Walking on islands, following coastal trails

Walking on islands gives a journey a distinctive rhythm, between inland hills and coastal trails. The path follows a cliff, descends towards a harbour, crosses a village and then opens out to the sea again. On an island, the terrain, wind and ferry connections are as much a part of the itinerary as the stated distance.

Here we bring together our walking and cycling holidays on islands and along coastlines. You can choose a self-guided holiday if you enjoy planning your own day. Guided departures include a guide who can assess the terrain and adapt the programme with the group.

Choosing an island walk or coastal trail

The first consideration is the terrain. A coastal path can stay at a low elevation yet still be demanding because of steps, rocks or repeated climbs. On volcanic islands, elevation gain can build up quickly. We therefore look at the walking time, type of trail and elevation gain for each stage.

The second consideration is how you want to travel. A point-to-point holiday takes you between different places to stay and gives you a sense of progressing along the coast. A single-centre holiday offers more flexibility: you can adapt the day’s outing to the weather and return to your belongings each evening. Our self-guided holidays and guided holidays clearly specify the format.

Four coastal settings to compare

In Madeira, the paths combine volcanic terrain, levadas and ocean views. When considering each stage, elevation gain matters more than distance alone. In the Cinque Terre, trails connect villages nestled between the slopes and the sea, with access that can change depending on ground conditions.

The Ionian Islands put a different emphasis on connections between islands and village life. In Brittany, the GR34 follows a deeply indented coastline. The climbs are often short, but their repetition can take its toll by the end of the day.

For a change of pace, some holidays can be enjoyed by bike or as a bike and boat holiday. The boat then serves as mobile accommodation, taking you to a new island between cycling stages.

Preparing for a walk by the sea

By the sea, we prepare above all for wind and sun. A lightweight jacket remains useful, along with sun protection. Carry some extra water too, even when the stage seems short. Shoes with a stable sole are better suited to rocky sections than a pair chosen solely for their light weight.

Before setting off, check boat timetables and any trail closures. Once there, allow some extra time for a swim or a visit. This will also be useful if the weather changes. When travelling as a family, start by considering the youngest walker’s ability and browse our family holidays to find suitable stages.

For further reading, our account of the Aeolian Islands shows how volcanic activity and the sea shape a single journey.

—  Very interesting itineraries that often take you along less-traveled trails. Transportation and hotels were impeccable. A few inconsistencies between the app and the roadbook. The map showing how to get to Portela from Porto da Cruz is missing. Overall, we’re thrilled with this trip!

Thank you very much for your feedback! We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you also for your comments on the roadbook and the app—we'll look into them to improve our materials. We look forward to accompanying you on your next trip!

—  These are some really beautiful hikes, but June 10–19 is a little too late in the season because of the heat. For most of the hikes, it’s impossible to set out early due to bus schedules and breakfast times at the hotels.

—  A magnificent hike, very varied. The on-site agent (Javi) was very competent and friendly, and taught us a lot about Menorca, its history, its wildlife, its flora and its birds, and orchestrated our stay perfectly. A hike best done in spring or autumn.
