A specialist in organised cycling holidays in France, Grand Angle invites you to discover one of the country’s most beautiful cycling routes: the Canal du Midi from Toulouse to Sète. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 240-kilometre route follows a green corridor lined with centuries-old plane trees, linking the Pink City to the Mediterranean.
On your self-guided cycling journey, you will pass through historic towns such as Carcassonne with its medieval fortress, Béziers with its seven Fonserannes locks, and Agde with its Greek heritage, before reaching Sète and its colourful canals. The route also reveals the ingenuity of Pierre-Paul Riquet through canal bridges, aqueducts and engineering structures along this ride, which is accessible to all cyclists.
From the villages of the Lauragais and the vineyards of the Minervois to Mediterranean lagoons, this journey offers a complete immersion in Occitan heritage, at the leisurely pace of cycling and the canal locks. The charming accommodation we have selected provides a delightful stop at each stage of this journey through the heart of southern France.

Itinerary

Program
If you have chosen bike hire, collect your bikes, which will be delivered to the hotel in the morning. Join the cycle path in the heart of Toulouse. This well-maintained path is paved, and the towpath is wide enough to pass other cyclists. As far as the Naurouze watershed, you will ride through the Lauragais countryside, a passageway since ancient times. You are now at the canal’s highest point, 189m!, on the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Arrive in Castelnaudary, the capital of cassoulet and an important centre of Catharism.
The canal locks now take you downhill rather than uphill. You will cycle through beautiful and varied landscapes between Castelnaudary and Carcassonne. Locks and bridges follow one another, along with engineering structures such as the Treboul, Mezeran, Rebenty and Espitalt aqueducts. You will also pass the village of Ste Eulalie (700m from the canal, with its Romanesque bell tower), the fortified village of Pennautier with its 17th-century château, and finally the splendid city of Carcassonne, a medieval jewel well worth taking time to explore.
The terrain is flat, but the track is sometimes in poor condition. A hybrid bike easily handles these few challenges as you follow the canal’s many bends past the Romanesque bridge at Trèbes, the village of Puicheric surrounded by ramparts, Marseillette and finally the port of Homps, which was long one of the canal’s most important ports. An overnight stay in La Redorte (6km before Homps) is possible if no accommodation is available in Homps.
The canal runs close to the River Aude, passing through Argens-en-Minervois with its castle’s massive towers and the canal’s busiest lock for boats, the gateway to the Canal des 2 Mers. Along the way are the Répudre aqueduct, Le Sommail, one of the canal’s most pleasant stops, and the bridge at Argeliers, a medieval village with ramparts, a castle and a fortified church. You then arrive in Capestang, dominated by the Gothic collegiate church of St Étienne.
Your trip ends after breakfast.
We may sometimes need to change the itinerary shown, either for operational reasons (accommodation capacity issues, changes in terrain conditions, landslides, damaged trails, etc.) or because of the weather. These changes are always made in your interests, for your safety and greater comfort!
Most of the route is free of motor traffic, following paved cycle paths (approximately 1/3) and unpaved towpaths (approximately 2/3), which are not always in good condition. There are no dedicated waymarks; simply follow the canal and the route guide. Distances are marked at each lock. The condition of the tracks can present some difficulties, particularly after rain, so bikes with narrow tyres should be avoided. Hybrid bikes and mountain bikes are ideal.

Hotel ratings
In France, increasing numbers of hotels and guesthouses are choosing not to have an official rating, including establishments that were still rated just one or two years ago. This does not mean their quality has declined—far from it. Many of the guesthouses are charming places to stay.
If we indicate, for example, a comfort level of “3* or equivalent”, this means that the establishment may not have an official rating, but offers a level of comfort comparable to a 3* hotel.

A number of our trips offer opportunities to swim, during a day’s journey or at the end of the day. It would be a shame to miss out. However, we emphasise that you alone must decide whether it is appropriate to swim; you therefore swim under your own responsibility and at your own risk.

For cycling
- Short or long cycling shorts, depending on the season
- Cycling gloves
- A helmet (optional but strongly recommended)
- Sunglasses (for protection against the sun, wind and midges)
- A windproof jacket
- T-shirts or cycling jerseys
- A handlebar map holder
- A water bottle
Note: synthetic technical clothing performs very well. New merino wool clothing is also available; it performs very well, is comfortable to wear and has the advantage of not developing sweat odours (brands include Icebreaker, Ruka, etc.)!
As a general rule, avoid cotton, which makes you cold when wet.
For sun and rain protection
- Sunscreen and sunglasses
- A hat, cap or bucket hat (helmet)
- A windproof jacket
- A rain poncho or a Gore-Tex jacket
After cycling
- A jumper or fleece
- Comfortable trousers for walking
- A pair of shorts
- A tracksuit or a change of clothes
- A lightweight, long-sleeved cotton shirt
- A pair of running-style trainers for the evening
- Spare clothes and underwear
- A toiletry bag
- A small first-aid kit: your personal medication, adhesive bandages, medicated gauze or “2nd skin” dressings, gauze, antiseptic, arnica pellets and aspirin for minor aches and injuries…
- If your bike does not have a pannier, bring a comfortable small 40-litre backpack with a waist belt to carry your personal belongings and picnic during the day. If you have a luggage rack, you can secure your bag to it with bungee cords. Rental bikes come with a pannier for your belongings. Bring a small backpack as well; this makes it easy to carry your belongings when you stop to visit places along the way.
- One item of cabin luggage: a backpack or travel bag in good condition.

— The trip was very well organized from start to finish
Gérard 12/27/25
— We particularly appreciated the peaceful atmosphere around the locks. In September, ridership is measured, but sufficient to create a pleasant link between river tourists and cyclists. The circuit is particularly safe, with very few sequences shared with cars. Work is underway to improve the treads on the cycle paths, which can be very rough at times.
