Program

Settle into your hotel. An initial walk, number 1, is possible along the Tarn Gorges, following an out-and-back route towards Florac, or you can take the opportunity to visit one of France’s most beautiful villages, Sainte-Enimie, nestled in the heart of the gorges. The village grew around a monastery built in the sixth century and owes its fame to Enimie, a Merovingian princess said to have been cured of leprosy by the waters of the Burle spring. Wander through the old streets paved with pebbles from the Tarn, past historic houses and restored little squares that have helped the village regain its medieval appearance.
Overnight in a hotel in Sainte-Enimie.

2 options:
1/ Walk to La Malène (14 km), then take an optional boat trip down the Tarn Gorges (as far as the Cirque de Baume) with the Bateliers de la Malène (boats for 4 to 6 people, 100 € per boat). Finish with a 1-hour walk.
2/ A very demanding day. Leave Sainte-Enimie along the left bank of the Tarn and head downstream towards Les Vignes, through the heart of the Tarn Gorges, passing the Cirque de Saint-Chély, Château de la Caze, the hamlet of Hauterives, La Malène, Les Détroits and the Pas de Souci, a huge jumble of boulders blocking the Tarn beneath the Roc Aiguille.

Technical and practical information

For moderately experienced to strong walkers who have already completed day hikes involving 4 to 7 hours 30 minutes of walking and elevation gains of + 400 to + 600m.

On day 2, if you do not take the boats from La Malène, the walk is very long and fairly demanding, so you need to set off early. This is suitable only for very strong walkers; otherwise, the boat option from La Malène is ideal.

No main luggage to carry: you carry only a small backpack with your picnic lunch and the things you need for the day. Your luggage will be waiting for you at your accommodation every evening. One bag per person, weighing no more than 15 kg.

From 2 people.

7 days, 6 nights, 6 days of walking.

Choose your own departure date, from April to October.

A self-guided trip without a guide; we provide a digital travel pack containing access to our smartphone navigation app, a list of your accommodation, any vouchers required and all the information you need for your trip to run smoothly.

If you wish, we can send a printed travel pack to your home, including maps, a route guide and a travel wallet, for a supplement of 35 € per pack. For printed travel packs requested less than 45 days before departure, and for travellers living abroad, the pack will be available at the first hotel of your stay.

Accommodation

2*-rated hotels or equivalent, 2 night in 3*-rated accommodation, guesthouses and a walkers' inn, in rooms for 2. You may stay in shared rooms, particularly in Nivoliers, with bathroom facilities on the landing; no discount applies for this.

Hotel classification

In France, more and more hotels and guesthouses are choosing not to have an official rating, including establishments that were still rated just one or two years ago. This does not mean their quality has declined—far from it. Many of the guesthouses are charming places to stay.
If we indicate, for example, a comfort level of “3* or equivalent”: this means that the establishment does not necessarily have an official rating, but offers a level of comfort comparable to a 3* hotel.

Meals

Half-board: breakfasts and hot dinners.
Picnic lunches are not included. You can buy supplies in the villages or ask your hotel to prepare a packed lunch: in this case, you must let them know the day before.
Please let us know about any food allergies or special dietary requirements when booking; we will do our best to adapt your meals.

Parking your car

Parking is available near the first accommodation for the duration of the walking holiday. You can park in the village; the hotels do not have enough parking spaces, but there is space in the public car parks.

A number of our trips offer opportunities to swim, during a day’s walk or at the end of the day. It would be a shame to miss out. However, we emphasise that it is up to you to decide whether swimming is appropriate; you therefore swim under your own responsibility and at your own risk.

As members of the board of directors since 2018, we actively help the sector develop more meaningful practices. In practical terms, we work to ensure:

  • Transparency in our practices and prices
  • Respect for our partners and local communities
  • Protection of the environment on every trip

We also share the values of the Traveller’s Ethical Charter, which encourages everyone to take simple steps to protect the places they visit and make meaningful connections with others.

Carrying your belongings

  • A comfortable 30 to 50 L backpack with a hip belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic lunch during the day
  • A bag for luggage transfers: a backpack, a travel bag in good condition or a suitcase that is not too bulky. One bag per person, with a maximum weight of 15 kg

Read our magazine guide to packing your hiking backpack properly.

For hiking

For maximum comfort, choose a layered clothing system: warm base layers (leggings + top) such as “Carline” or “Capilene” (hollow fibres that wick away perspiration) + a sweatshirt or fleece jacket + a mountain jacket and overtrousers with a waterproof, breathable membrane (such as Gore-Tex or equivalent) for bad weather. As a general rule, except in hot climates and countries, avoid cotton, which holds moisture close to the body (and dries slowly), and choose suitable synthetic fabrics instead.

  • Hiking boots with ankle support, a good lugged sole, a supportive heel counter and good waterproofing
  • Comfortable hiking socks (at least 3 pairs)
  • A fleece
  • Comfortable walking trousers (quick-drying technical fabric)
  • Comfortable technical shorts
  • Technical T-shirts or base layers (quick-drying fabric)
  • A long-sleeved shirt
  • Walking poles (telescopic), very important for making walking easier. Discover all the benefits of hiking poles in our dedicated article or how to choose your hiking poles

Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of resisting odours from perspiration!

For your picnic lunch

  • Your eating kit: a plastic bowl, container or plate, and cutlery (spoon, fork, knife)
  • 1 or 2 water bottles (a total capacity of at least 1,5 L) – essential –; an insulated flask for winter

For protection from sun and rain

  • Sunscreen (high protection)
  • Sunglasses
  • A hat, cap or bucket hat
  • A rain poncho or a waterproof jacket such as a softshell or Gore-Tex jacket, and optionally waterproof trousers

After your walk

  • A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
  • Spare clothes and underwear
  • Toiletry bag and a small towel
  • Swimwear and a towel for wellness facilities (where specified) or swimming
  • A small first-aid kit: personal medication, surgical masks, hand sanitiser, plasters, sterile dressings and a bandage, gauze, disinfectant, arnica granules and aspirin, etc. (Please note that this list is not exhaustive and should be adapted to your own medical needs.)

Find these tips in our article #“What to pack for a hike”.

This list is a guide and should be adapted to your trip and the season in which you are travelling.

—  We were very pleased with the warm welcome we received from the locals, the "gourmet" meals at Le Rozier and Meyrueis, the eco-museum (which was very well organized), and the picturesque region.

Patrick et Brigitte 6/23/26

—  Overall, we're very satisfied. The scenery is magnificent. There were very few people on the trails in the Causse.
