Hiking in the Black Forest with Grand Angle

Why choose the Black Forest for your next trek?

The highest and largest mountain range in Germany, the Black Forest is a destination of choice for hiking enthusiasts. Its network of marked trails, among the densest in Europe, offers a variety of itineraries for all levels. You will discover changing landscapes, alternating between fir and spruce forests, open high plateaus, glacial lakes such as Titisee and panoramic peaks such as Feldberg. It is an immersion in generous nature and a welcoming mountain culture, just a few steps away from France. To learn more about walking possibilities in the country, consult our guide on mountains in Germany.

Our travel formulas: self-guided or in a group?

At Grand Angle, we know that every traveller has their own definition of adventure. That is why we offer you two ways to explore the Black Forest:

  • The self-guided hiking stays : For those who like to walk at their own pace. We handle all the logistics: booking accommodation, transporting your luggage from one stage to the next and providing a detailed itinerary booklet. You enjoy your days with complete independence and peace of mind.
  • Group travels: For those who appreciate sharing and meeting people. Accompanied by a local French-speaking guide, you benefit from their expertise of the terrain, wildlife and flora. They enrich your experience and ensure the cohesion of a small group of passionate hikers.

How to choose your next hike in the Black Forest?

Our stays are designed to meet different desires for discovery.

  • Star-shaped hiking: Ideal for a first approach, this formula allows you to stay in a single comfortable accommodation. Each day you set out on a new loop and return in the evening, without having to pack and unpack your bags.
  • Multi-day hiking: For walkers who like to feel the progression, crossing or touring a mountain range is a gratifying experience. You change accommodation each evening, which allows you to discover greater landscape diversity.

To make your choice, consult the detailed fact sheets for each trip to evaluate the difficulty level, elevation gain and daily distance. Although this selection focuses on walking, know that the region also lends itself beautifully to cycling: discover our cycling trips in the Black Forest for another form of discovery. When to go to the Black Forest?

The Black Forest offers a different face at each season, but the ideal period for hiking extends from May to October.

  • In spring, from May onwards, meadows are covered in flowers and forests display a brilliant green.
  • In summer, the coolness of high-altitude forests offers a pleasant refuge during hot days. During heat waves, the Black Forest is an excellent alternative to enjoy a more temperate climate.
  • In autumn, especially in September and October, the mountain range adorns itself with flamboyant colours, offering exceptional light for hiking and photography.
  • In winter, the landscape transforms and becomes the ideal playground for stays with snowshoes.

A family stay in the Black Forest?

With its well-maintained trails, often moderate elevation gains and numerous legends, the Black Forest is an excellent destination to introduce young people to hiking. Lakes allow for refreshing breaks and discovering traditional farms or cuckoo clocks can structure walking days. Even if the trips on this page are not specifically labelled “family”, know that we design bespoke family nature holidays and offer a selection of family hiking stays adapted for children. Do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your project.
