This guided walking holiday invites you to explore the unspoilt landscapes of the Queyras Regional Natural Park, a hidden corner of the Southern Alps. Designed as a single-centre holiday, this trip lets you discover a new valley each day without changing accommodation, staying in the lively village of Aiguilles.

The programme features varied routes of difficulty level 2, leading to mountain lakes that reflect the surrounding peaks, through expansive alpine pastures and larch forests. You will follow balcony trails offering panoramic views of the peaks along the Italian border, including Mont Viso, and discover villages with distinctive traditional heritage, such as Saint-Véran, one of Europe’s highest municipalities, with its log houses and sundials.

Your guide, an expert on the region, will share their knowledge of the wildlife, plants and local heritage. This group holiday is designed to bring people together and encourage rewarding conversations. Please confirm the guide’s working language when enquiring.

For those who would like to explore these mountains independently, discover our self-guided Tour du Queyras.

Program

Your meeting place and time, including any station transfer, will be confirmed when a departure becomes available. You will then settle in and be introduced to the holiday programme.

AccommodationOvernight in a 2* hotel in Aiguilles

We set off from the charming hamlet of La Rua and cross a beautiful larch forest dotted with bright, flower-filled clearings to reach the pass, where a few chalets stand. An easy route along a broad ridge takes us to the panoramic orientation tables on the summit of Bucher, at an altitude of 2,250 m. From up here, the 360° panoramic view over the entire Queyras is breathtaking. On the way back, we will take time to visit the small Saint-Simon chapel and the old “Clot l’Henri” sheepfold, recently restored as part of local heritage conservation efforts.

We begin our exploration at the foot of Saint-Véran, in one of the Queyras’s most beautiful mixed forests of Swiss stone pine and larch. Perhaps we will be lucky enough to spot a spotted nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes), which lives in these woods (your guide will tell you more!). We will reach the Curlet cross, then follow an easy path along the Lamaron ridge, with magnificent panoramic views of Saint-Véran and the peaks along the Italian border.
For more energetic walkers, there is the option of climbing the Pic de Cascavelier. Our outing ends with a guided tour of Saint-Véran, Europe’s highest municipality: discovering its distinctive architecture, sundials and wooden fountains will immerse us in the traditional life of this region.

A day devoted entirely to panoramic views! We will head towards the gateway to the high mountains to explore alpine lakes and observe the flora and fauna that survive on the edge of the permanent snow. We will take the minibus to a car park at an altitude of 2620 metres to dive straight into the adventure! Although the elevation gain is modest and the distance short, we will be rewarded with majestic panoramic views of the Alpine range and Mont Viso (3841m). Expect more rugged terrain than usual, along with a unique experience!
Optional: At the end of the day, you can visit the “La Maison du Miel” honey museum in Molines.

On this walk, you will discover scenery worthy of a postcard! After a minibus transfer to the Arvieux valley, at the foot of the famous Col d’Izoard, you will soon find yourself surrounded by alpine pastures. Amid these wide open spaces, the summer grazing chalets of L’Echaillon and Clapeyto form a harmonious scene that evokes the traditional life of mountain farmers. Above the pastures, numerous small lakes dot the grassy slopes. A peaceful day to enjoy to the full!

The trip ends after breakfast

There are many possible hikes in Queyras Regional Natural Park, and during the week we will be able to discover all the wonders of the mountains: high-altitude lakes, hamlets with distinctive architecture, alpine pastures, and encounters with a shepherd or beekeeper, as well as an easy ascent of a magnificent peak over 3000m! The itinerary may vary to make the most of the best times to explore the themes of the holiday (flora, fauna, alpine pastures, etc.). Your guide will plan it with you.

For carrying your belongings

  • A comfortable 30 to 50 L backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day
  • A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, a travel bag in good condition or a reasonably compact suitcase. One bag per person, with a 15kg weight limit

Find out how to pack your hiking backpack in our magazine.

For hiking

For maximum comfort, choose a layered clothing system: warm thermal underwear (leggings + top), such as “Carline” or “Capilene” (hollow fibres that wick away perspiration) + a sweatshirt or fleece jacket + a mountain jacket and overtrousers with a waterproof, breathable membrane (such as Gore-Tex or equivalent) for bad weather. As a general rule, except in hot climates and countries, avoid cotton, which traps moisture close to the body (and takes a long time to dry), and choose suitable synthetic fabrics instead.

  • Hiking boots with ankle support, a sturdy, deeply treaded sole, a reinforced heel counter and good waterproofing
  • Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
  • A fleece
  • Comfortable walking trousers (quick-drying technical fabric)
  • Comfortable shorts in technical fabric
  • Technical T-shirts or base layers (quick-drying fabric)
  • A long-sleeved shirt
  • Walking poles (telescopic), which are very important for making walking easier. Discover all the benefits of hiking poles in our dedicated article or how to choose your hiking poles
  • 1 emergency blanket
  • Toilet paper; follow local waste rules and carry out used paper where required

Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting perspiration odours!

For your lunchtime picnic

  • Your eating kit: a plastic bowl, container or plate, and cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
  • 1 or 2 water bottles (at least 1,5 L in total) – compulsory –; an insulated flask for winter

For protection from sun and rain

  • Sunscreen (high protection)
  • Sunglasses
  • A hat, cap or bucket hat
  • A rain poncho or a waterproof jacket, such as a softshell or Gore-Tex jacket, and optionally waterproof trousers

After your activities

  • A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
  • A change of clothes and underwear
  • A toiletry bag and a small towel
  • Swimwear and a towel for wellness facilities (where specified) or swimming
  • A small first-aid kit and your usual personal medicines; ask a qualified professional for advice on any medication you may need
  • Check whether your confirmed accommodation requires a sleeping bag liner

Find these tips in our article #"what to take on a hike".

This list is provided as a guide and should be adapted to your trip and the season in which you are travelling.

Many guidebooks are available in bookshops to help you prepare for your stay. For example, you could consult “Parc Naturel Régional du Queyras”, published by Gallimard, which is well illustrated and easy to read. For a taste of the atmosphere of the Queyras, “L’Autre Versant”, from Éditions Hesse, features superb photographs by Christophe Sidamon-Pesson accompanied by texts by Michel Blanchet.

Several titles in the outstanding “Les Cahiers du Patrimoine” series, published by Éditions du Queyras, offer an introduction to the distinctive features of local heritage (“Dentelles du Queyras et des vallées voisines”, “Ceillac au fil du temps”, “Fort Queyras”, “Cadrans Solaires du Queyras”…).

Several books written by older local residents also evoke life in the region, past and present. These include the books by Céleste Fournier published by Éditions du Queyras, the memoirs of Philippe Lamour, an iconic figure in the Queyras, entitled “Le Cadran Solaire”, and Albert Borel’s collection of recollections, “Les Pieds en Queyras”.

Finally, for literature lovers, the valleys of the Queyras have provided the setting for many novels. Examples include “Les Hauts Pays” by Philippe Lamour, the novels of Raymonde Meyer-Moyne and, for a contemporary work, “Le Dernier Refuge” by Nicolas Crunchant.

Dominique 12/27/25

—  The whole group was delighted with their stay in the Queyras: highly professional guides (Jemma and Christophe) who listened attentively to our needs, hikes in a number of very different Queyras valleys that suited our level of ability, a quality family-run hotel offering a warm welcome and excellent meals, and minibus transport with punctual drivers who drove impressively on the narrow mountain roads. And, after a rainy first day, we had nothing but sunshine and mild temperatures, allowing us to take full advantage of the panoramic views of this beautiful region. A wonderful week! Dominique and the Méaudret group

Françoise 8/19/26

—  A trip featuring high-quality lodging and dining, exploring the region through hikes of moderate difficulty, while still having free time at the end of the day to relax and enjoy yourself.

Anne 12/27/25

—  A little wonder to discover in autumn, golden paths, a good pace and quality accommodation. Thank you

Philippe 7/29/26

—  Wonderful hikes with a knowledgeable and very attentive guide. I highly recommend it.
