very pleasant and the staff was warm and welcoming. And as a bonus, we saw ibex and marmots!
