Fresh snow is falling somewhere… The winter tribes are buzzing with excitement! Skiers, snowshoers, mushers… They all begin their seasonal migration in search of it. Some head to France. Others to Europe. They bring their finest gear: cross-country skis, touring skis, pulkas, snowshoes and sleds. These people share a love of snowy landscapes and a passion for gliding across them. Their motto is: “Winter is not a season, it’s a celebration” (Anamika Mishra).

Snowshoeing, the art of getting around for our earliest ancestors!

Snowshoes are thought to date back to prehistoric times. They were essential for every people who needed to travel over snow to hunt, build homes or meet one another… They were almost certainly inspired by animals that move nimbly over snow, such as hares. Native Americans perfected them, and it was through them that Europeans discovered snowshoes.
To honour this invention, will you take your snowshoes (and yourself!) on a grand winter adventure? The powder snow of the Vercors or the Jura will put them to work! The Dolomites offer vast plateaus at an altitude of 2 000 metres. But if your snowshoes prefer a more leisurely pace, take them on a holiday combining walking with thermal bathing, spa treatments and massages!

Skiing, the dance of the winter gods!

Scandinavia and Lapland are the birthplace of skiing (the word itself is Norwegian). In Norse mythology, Ull and Skadi are the gods of skiing! They certainly deserve a few offerings of mulled wine and kanelbullar! If you would like to bring these yourself, put on your Nordic touring skis and set off on adventures in the Far North in Norway. Or head to the village of Levi, Finland’s 1st ski resort: 300 km of perfectly groomed trails and 28 km of floodlit trails, so you can keep on gliding. But if your childhood dreams were filled with sled dogs, Sweden is where you can make them come true!
In France, skiers have magnificent mountain ranges to explore. The Queyras Regional Nature Park is a good friend of winter: more than 150 km of cross-country ski trails for all abilities wind from one valley to the next. And for a short skate-skiing getaway, come to our beloved Vercors!
