In the heart of the Julian Alps in Slovenia, this eight-day guided walking trip takes you to discover the country’s most beautiful alpine lakes. From your base in Kranjska Gora, an authentic alpine village on the doorstep of Triglav National Park, explore the natural treasures of this unspoilt region: the glacial Lake Bohinj, the crystal-clear Fusine lakes across the border in Italy, and the spectacular views of the Karavanke mountains.

This single-centre holiday combines the comfort of a **** hotel with the diversity of Slovenia’s landscapes. Each day brings a new setting: limestone peaks, larch forests, the traditional alpine pastures of Velika Planina and the turquoise waters of famous Lake Bled. A varied itinerary designed for walkers who want to discover the authentic alpine character of Slovenia in a guided group.

Program

From 15:00, you will be welcomed at your hotel in Kranjska Gora, where free parking is available. Set in the heart of the Julian Alps, on the border with Austria and Italy, Kranjska Gora is an idyllic alpine destination nestled in the picturesque Sava River valley. You will stay close to Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park, in an exceptional natural setting. You will settle into comfortable double rooms for a stay of 6 nights. At 18:30, your guide will give you a detailed introduction to the holiday itinerary. A buffet dinner offers a varied selection of dishes in a friendly atmosphere.

Please note: for logistical reasons, only one group transfer from the airport to your hotel is scheduled, in the late afternoon. If you arrive earlier or later, you will need to travel to Bled by bus or train at your own expense, where your guide or a driver will meet you and take you to your accommodation. We can book a private taxi transfer for you for added comfort.

After a short transfer of 15 minutes, we reach the starting point of our walk to discover the spectacular twin cascades of Peričnik, Slovenia’s highest waterfall. From the charming village of Mojstrana, the route initially follows the river, where we may be lucky enough to spot the elusive white-throated dipper. We then continue uphill to the two majestic cascades before a gentle return along the shaded river, with its emerald reflections.

After a transfer of around 45 minutes, we reach the Bohinj valley and its beautiful glacial lake, nestled among the mountains. The day begins with a visit to the Alpine Dairy Farming Museum, housed in the village’s first cheese dairy, for an insight into local traditions. We then walk through the village of Stara Fužina before entering the impressive Mostnica Gorge, carved by the river into a narrow canyon with remarkable geological formations. A relaxed picnic break gives us a chance to taste Mohant, the valley’s signature cheese. We return along a wide path leading to the lakeshore, where a swim is possible depending on the season.

A transfer of 10 minutes takes us to the Italian border. We begin our walk gently along a wide trail on the valley floor, heading towards the nature park, where lynx have been reintroduced and are monitored. We then descend towards the Fusine Lakes, whose crystal-clear waters and reflections of the Slovenian peaks create a beautiful, peaceful setting. We enjoy a picnic break by the water before returning to our starting point along an easier path.

After a transfer of around 40 minutes, we reach the vast Pokljuka plateau, situated at an altitude of 1200metres and covered in extensive forests. This landmark area is also known for hosting a round of the Biathlon World Championships in winter. The walk begins gently through the forest before reaching an alpine pasture with magnificent views of the Triglav massif and the Bohinj valley. A picnic break overlooking this spectacular scenery gives us time to fully enjoy the surroundings. We return along a shaded trail, climbing gradually back to our starting point. At the end of the day, we return to the hotel with a stop in Bled, a picture-postcard Slovenian destination.

We then head towards Kozjak Waterfall along a spectacular route passing above the Soča River, famous for its waters in striking shades of emerald. At the end of the day, we return towards Kranjska Gora via the Vršič Pass, Slovenia’s highest road pass at an altitude of 1600metres, with numerous alpine views along the way.

We leave Kranjska Gora for the Kamnik region before heading up to Velika Planina, Slovenia’s highest alpine pasture, renowned for its distinctive herders' huts. This vast plateau is one of the few places in the country where traditional pastoral life is still very much alive. Every summer, herders bring their flocks here to graze in the alpine meadows, continuing age-old practices. The wooden huts, with their characteristic shapes designed to withstand the harsh mountain climate, bear witness to this authentic way of life, and some are still occupied today. After a picnic on the alpine pasture, we set off for Ljubljana (a transfer of approximately 40 minutes). We check in at the hotel in the middle of the afternoon, then take a short walk of around ten minutes to the historic centre. A guided tour introduces us to the Slovenian capital, followed by free time and dinner at a restaurant in the city.

We may need to alter the itinerary shown, either for logistical reasons (accommodation capacity issues, splitting groups, changes in terrain conditions, rockfalls, damaged trails, etc.) or at the guide’s discretion (weather, the group’s ability, etc.).
